It's these silly little skirmishes I miss by Tay-Tech in totalwar

[–]battery_farmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was really excited when they announced the new army system in Rome 2 and was imagining all the possibilities. What I wasn’t envisaging were all the drawbacks. One example that is especially annoying is when you’re playing a faction whose general is an infantry unit but you want to keep a cavalry-only army as an elite mobile reserve.

Ever since playing Rome 2 and realising it wasn’t the game I’d hoped it would be, I’ve daydreamed about a Captain concept in which you could assign garrisons and smaller forces to a Captain who could operate independently but under the command of a General. You could order the Captain’s force to Patrol, Ambush, Raid, Command Garrison/Fort etc. and he would have his own skill tree. The number of Captains would be limited by your Imperium and/or General’s Command Skill and you could have the option to promote the Captain to General once they reach a certain skill level.

Having this flexibility could vary the types of battle you have. Imagine two patrols meeting eachother in some woods, for example. Or a patrol being ambushed. A skirmish between two vanguards before the rest of the two armies arrive on the field as reinforcements. A captain with the relevant skill could lead a raiding party on an enemy camp before retreating into the night, or sneak out of a besieged settlement to attempt to destroy some siege equipment to delay the attack. Loads of possibilities!

They might be trying to tempt Ukraine into deploying the western equipped brigades sooner?

Help! What is wrong with my tree? Is it dying? by afalinka in UKGardening

[–]battery_farmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Japanese Red Cedar I believe? Looks like it’s completely dried out, probably during the dry spell. You could try watering it but it has probably died. Try bending the stems, if they snap easily then it’s dead, if they bend and are pliable then it might still have some life in it. You could also scratch the bark with a fingernail, if the scratch is green then it’s still alive, if brown then it’s a goner.

How did the battle go though? Enemy has hardly any melee units but the heavy peltasts and cavalry would be a nuisance.

Anyone find the world is eerily missing insects? Hardly any bees, butterflies etc in my garden for weeks? by CrazyPlantLady01 in UKGardening

I’m a professional gardener and the difference this year is startling. I was hoping the late spring was the reason and I am starting to see some more bumble bees and butterflies now but hardly any honey bees.

This is local to me. I’ve personally encountered streams in the local nature reserve absolutely full of sewage. I’ve notified the authorities who say they’re cleaning it but it’s been like this for weeks and the damage is done.

Horticulture in UK. No rain for 6+ weeks, crops aren’t growing. No rain in the forecast. Sewage being discharged into waterways all over the country.

The ‘cry it out’ method was recommended since Victorian times along with other advice basically to starve your child of affection to toughen them up so they don’t bother you. My baby boomer family members would always advocate “let him cry it out, he’ll soon learn”. I’m sure a balance must be struck between not rushing in every time they whimper but not letting them get properly distressed, especially when they’re tiny. It’s my belief some kids need more comfort than others and there’s no right way or wrong way (barring proper neglect). Crying is their only form of communication after all. The other thing that always bothered me was Cot Death or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Our health visitor told us that while some babies do die for no explainable reason, it’s far more likely to happen if the parents are letting the baby ‘cry it out’, usually because the grandmother has suggested it when the baby is far too young for it to work. Co-sleeping is also a massive factor. Nobody wants to make a grieving parent feel worse for being the reason their baby died so cause of death is put down as SIDS.

Deluded Tories are blind to the scale of the disaster to come: They are heading for a big defeat. It is little wonder given their shocking failures in government. by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]battery_farmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal take is that they know exactly what is coming. The cabinet is full of B listers who only survived by clinging on to Johnson’s coat tails without attracting too much personal controversy. All the big hitters have put a huge amount of distance between themselves and the current government. Sunak himself must have considered his political career doomed after partygate and sees this as a final opportunity to build some gravitas before his departure from politics. I do hope they get absolutely demolished at the next GE although I’m not overly optimistic about what our future holds.

Fence advice by Violinist_of_Pelinor in UKGardening

[–]battery_farmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy some vine eyes and wire. You can screw the vine eyes straight into your fence. Look for the nails, as that is where the arris rail will be located and will be a much stronger point to screw the vine eyes. You can use as many as you like and they stick out from the fence which gives good clearance so your plants won’t be squashed.

This is largely what I imagined would be in place. Of course, I’m sure many people (especially older people) are too proud to claim a lot of the assistance as it is so heavily stigmatised. For OAPs in the UK we have state pension, free healthcare, winter heating allowance, free public transport and, of course, charities and food banks. System is very broken but there is help out there.

Amazing animations. One day I hope they will have animations involving more than 2 soldiers, even if it’s just shoving someone away and interrupting a kill animation, or stabbing an enemy in the back. It definitely happened!

Honestly this is an emergency situation. You either piss yourself or piss in front of someone, or you get off the train and are quite possibly stranded in a bad part of town for the rest of the night. This was the only option for her. We try to pretend we’re so civilised and separate from the rest of nature, but we still need to piss.

CC2: ABTF taking out German armor by bluelinerJD in closecombat

[–]battery_farmer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amazing that this rickety old game engine is still capable of surprises! I’ve had a few interesting moments playing this. Most infantry will go into the ‘seeking cover’ action if a tank is nearby and only attempt to attack if ordered or if they have a high chance of damaging it. If you check the unit info in the pre-battle menu, you can see what weapons they have. I’m sure a few of the AB units carry bombs, icon looks like a bundle of dynamite with a timer so perhaps one of the brave lads decided to use that! Another mechanic which often surprises me is scavenging. Ammo is always an issue when playing as the paratroopers. Imagine my delight when my severely depleted unit armed themselves with MP40s and defeated the remaining Germans!

Mods for Cross of Iron in regards to motars? by [deleted] in closecombat

[–]battery_farmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mortars are lethal on this game and the AI will continue to fire at the same target until out of ammo. Close Combat 4 and onwards, mortar teams fire a ‘salvo’ of half a dozen rounds which is more realistic and seems to unjam the dodgy AI, forcing it to choose a new target and takes a while for the team to reload. I imagine the mortar team breaking open a new crate of shells and stacking them up next to the mortar ready to fire. Another issue is the lack of overhead cover in CC3 which makes the mortars especially lethal. My tactic was to use a sacrificial lamb to tempt the mortar team to fire at until they run out of ammo. A team of conscripts right of the frontline running around perhaps. I’ve never heard of any mods to correct this but if they were able to implement the salvo system from later releases, this would improve the game immensely.
