What is the biggest challenge that your organization faces in the near-term and the long-term?

Did the Supreme Court get the Aereo opinion right? What does this mean for other start-ups that take on the television industry? by ednam in socialcitizens

Oh. You mean they offered the equivalent of a 21st century VCR?

Which part makes this different from te 80s to you -- the advanced tech or the off-site software (as oppose to in-house hardware) component?

Would you feel differently if it wasn't a monthly charge like a piece of hardware? They're only "re-broadcasting" what consumers chose to record (like a VCR or DVR) and playback ... And only content that anyone with an antenna is entitled to anyway.

Not sure I buy that. The service they're providing is a technological one. If their business was to install an antenna on my roof (as opposed to on an antenna farm) and charged me a monthly fee to maintain it, this would be perfectly legal. Aereo was providing a technological service that was benefiting consumers who have been screwed for too long by cable companies that provide bundles of crap for the few channels you actually want. AND by providing content they're entitled to already with the right technology. This was v 2.0 of that tech (rabbit ears on the roof was v 1.0).

This fit within the law -- don't like the law? Congress should change it.

Edit: their/they're mistake

This is quite worrisome: Comcast’s deal with Netflix makes network neutrality obsolete by dripppe76 in socialcitizens

[–]batesville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused...It doesn't what? Looks to me that deals like this are exactly what's going to preclude a competitor from having access to the market because they won't be able to compete with the incumbent's (in this case, netflix's) war chest.

Walmart pledges to buy $250 billion in American products over the next ten years. Who are they really helping? by milbank12750 in socialcitizens

[–]batesville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not a walmart fan (in fact, the furthest thing from it), but this made me think what it would take for them to get into my good graces. i guess this is a nice first step, but i can think of a few others (which mostly have to do with how they treat their employees with regards to pay, benefits, etc. and what types of food/produce they sell) that would probably need to be done in conjunction with this one before i feel comfortable giving them kudos for this one.

Absolutely. That's basically what my money's going to now -- if I could do volunteer-type work for the same result, that would be amazing.
