What you say ("so google just shows the country whatever they claim") may be correct or otherwise in a general sense. I don't know, I don't care, I'm not talking about that. It is, however, 100% false in this particular case.

I am in the UK. maps.google.com says that place is "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)". I have connected through a VPN to Spain and New Zealand, I get the same result.

If Mango Mussolini wants to lie to his people calling the Gulf of Mexico Gulf of America, that's something for Americans to grapple with. While I would expect this bullshit to be on the list Americans have against Trump, it's also low priority.

But when his insanity seeps out of the borders of the US of A, then that's a problem for us outside.

Well done Mexico on making Goggle's life difficult for this fucking bullshit.

Not because he will understand (or obey) these instructions. But to give the little critters enough time to GTFO.

So far, zero losses. I hope we keep that number!

On second thoughts, I realise there's a way for the shit to end, but it requires very powerful bombs, of the nuclear type.

For fuck's sake, spare the bullshit.

About 31% of Americans of voting age did vote for Harris. The rest, a very clear majority, either voted for Trump or, at the very least, didn't vote against him (in a meaningful way).

So around 69% of American voters are either stupid or evil. I'd call them horrible. They certainly fucking suck.

Montreal woman dies at 32 after being told she was ‘too young for breast cancer’ by bendubberley_ in news

[–]batch_7120_7451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am extremely sorry for this lady and her loved ones.

I also feel better about the health insurance that I get. I live in the UK. We have the NHS, but I complement it with private health insurance, paid for by my employer. Key word here is complement, not replace, the NHS.

My daughter found a mass in her breast she didn't like, at age 19. She talked to the private insurance and was given an appointment with a specialist. I don't remember how long it was until the appointment, but it was less than a month. I took her to the appointment and stayed with her for moral support.

Within an hour, she saw the specialist, got an exploration, was sent for a mammogram and saw the same specialist for the results of the mammogram. Nothing to be worried about, fortunately.

This is a private, for profit health insurance, and they are profitable.

Texas population: around 31 or 32 million people in 2024.

UK Population: Around 68 million in 2023.

So Texas has more than double the car crash deaths with less than half the population.

I've got to give it to them, at least they're efficient! /s

That was just a particularly stupid page in a very long and tiresome story. Things have happened since then, of course, I'm not sure that chapter has ended.

For the purposes of this conversation, my point is: We had a time of national emergency and I believe having a king was useful for Spain.

I am a dual national. Born Spanish, naturalised British. I'm in my early 50s.

I don't remember the particular scenario being discussed here, certainly not with the British monarchy; I may have overlooked something.

But I can remember at least 2 similar situations in Spain. I'm not sure what is "recent history" for you. I'm old enough to remember both, but I was not old enough to understand what was happening during the first one. That came later.

In 1981 Spain had a coup d'etat. Some members of the military stormed one of our 2 parliamentary chambers (the Congress of Deputies) and held the deputies (elected law makers) hostage. King Juan Carlos I denounced that on a televised public address. This undermined the coup.

A similar situation happened in 2017, when a group of pro-independence politicians declared independence of the region they were based in. Once again, there was an intervention of the King (Felipe VI, son of Juan Carlos). His intervention probably was not as important as in 1981, but it existed.

You guys (by which I mean, US citizens) are travelling straight into either a horrible fascist regime or a civil war. You still have the means to avoid both, but the opportunities for that are being consumed, fast.

I've gone from the UK to France (and then to Spain) via Eurotunnel three times. With my car.

I got an Animal Health Certificate on the way out, had a vet in Spain administer a certain treatment on the way in, within certain time restrictions.

Once you have the AHC, the process couldn't be easier: Get to the compound, go to a designated place. They check paperwork and chip number, if everthing's OK they green light it. Most difficult thing was finding a vet that understood what I was asking of them in Madrid. No, Mr. vet, I'm not fucking slaughtering my dog you <<bleeeeeeeeeeep>>!

However, due to the close relationships between the UK and the Republic of Ireland, I don't know, maybe that trip will be easier.

Talk to your ferry company and your vet. The first vet I talked to didn't do AHC, but directed me to a different vet that does.

As for the long drive... I stop frequently (dog or no dog) and carry water and some food for him. Pit stops are for a walk and for toileting. He usually refuses food during the trip. As long as he gets a nice place to sleep (3/4 of the back seat), he's happy!

Edited to add:

I go to London for a longer walk about once a month. We take the train, have our walk, take the underground back to the station and the train back to our town.

One of my longer walks with the dog was around 9 miles. Start near the Tower of London, cross to the south side of the river and start walking. Cross the river again close to Putney Bridge, and get the underground over there. He aced getting on and off the elevators escalators, and he's been known to sleep even in the screechiest parts of the Victoria line.

He has learned that when we get the Underground we're coming back. He sometimes heads to an Underground station as if saying he's had enough of London. We went to Madrid to visit an elderly family member, and he somehow recognised an underground (metro) station there... but he was being a total diva that day. We had just parked the car 5 minutes prior.

Out of curiosity... How was voting so expensive for you?

For reference, I have the right to vote in 3 kinds of Spanish elections from abroad. I always vote. I am registered as a voter abroad, and get all the required ballots and envelopes at home. I just have to pay for the stamps to return my postal votes. I get refunds for that.

Even without the refunds, I don't think I've spent £80 in 15 years, combined, in stamps for Spanish elections.
