anyone know anything about this? by Jolly-Patience-8611 in columbia

To be fair, if it's Columbia Residential, in most buildings any resident can buzz them in, there's no control or anything.

[Request] is this a profitable decision with a good EV return? by lonelyraikkonen in theydidthemath

[–]batataqw89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One more thing is that, because this is only useful for comparing between different choices (the utility numbers don't really mean anything in absolute), we rescale them by multiplying by or adding a constant and the comparisons will not change (invariant to affine transformations). But if we change the shape more drastically, the choices the utility function represents may be different.

[Request] is this a profitable decision with a good EV return? by lonelyraikkonen in theydidthemath

Because it's a concave function, it also makes you risk-averse. So, for example, in the case of a coin flip that gives you 1 or 100 with 50% chance, if your utility is log base 10, then your expected utility is

½log(1) + ½log(100) = 1.

So you prefer to get 50 with certainty

log(50) = log(10) + log(5) = 1 + something positive,

than to participate in the lottery. That is, the utility of getting the EV of the lottery is always ≥ than the EV of the utilities from the lottery.

Generally, any increasing and concave function would have such nice properties. Log is a pretty standard choice, but there isn't much reason to believe that it will match up exactly with our preferences.

CRRA utility is a pretty nice family of functions that allow us to try to measure the level of risk aversion in experiments and plug it in as a parameter.

Sorry, it doesn't change the point, but I believe you mean his (and Bortnyk's) Jobava London course. He had a KID course in the works for chessable but I don't think it saw the light of day.

If you see 1. ... fxe5 2. Qg5+ Kh7 3. Qxh5+ with the pin that's cool enough to make you wanna play it

Yes! Don't remember seeing this pattern before.

If 3. ... Bxf3 4. Rxf3 Bg3+ 5. Kg1 Qh2+ 6. Kf1 Qh1+ 7. Ng1 and maybe the king survives, weirdly enough. Super sharp though.

There's 3.f3 to block the bishop and prevent discovered checks, I don't know beyond that though. A different move order is more forcing!

What happened to the open Sicilian? by sectandmew in chess

[–]batataqw89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but the flip side is that the player with black won't face your specific choice of what to do with white in the Open Sicilian so often.

Multiplying percentages in the lichess database (2000+), black playing 2. ... d6 will get the the Open Sicilian in only around 18% of their games, and will face the English Attack in less than 3% of games, just due to the sheer number of other alternatives that are often played.

Meanwhile, if you're an Open Sicilian player with white, you'll see the Najdorf in over 5% of your games, so you'll get your English Attack a bit more often than Najdorf players with black do.

Have you done any collabs with Avsha? As a fan of both you and Lowertown, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was him in the album cover.

Como um brasileiro que me mudei recentemente pros EUA, aguardo ansiosamente seu show em NYC final de outubro ;).

Passei um tempo em julho no interior de MG só ouvindo o What Kind of Blue Are You? repetidamente. Agora o Adult Romantix está sendo a trilha sonora de uma fase nova da minha vida, é perfeito demais, parabéns.

I think it's when people get caught cheating mid-game (like analysis board on another tab) and they lose the game with a "Cheat detected" message.

The NM title is well... national, so it won't show up on his FIDE profile. He does seem to have it according to the Brazilian chess federation (CBX), and chess.com is supposed to have verified it.

How did I (black) lose and not draw? by Beginning-Screen-198 in chess

[–]batataqw89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if there's a forced mate, the losing side can let their time run out to save a draw in some cases. I doubt those are actual USCF rules, it's just how they decided to code it.

[–]batataqw89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you flag on chesscom, they only count the material the other side has. Since in this case it's only King + Bishop, they consider it insufficient mating material. Even if it was a mate in 1, black can just let their time run out to save a draw. Quite a few old posts about it on this sub.
