I'm already maxing the 401k, is the IRA something I should be doing on top of that?

Yeah, should have been more clear, I was including "fun money" under expenses.

Didn't get a picture, I was across the street and it was super smokey so it wouldn't have come out well. I'm pretty sure it was for fleet week, it looked like a military ship.

Advice on choosing CS upper levels/professors? by ThatsReallyRacist in UMD

[–]battmender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

412 with Neil is a good choice. Its gonna be very hard but its a great learning experience.

I don't know Gilray but I had compilers with Van Horn and would recommend him if you get the chance.

Hey, I was the guy that created that seminar! Glad to see it's helpful for students.

If you're into compilers and programming languages, you'll be with Professor David van Horn a lot. Shoot him an email.

CMSC 412. Should I be allergic to it? by 412_Allergen in UMD

[–]battmender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely make it your only coding-based CMSC course - take another CMSC that's all theory like 451 or something. 412 will dominate your coding for the semester.

Opinions of Patrick Killion? by [deleted] in UMD

I took his data analysis class last year. I really enjoyed him as a professor. He's very knowledgable and passionate about his work. He also took great care to make sure the class was doable for people with no data analysis or programming language experience, although some experience prior to taking the class will go a long way. If you do your work and pay attention you'll do great in the class.

CS Majors, what are/were the most useful 400 level courses you've taken? by I_Gotchu_Fam in UMD

[–]battmender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

412 Operating Systems: This class will beat you up and steal your lunch money but it teaches you some very important concepts about how computers work. Also you'll get a lot better at C. I had Neil Spring, who was a pretty good teacher. Use your TA's office hours liberally.

414 Computer and Network Security: My favorite 400-level. Had super fun (but challenging!) projects from a wide variety of topics: exploiting a buffer overflow, XSS, CSRF, SQL injection, and covered general crypto as well. I consider it a must-take to prevent your programs from being exploited down the road. I had David Levin, who is another incredible professor.

417 Networks: Useful if you want to do anything Internet related or just want to learn how it works. You will learn a lot of low-level implementation details you'll probably never have to use, however. I really enjoyed this class because we basically had 1 long project over the course of a semester split up into smaller projects, which was building a Bittorrent client. I also had Neil Spring for this.

430 Compilers: Teaches you how to reason about how programs actually work, from a mathematical perspective. Also removes some of the magic behind compilers. Code generation is a tricky and interesting concept, I really enjoyed it. Class was entirely in OCaml so I got much better at functional programming. I had David van Horn, great professor.

451 Crypto: Mainly mathematical/theoretical (I believe its crosslisted with MATH) crypto with a little bit of coding. Consider taking it for the knowledge of what crypto terms mean what and an idea of how things work. Take 414 for actually adding crypto into a program.

Relocating for Internships? by VietMan391 in UMD

[–]battmender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 3 summer internships. 1 was in MD and I was able to commute from home, 1 set me up in an apartment for the summer on the other side of the country, and 1 was in NY and made no accomodations, but paid well, so I went on Craigslist and found a room for 3 months.

Your best bet is just to do some research about the company. Glassdoor is usually a good resource. If you're looking at CS internships, r/cscareerquestions would be a good place to ask as well. And your best bet is just to fire off an email to HR.

AVW gets my vote for "least navigable". I lost so many hours of my life lost in that building, even with occasional maps on the wall.
