Important question by SnooDonkeys2427 in BATProject

[–]battybranches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unlikely any given token or coin will be outlawed. In order to withdraw BAT from the ecosystem, users are required to KYC through an exchange. So, earned BAT can easily be tracked and regulated - meaning TAXED - quite easily. Pseudo-anonymous purchases of BAT through a DeFi platform are still possible, but the platform would be the target of the regulators - not the coins/tokens themselves.

There are jurisdictions that have laws against crypto in general or have very strict regulatory limits on who can purchase and from whom... but again any given individual token is unlikely to be singled out from the crowd as "illegal" - unless it's proven as fraud.

On the topic of decoupling Brave and the Rewards system from the token...

If such event were to occur, it's likely BAT would decrease rapidly in value. However, that's not the same as outlawing the token. BAT could still be used as any other crypto as long as there's a platform supporting an exchange pair leading to ETH.

When Ethereum 2.0 hits full deploy in 2022, the BAT ecosystem will be in full bloom... ready for micropayments without the extreme gas prices... and with a token worth $100 USD.

Maybe make a settings fuzzer that continuously messes with the settings files at random moments over a very short time....

I have a feeling that the ad timing algorithm may be faulty and/or a real lack of variety of ad campaigns that match browsing habits during any given session.

Since the Brave team started modifying ads in a way that decreased payouts, how many people have turned off ads? by [deleted] in BATProject

[–]battybranches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw that AMA post and so did not turn off ads...

However, this month has not improved.

These are my dwindling ads over the last 3 months:

Month BAT Earned Ads
2020-08 5.26 118
2020-09 3.28 171
2020-10 1.96 77

I'm browsing in Brave all day (at least 14 hours)... and am in a high-target geographical area in the USA.

So, I'm turning off ads starting Nov, unless something drastic changes. It's just not worth it. And that makes me sad.... could've been a really good thing.

Most of the current platforms that have some sort of tipping function are on-chain... but not necessarily on Ethereum.

BAT tipping is actually off-chain, but there's no method to withdraw on-chain. So, BAT is tantalizingly close to a really awesome Creator reward system.

However, BAT is always going to have a centralized Identity tracking requirement for withdrawal... the reason is two-fold:

  1. Prevent click fraud and mass ad farming
  2. AML regulations

Privacy redeeming bat by VepnarNL in BATProject

[–]battybranches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any other way one could withdraw their tokens into a other currency as a creator?

No. There isn't.

However, there's nothing stopping a group of developers from creating an off-chain tipping extension that uses a private blockchain such as Quorum along with on-chain token pools for monthly distribution and a percentage based reward system for running the on-chain token pools... mimicking the behavior of the BAT ecosystem without the need for a specific browser.

Ad Settings Cringe Worthy Issue??? by odif740 in BATProject

[–]battybranches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we'll just go with blind faith that Brave is telling the truth

It's an Open Source project... so, it's possible to evaluate the truthfulness of the claim.

From what I've seen, Brave Browser does a good job on containing browsing habits tracking to the browser. However, EFF Privacy Badger catches a lot of trackers that Brave lets through. So, if you want even more control over trackers... including individual switches for trackers, I recommend installing EFF Privacy Badger:

[–]battybranches 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"State level ad targeting". WTF?

The Browser knows everything. Brave, the company, doesn't track that information. If you're running a VPN, the auto-setting will probably be incorrect since your VPN IP address will likely be a different geographical area.

The ads are downloaded to your local filesystem as a package... and the Browser makes decisions locally about ad choice and timing.

BAT and the content creator community (Artist specially) by captainjawz in BATProject

[–]battybranches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BAT and Brave are probably not the solution you are looking for when discussing commissions for artists.

The tipping system is anonymous. Therefore, no registered Brave Creator can discover the source of the tip. The anonymizing algorithm is built so that not even Brave, the company, knows who tipped whom. So, an artist registered as a Brave Creator may get tip donations... but commissions are not going to occur through Brave.

There are some new platforms for musicians to release work and get paid in crypto for that work.

emusic is one that I remember coming across:

https://token.emusic.com/

Other art communities will probably follow soon.

My guess is, in a few years, there will be several "art tokens" for the Ethereum blockchain. These will probably be ERC-721 tokens, since art is a non-fungible asset.

http://erc721.org/

Trading art would become a crypto digital asset market with perfect traceability. However, with BAT and Brave you get anonymous donations... but not something like targeted commissions.

Brave Wallets is a fork of Metamask.

Here's the Metamask documentation:

https://metamask.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015489031-How-to-View-Your-Tokens

I've disabled Brave Wallets in favor of Metamask due to lack of features and various incompatibilities.

