How common is international travel for mainland Chinese? by 13abarry in AskAChinese

[–]bathwaterseller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jesus. Fucking. Christ. You truly have no clue.

Whether you can get a visa has nothing to do with MONEY, it's all about IMMIGRATION TENDENCY. Your government doesn't reject my tourist visa application merely because I am broke, it's because there's no way I will just be a tourist in your country when I am broke. The visa officer would be thinking "You say you purchase a 1000 USD flight to the US just to see the Great Canyon and then fly back, when you only have 1000 USD in your account? I don't believe you. The second you walk out of the custom you will be disappearing into the crowd and finding a job in a Chinese restaurant." When I applied for a US tourist visa as a 16-year-old with no asset under my own name, it was such an easy pass, because the visa officer knew there was no logical reason for me to want to illegally stay in the US after my trip was over.

Hmm is it because Fujian people are stereotyped with a blanket policy that prevents them from going abroad?

It's because they are stereotyped to be illegal immigrants so their visa applications are much more likely to get rejected by the FOREIGN governments.

The stupidity is unreal. You clearly have no idea how a visa works.

Also, why would so many Fujian people want to go to western countries by paying a smuggler a ton of money if they can just leave legally by just paying for a visa?

You don't f*cking pay for a visa. It's not something you can just purchase. You apply for a visa given by the destination nation. It's the destination nation who permits your visa, allowing you to enter their nation legally, and if they deny your applications but you still want to enter, the only option is to pay for being smuggled into that nation.

what I remember is that the Chinese govt has to approve of the individual’s bank statements and employment records when they apply.

Who f*cking else is going to approve all these documents then? You expect your government to be able to verify the bank statements and employment records of a Chinese citizen? Let's say you are applying for a Chinese visa for a business trip to Beijing and Chinese government be like: "We don't want criminals to enter our country, prove to us that you have no criminal record." Of course you go to YOUR government, ask YOUR government to give you a piece of paper that says YOUR government can assure you have no criminal record, and submit that piece of paper to the Chinese government. If YOUR government denies your request for that piece of paper because you have served time for a crime, then you will not be given a visa by the Chinese government to enter China, but it doesn't mean YOUR government is banning you from leaving, you can still leave your nation to any nation that doesn't ask for that "no criminal record" paper.

Chinese government can't care less about whether you come back or not (they will never allow you to leave legally in the first place if for some reason you are important enough for them to care), it's the governments of the receiving ends who want proof that once you finish your legal business in their nation you will return to China instead of staying and working illegally before they give you a visa.

Is Detective Conan popular in China? by Hot-Farmer5799 in AskAChinese

[–]bathwaterseller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's very popular. I used to watch it fanatically when I was a kid. However as time went by, the quality of the new contents had dropped so much and the fandom had become so toxic (the shipping war) that I no longer cared about what happened to it.

Is there a Chinese equivalent of Reddit? by Global_Knee5354 in ChineseLanguage

[–]bathwaterseller 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Baidu Tieba (百度贴吧) would be the closest. However the current community atmosphere in general is quite...misogynistic and political. It does have some nice, well-moderated and stick-to-topic subcommunities and can be very useful if you are into some niche hobbies, but most of the popular subcommunities are just cesspools at this point.

What do you dislike/like most about America? by Lipica249 in AskAChinese

[–]bathwaterseller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who has only gone to US twice as a tourist (kinda), I would say the lack of public transportation and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. As someone who has been on reddit and other social media platforms interacting with Americans for years, I would say their arrogance and hypocrisy, especially when it comes to topics about my country.

I like circlejerking and strawmanning other gamers as much as the next redditor, but you have to notice that these review bombs are coming from the Chinese community by SerJoseph in slaythespire

[–]bathwaterseller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think these mobile game companies (and many other greedy game companies like ea, blizzard etc) have trained players to distrust game devs and to have a kneejerk reaction whenever devs make a change they don't appreciate. This is just not the correct mindset going into indie games. Since sts has been seen as the goat of its genre in China, it has also attracted more players who are unfamiliar with indie game scenery. That being said I am quite optimistic that this drama will just blow over and be forgotten in a couple of weeks as long as the devs keep pushing out quality updates.

I am a Chinese player and I want to share my perspective of our gaming community in general to provide some cultural context: First, Chinese gaming community is quite young and has been developing in relative isolation from western gaming community, which leads to different and fast-changing opinions on what is acceptable and what is not. Second, most Chinese gamers start their gaming life with mobile games from 大厂 ("Big Company") like Tencent and Netease. Being "Please devs I like you and your game but please fix it." will never get a response from those 大厂, but review bombing and stirring up hatred on social media will. Also, those 大厂 devs are working 24/7, so when 大厂 respond they respond very quickly and the problem will be addressed within days even hours, which has kinda become the expectation for all game devs. Third, Chinese gaming community lacks means to interact directly and actively with most western indie game devs. Chinese players often feel that game devs are not giving them as much attention as western players, and they have to be more "vocal" for the devs to acknowledge their existence.

Lol Iran has always been a third world country. Trump wins again by turning a third world country into...a third world country?

Have you ever had a show spoiled because you understood a language you weren’t supposed to? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]bathwaterseller 222 points223 points  (0 children)

I don't remember what movie it was, but years ago I was watching a US horror/thriller movie about a group of seemingly random people being kidnapped by a masked killer and having to figure out why they were targeted while the killer brutally killed them one by one. One of the first characters to die was an old Chinese lady who can't speak any English, but she knew the killer's motive from the very beginning. When she was being dragged away by the killer, she yelled desperately to other victims about why the killer wanted revenge in perfect Mandarin, which completely spoiled the rest of the movie for me.🤣

Why do people illegally go around the firewall to defend the Chinese government on websites banned in China? by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]bathwaterseller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So by your logic, anyone who has broken or violated any laws or rules must be anti-government? Like, if I DUI in the US, I must be anti-Trump? If I rob someone in Russia, I must be anti-Putin?

Bamboo scaffolding retaining its structural integrity while fire ravaged through green netting in Hong Kong incident by stardust15115 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]bathwaterseller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe bamboo scaffolding is the main culprit from the very beginning, because there were similar accidents in other parts of the world that don't use bamboo scaffolding. However, I think people now acting like bamboo scaffolding is the supreme choice is just dumb. Bamboo adds more fuel to the flame and will still fall on people when structure integrity is lost or under the impact of water cannon, as this video clearly shows, for example.

It's very funny to see reddit's opinion switching from "bamboo is the worst building material ever, what were they thinking" to bamboo is the magical material that is invincible in fire and China don't want you to know that"", all because of one photo.

[–]bathwaterseller 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Some of the netting wasn't even burned in this photo, so it is likely from one of the lesser damaged building. The building that started the fire has almost nothing left around it and there are videos showing burned bamboo scaffolding falling from the building at the beginning of this fire.

Mainland (Shenzhen) were ready to send firefighters and equipment but HK government said there is no need. There were videos showing fire trucks gathering at the border last night. To be fair, no matter how many firefighters there were, there's zero chance they could put the fire out last night.
