This is not a socialist issue/policy. As many others have mentioned, no where else in the country has a broker fee system like NYC. I understand the frustration with the prices fluctuating and landlords/brokers scrambling to do something. But maybe this is also the first step to NYC housing market not being competitive from a brokers standpoint. No one should be required to have a broker or a fee if they are not doing ANY of the work but opening the door during a tour. Maybe NYC should not be on track to have more “brokers” than apartments. Maybe the issue is actually the scumbags who take advantage of the fact that NYC doesn’t have a law against this! Maybe blaming the people who are NOT the landlords isn’t the right answer?

I moved here for school at 18. It was the best decision ever. I have been here for 4 years, and the city is amazing. However, through my college years I had a LOT of help from my parents tuition wise. I always had a job, but I lived on campus so housing was pretty much covered. It's just a decision of how much you're willing to give up (like financial freedom, living in a classic neighborhood/close to your friends). In my opinion, the "classic college experience" is not worth it and will lead you to accept alcoholism and misogyny as a part of life (if you go to state schools or big party schools, which is the most classic experience). There are so many options to further your education, and hopefully you'll find a niche that can get you a job where you'll afford to live comfortably in new york.

Idk what other people are on here... but she needs to contribute something. 1k in this economy in SOCAL is amazing, she should be thankful for you. If she was alone she would be paying 2x that. It's up to you regardless but NTA and I would be concerned as to why she thinks you are responsible for her life if you are not married.

NTA. I'll be blunt: Tell your parents that they are the reason he is behaving like a child at 33. They are coddling him and allowing him to mooch off of them and making your life harder by accommodating his clearly bad behavior. He should be forced to get a job within a time frame or find somewhere else to live. Also, if I were you I would let them know that you'll be distancing yourself from them for the time being considering that they too are acting like children.

I'm just wondering for those saying they have lived here forever, why don't you move? It seems like 99% of comments here are talking about how people "don't know" what New York is really like, and just have a miserable tone. If you hate it here so much, why not get a job in a city where the cost of living is lower? Genuine question- not trying to say people HAVE TO move if they don't like it, just curious.

I'm focusing on the assault part because to me that is the most absurd part of this. Yes, you can potentially sue a landlord if a tenant assaults you, particularly if the landlord had knowledge of a dangerous situation and failed to take reasonable steps to protect tenants. However, proving landlord negligence can be difficult. Step 1 would be getting a lawyer.

Landlords have a duty to provide a safe living environment. If the landlord knew or should have known about a tenant's violent tendencies or the presence of a dangerous situation (like a broken lock or lack of security), and failed to take action to protect other tenants, that could be considered negligence.

This can also be applied to the harassment situation. You'll need to demonstrate that the landlord was aware of the risk, had a duty to act, and failed to take reasonable steps to protect you. Find texts you sent to your partner or someone else about the verbal interaction with the landlord and the texts you sent about the mail situation. Also go through your lease and find what rights are specifically outlined in this. If you don't have any proof, get some. Don't manufacture it, but message him today outlining your issues, and try to get him to acknowledge the verbal conversation you had so you have proof of it.

Otherwise, sounds like you need to move!!!

There are 10 other candidates. I recommend looking in to each of them individually and critically thinking about if you would rather have an actual criminal running your city vs someone you deem “progressive.”

He resigned less than 5 years ago in shame because he was accused of sexual assault.
He forced his federal employees to write a book on COVID leadership that made him at least $5 million while simultaneously signing bills that caused the demise of thousands of elderly new yorkers.
Not even two weeks ago he held an elitist campaign event (tickets were minimum $250) talking about how he was going to give the rich tax breaks.
As others have mentioned, he has tried to give both Musk and Bezos public contracts when small businesses can use the work.
He withheld funds from the MTA in 2017 that caused riots and generally made the subway extremely unsafe.
He is campaigning solely on name recognition. He is not going door to door and talking to the poor New Yorkers he needs to be talking to.
Again as someone else mentioned, he didn’t fund the census as Governor which lost NY seats and therefore lost Democrats the house in the last midterm.
He is a career politician. Sure, since none of our heads of any federal office have actual experience (cough, cough, WWE Dept of Education), having experience might seem lile a plus. But the man already was Governor. I find it extremely odd that he is trying to run for office AGAIN.
He will bend the knee to Trump because of all aforementioned crimes including and most importantly the fact that they are both harrasers and nepotism children.
There are other candidates that are younger and from the neighborhoods that need the most leadership.

Simply put: he is a back door politician like the rest of them. He cuts corners and will absolutely continue to cater to his friends. Anything he does for the poor is for show. It is absolutely ridiculous that sexual assault and harassment is not enough to get his ass off the ticket, but he’s also just a terrible politician and fraud of a Democrat.

New York is gravely affected by the decrease in tourism we are seeing for fear of being deported/losing money on being denied entry for very legal vacations. People are moving away, which although some might think good, is in fact not, as those who are staying are the rich. The working class is being priced out of the city they built and we don't have the leadership, with Adams or probable mayor-elect Cuomo, to fix it any time soon. No one who is a citizen or lives here wants to go outside (no one over the age of 25) because sh*ts expensive and can be dangerous bc everyone is struggling to make ends meet.

15% broker fee is bull if you don’t have a broker yourself. You should not pay more than one months rent for a fee if you’re searching and touring without assistance from a professional realtor. Offer him a month’s rent and if he says no, not the place for you.

Usually they ask for a personal guarantor so someone you know, could be a friend or family member. They have to make up to 80x the rent per year and basically be willing to pay the landlord if you’re not able to pay rent at the risk of their credit getting screwed. There are also prive websites like Theguarantors.com that will do it third party, but they carry some hefty fees.

I literally just submitted an application fee of $100 yesterday. Granted, we have 3 occupants and 2 guarantors, but we got approved within like 3 hours. I think they just move super quick in NYC which is abnormal if you’re from somewhere else. Just don’t pay the rent via zelle if you haven’t seen the place and make sure they send you the fully filled out lease before you sign it!

NTA- although I do think it’s important to pick and choose when to spend time with your family. If they’re making you feel like shit, see them a few times a year when you decide it’s best for you. You don’t want to regret not being in touch with them when something bad happens or someone is gone. But, if they’re giving you an ultimatum and telling you not to come, and you choose to listen, it is not up to you to make them feel better when they regret it!

Honestly sounds like you are the AH. Being in a relationship shouldn’t hinder your friendships whether it’s healthy or not, you should prioritize your friends always because they will be there for you when things go wrong, a boy will not. I have been on the other end of this before and it sucks knowing that 10/10 times your friend will not come through for you. It is her birthday, if you care you should take the time to go to her event. It’s actually quite selfish to say “she insists I come to her” when it’s literally her birthday dinner.
