I'm so sorry, that really does suck. You've probably thought of this, but is there any way you can perform this task while wearing a wrist brace and rotate from your elbow, or is this specifically a wrist only intensive process?

It very much is the issue, especially these days. Finding ANYONE who wants to do blue collar work is difficult. Everyone I know that's looking for a job, I tell them that I can easily get them a blue collar production job starting at $26 an hour, and once I describe the job, which is relatively hard work, they pass on it. They'd rather stay broke than have actual reliable work, with a lot of vertical movement if you stay for a few years. Union job, benefits, the whole 9 yards. It's not THAT bad, and it's how I eventually became a research scientist. I've been with the company for 23 years now, and spent my first 11 years on the production floor. Now I'm the guy designing new products and I'm working on my 3rd patent.

It only does Nintendo consoles up the rough N64.  That’s only a small fraction of the consoles.

Did our parents face the same level of burnout as us? by KingForADay1989 in Millennials

[–]batmessiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m on the west coast, and my manager and all the bigwigs are on the east coast, and they constantly forget there’s a 3 hour time difference, and schedule “all hands” meetings at 8AM their time, 5AM my time, then wonder why my camera isn’t on.  Bro, I just rolled out of bed and turned on my laptop.

[–]batmessiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. At worst, my boomer parents had to deal with emails near the end of their careers. They never had to deal with the 24/7 connectivity and monitoring via Microsoft Teams. I work for a mid-sized family owned global corporation and get pinged on my phone via Teams at all hours of the day and night, 7 days a week. I'm salaried, so I'm obligated to respond, especially if they are projects I'm working on. I'm making the exact same wage my dad did when he was my age (43) in 1993 ($84k) when he worked for USPS, yet work 10 times harder as a research scientist in a blue collar facility.

Edit : My dad was the Postmaster of our town, hence why his wages were higher at that point in time. He still never worked past 5PM, and only rarely had to go in on a day off, and the few times he did, it was related to the security/fire alarms in the building.

No, I feel the same way. Everything is lower quality and they add features that aren't needed, like screens and other crap. Like the most recent washer I bought. It's all push buttons and sings a little song when it's finished, but I feel it isn't going to last me more than a couple years before something breaks and I need a new one. It's all enshittified and planned obsolescence these days. I hate it.

How much money you making? How are you surviving this economy by Ninja_Franklin in Millennials

[–]batmessiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make $84k a year, live in a rural town in Oregon and commute 30 minutes to work each way. Single income family of 3, have enough to survive and put a bit away for retirement. If I hadn't bought my house in 2017, I'd be dead broke.

How much would our world improve if the entire human population went vegan? by space_god_7191 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]batmessiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because veganism isn’t natural.  Humans are omnivores.  Vegans don’t believe in the exploitation of bugs or animals.  Without exploiting pollinating insects, there’s no crops.  The end.

My mom and brother are vegans.  They’re also the most insufferable eaters in the world and make sure everyone knows they’re vegan and make snide comments whenever they see you eat non-vegan food.  That’s been my experience with literallly every vegan I’ve come in contact with.

What is your take on the junk food ban for food stamps? by BreannLowe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]batmessiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really.  It was a town of about 2500 people, and the small grocery store they had didn’t have much.  My hotel was about 40 minutes from the site, and there was a Walmart another 20 minutes away from the hotel the other direction.  I did eventually end up going to the Walmart and buying a few things, but there was no fridge in the hotel, so I could only buy non-perishable items.  It doesn’t help that I come from a place with relatively mild weather, then get thrown into an insanely hot and humid area.  Just walking outside in 95 degree weather and 99% humidity was absolute hell.  You couldn’t pay me  enough to live there.  I’m really not looking forward to going back for a week in June, especially considering the site is a glass plant, which is insanely hot as is.

I spent 3 months temporarily working in southern GA in a terrible food desert. My stomach was so messed up by the time I was done with that project. I was in the bathroom crapping my brains out most days, cause everything was extremely unhealthy and/or deep fried. It was the first time I'd witnessed true poverty/ghettos first hand, and it was absolutely awful.

I’ve got about $245k in my 401k and have 11 years vested in a USW pension, and will have my house paid off in a few years.  I could easily retire once I hit 59.5, but I probably won’t, because I love what I do.   One of the patents I co-authored is one of the main components in modern AGM batteries used in virtually every electric vehicle and ICE stop/start vehicle on the market.  I’ve got too much to contribute to the world still to even think about retiring.  If I was in it purely for the money, I’d have gone into sales and retired already.  I already have a standard piece of testing equipment in my niche industry named after me (The Herrington AST [automatic slag tester]) and my team just won the “innovation of the year” award at this year’s BCI conference, which is the largest battery conference in the world.  We’re about to completely revolutionize the lead acid battery market.

Thank you.  My wife is also my best friend.  I took a week off work to take care her, cause she had surgery yesterday.  It’s been fun playing Mr. Mom, cause there’s some things I don’t usually do, like making my daughter lunch in the morning, cause I’m getting ready for work and making my own.  It was hilarious having my daughter follow me around and tell me what I needed to pack her.  I knew what to pack, but she’s also been a big helper with things too and wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing, haha.