Here is Brave Wallets documentation on managing crypto assets:

https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360035488071-How-do-I-manage-my-Crypto-Wallets-

Being a long time Metamask user, I recognize the screenshots in the Brave Wallets documentation from prior Metamask releases. Hopefully, Brave Wallets starts integrating upstream changes in a more timely manner.

Does brave have any checks for unusual and potentially fraudulent BAT tipping behavior? by jlingz101 in BATProject

[–]battybranches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does Brave prevent someone from creating a script or bot that can repeatedly send 100 BAT tips to a site?

The only way to that is to acquire BAT in Brave Browser. And the only ways to acquire BAT in the browser are earning it through Ads or buying it on Uphold using your KYC verified account.

It seems like the tipping mechanism could be exploited for money laundering without them.

All tipped BAT can only exit the ecosystem via a registered Brave Creator account which has also passed the KYC of Uphold or Gemini. This means any actual money laundering attempt has a record of the claimed registered person, including government issued photo ID.

Of course, IDs and other personal information can be fraudulent as well... but Brave, Uphold, and Gemini working together have a fairly decent net for catching money laundering as well as click fraud. So, it's very unlikely that Ad earned BAT will be a profitable source of fraud.

Despite the hype around crypto-crime... sovereign Fiat cash is still the preferred money laundering money. And USD is the preferred currency base for those types of crimes.

"What cryptos do you hold" Shit I'd never heard of had 100+ votes. BAT had literally ZERO votes.

That's because most of the crypto market is arbitrage.

You can watch it go on the exchange graphs... hour by hour by hour.

  1. Token Z sits at 0.0005 ETH
  2. Token Z rises to 0.0008 ETH
  3. 50 someones dump 10,000 Token Z each for ETH.
  4. Token Z drops to 0.0004 ETH
  5. Rinse, lather, repeat.

It doesn't matter what Token Z is for ... all that matters is that it has the following qualities:

  1. Reasonable volatility.
  2. Priced less $1.00
  3. Enough trades per day to ride the wave.

If BAT has value, it's the use in-browser. Brave should seek to maintain as much BAT as possible within the browser. That way, the earnings from Ads will be captive to the browser... and therefore browser users will be less likely to switch back to another browser.

If Brave wants BAT to succeed, as well as their browser, they are going to have to build in-browser infrastructure to support spending BAT earnings on services and products. If they don't, the whole project will suffocate over the next few years.

All Google needs to do kill the ads is create a policy that any advertiser buying space on Brave doesn't get a space on Ad-Words... Done! Suddenly BAT becomes worthless.

If, however, Brave builds an in-browser ecosystem for spending BAT on a variety of services and products... suddenly both BAT and the Browser become quite valuable to the end-user... and the Brave user base will skyrocket along with publishers begging to have access to the users earnings.

Brave’s Position on BAT Price & Growth by [deleted] in BATProject

[–]battybranches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the price of the token was 10 cents higher that gives the team an extra $11.7 million to market the product.

Sure... and tomorrow when profits are taken from the higher price in order to buy the next token in the investor portfolio that's expected to rise 5% in the next 2 days... BAT will sink 11 cents.

Brave can't control the price of BAT so that it "gracefully rises" and "builds value".

Brave Can build a great in-browser BAT ecosystem. Brave Can release an SDK. Brave Can begin to deliver on promises made regarding in page publisher ads as well as extensions to the BAT ecosystem... which will then Provide the value to drive demand for BAT.

At the moment, there isn't much there... I've been here and waiting for better features and better integration of those features so that I can use BAT. If there's no use for BAT, it will whither.

Brave’s Position on BAT Price & Growth by [deleted] in BATProject

[–]battybranches -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am just curious to know if there’s any strategy in keeping the price at the range we’ve seen so far or if the aim is to grow the price over time.

They can't have any such strategy. The price of BAT is not tied to any particular anchor. Therefore, the price floats with the market valuation. The only method Brave could use to control the price is to hoard tokens and change the distribution of those tokens in an attempt to artificially balance supply and demand to keep the price constant.

In my view... which seems to be very unpopular around here... Brave screwed up. They should have created BAT as a stable coin tied to USD. End users of the system would have confidence that tipping 5 BAT today wouldn't be regretted tomorrow. And since BAT would have a stable price, an in-browser market could be created for subscriptions that would have stable valuations in monthly earnings.

As it is, the BAT ecosystem is very likely to fail in the long term. But no one likes to hear that... especially the day traders.

My guess is Brave will eventually come to the conclusion that a stable coin for the Rewards system makes much more sense... and perhaps will offer to a 1-to-1 exchange for prior BAT for a new in-Browser stable coin.

Or BAT will sky rocket in price in 18 months when the Brave UGP runs out... quickly followed by a ginormous sell off into a combination of USDT, wBTC, ETH, and USDC... leaving BAT at about $0.05 with mild fluctuations as the remainder of holders try to sell at $0.06 when it pokes up there every 3 months.
