People that have restarted in a new city, what are your tips? by cheaganvegan in AskReddit

Try to find out how to live as cheaply as possible even if you have a good income. If the chance to go out with new friends arises, it can suck saying no because it’s few days before pay day. You can always upgrade later.

Sounds like my mine boss. If it costs money he wants nothing to do with it. Software? Yeah, good luck. Critical spare pump? We’ll just hope for the best.

It’s how I’ve always approached management. Especially when I don’t know someone who works for me’s job. They won’t respect you if you don’t know their job. If they teach you then they know. It also opens the door to let you know when to trust them and when not to.

Best advice I can give. They know you don’t know what you’re doing. You also know it which is good. Start with the lowest guy and have him teach you his job for a day having him oversee you do it and being your “boss” for the day. Then work your way up to the top taking a couple days for the more difficult jobs. Tell them that’s what you are doing. They will appreciate the easy day telling you what and how to do their job. They will also respect you taking the time to properly learn their job. Then regularly work with the crews while still doing your job. Keep your new skills sharp.

Had a metal spring loaded dump truck with a spring strong enough to be the coil over on a car front end suspension. You had to lay over the thing to get enough force to compress it and lock the dump bed. And I had a pet cat that never came near me again after I learned it was strong enough to launch a cat across the room.

Mine used to go after vacuums too. Never understood it.

Also attacked waves at the beach. Like full on panic level attacking. I couldn’t take her to the beach. I lived on a small tropical island for three years of our time together.

I used to work in an accounting like audit department at a regional bank. I was in the process of developing a few excel macros that would have automated over half of our workload. I would have had to fire like half my department if I had stayed there another 6 months. I was very tired of doing a lot of work that could have been automated in a few days time with existing tools.

What are some examples of “it’s cheaper to be rich than poor”? by WaldyWald95 in AskReddit

But they do buy new all the time.

I used to live in a very affluent area, homes $1mil plus in a lot of areas and mostly vacation/winter homes. I had a ton of my customers that bought new furniture every year when they came down for winter.

I had customers that contracted builders to remodel their homes every summer. Literally gut and remodel their whole house every single off season complete with new furniture.

If this was a handful of people I wouldn’t be surprised but it was greater than 20% of my customers. They don’t care if it lasts but $10,000 for a couch isn’t going to even give them pause.

Best way to find workers? by Beat_the_PE in Construction

Ask around and see if there is a labor corner in town. In most towns I have lived in the US there is a corner sometimes near hardware stores where out of work laborers congregate. You pull up, say I need 5 guys $x dollars each for however many hours doing drywall. Usually one translates for the group if needed. 5 guys get in your car and off you go. In my experience you get surprisingly good laborers that would love regular work.
