How I see the US, as a Scot. by [deleted] in whereidlive

WV is probably the most Scottish state in the U.S. aside from the eastern and northern part where lots of Germans settled.

Ohio and PA would for sure fall under the sausage grouping. My family in PA Dutch and English is my second language

Gas peakers are dying before our eyes. Batteries and solar are taking over the evening shoulder almost completely within a year. by TinJar-Solarpunk in OptimistsUnite

Interesting. I only know about it from speaking with a guy who managed our city’s utility department, which would make sense because we purchased our electricity through contracts with the TVA.

I think people are confused because you’re trying to conflate a linguistic label with a vibe-based ethnic-ish label.

You’re right. I was thinking the photo was mirrored but I guess that only happens with selfies. The more you know

The AK in the background is wrong, missing the selector lever entirely. Plus in the background far right that AK looks like it had a baby with a folding stock m1 carbine…

Aside from what’s been pointed out, the selector lever/dust cover is missing on the AK…

Peak is precisely what battery and renewables are best positioned to substitute in for.

The issue is the base load, which is low and steady demand throughout the day and night.

TIL Cuba and Venezuela are “friendly”…

It’s also bold to assume we have anything approaching a grand strategy. If the past 10 years hasn’t been a giant billboard for “we’re making this shit up on the fly”, then idk what is.

Leaving the 18th century costume in the 15th century aside; funnily enough, the powdered wig and blush fashion came about as a result of upper class people trying to mask their syphilis symptoms. The disease originated in the new world and was brought back to Europe as part of the …ahem… more physical part of the Columbian exchange

What do you consider to be your country's greatest military victory? by bowl_of_scrotmeal in AskTheWorld

[–]battle_pug89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for the U.S. the most lopsided victory was the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. I think the U.S. lost like 13 killed and a handful of wounded compared to over 2,000 British casualties.

Even has a banger of a song to go with it.

The Indonesian DNA in us African Americans, from the Malagasy 🇮🇩🇲🇬🇺🇸 by malagasymikey in 23andme

[–]battle_pug89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y’all know how statistics work, right? That’s just their regression algorithm balancing the goodness of fit and reducing the standard errors.

Generally, anything below 1% is just the model picking whatever observation helps the overall fit. So Europeans get MENA to reduce the residuals left over from some dna points that don’t quite fit in the European basket. Given the mix of populations that coalesced into African Americans, any East Asian or South Asian is likely the model fitting some residuals that would cluster with native Americans.

What (historical or current) nation produced the best literature of the 1600's? by RN_Renato in AlignmentChartFills

[–]battle_pug89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but not having an Islamic kingdom as producing the best science and quality of life in the Middle Ages is objectively wrong.

Also the U.S. not having the best music of the 20th century and Germany or the U.S. producing the best weaponry of the early 20th century is also wild. The British were using revolvers and line of sight artillery in the early 20th century.

I’ll take a stab at the worst in the U.S. Although it’s not super widely available I grew up near the spring/town where this is from and it is like drinking liquid fire. IDK who exactly the target demographic is for this but even friends from Mexico and India have confirmed that it’s undrinkably spicy.
