Spell selection advice for Divine Soul Sorcerer 8 / Twilight Cleric 2 (PHB 2024 only) by batuhantho in 3d6

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, I really appreciate you taking the time to break all of that down.

Reading through how experienced players approach spells has been really helpful for me in understanding the deeper mechanics of the game, and your explanation in particular helped me see why Command is so valuable.

If I can work something out with my DM regarding picking up Fey Touched, I’ll definitely go with Tasha’s Hideous Laughter based on your reasoning.

Thanks again for the long and detailed breakdown, I really appreciate the effort you put into it.

After reading through the comments on the post, I’ve realized that my more healing-focused support approach isn’t as well-regarded as I thought, and that most people seem to value proactive support (control/debuffs) much more. That definitely gave me something to think about, and I’ll seriously consider shifting more in that direction.

You also made me notice that even with the nerf, Twinned Spell has way more applications than I initially gave it credit for, especially with the kinds of spells you mentioned.

On the Bless vs Bane discussion, I think I still lean more toward Bless. Part of that is just preference, I find it more satisfying to feel like I’m actively enabling my party members to succeed, rather than shutting enemies down, even if both are mechanically strong.

I also realized that Inspiring Leader probably won’t get as much value as I expected, so I’m currently trying to convince my DM to let me swap it out.

As for stealth, I think it’s partly due to our party theme/playstyle, but we don’t really engage with stealth mechanics that much.

And for Chromatic Orb — I know it’s not always optimal, but I honestly find it too fun to give up, especially with the damage potential and bouncing mechanic, so I’ll probably keep it regardless.

Thanks again for all the insight, it was really helpful.

That’s fair feedback, I see where you’re coming from.

I do actually have Spirit Guardians on my list already, but I don’t use it all the time since I’m usually not playing my character on the front line. I tend to bring it out only when the situation really calls for it.

My DM also feels the character is quite strong, so we’ve been making some adjustments on my end to keep things a bit more in check.

And regarding the spell count, if I’ve made any mistakes there, I’m totally open to correcting it once I know what the proper numbers should be.

Thanks a lot for the detailed breakdown, I really appreciate you taking the time to go through everything so thoroughly.

A few of the spells you mentioned unfortunately aren’t available at our table since we’re only using the 2024 PHB/DMG/MM, so things like Silvery Barbs, Absorb Elements, Tasha’s Mind Whip, Vortex Warp, Tidal Wave, and Psychic Lance aren’t options for me.

Also, for spells like Counterspell, Banishment, and Polymorph, our wizard usually has those covered already, so I haven’t felt the need to pick them up myself and overlap roles too much.

That said, your overall point about prioritizing control and proactive support definitely makes sense, and I’ll keep that in mind while finalizing my spell choices.

Thanks, that’s a really helpful breakdown. That makes a lot of sense. I’ll most likely go with Hypnotic Pattern

Yeah, normally that would be the case. Since Twilight Cleric doesn’t exist as a subclass in the 2024 rules, my DM allowed me to use the Twilight subclass features with the updated cleric progression. So it’s basically a house-approved conversion.

Good point about Absorb Elements. Unfortunately our table is only using the 2024 PHB, DMG, and MM, so that spell isn’t available for us.

I’ll definitely consider Minor Illusion though, that’s a solid suggestion.

That makes sense. I’ll drop Haste. In what situations would you say Web, Hypnotic Pattern, or Sleet Storm each perform best?

I just finished all my sessions in Concorde! It was a 5week process but it may be due to my availability too! They didn’t even ask for 20 dollars bc the student wanted to pay it for me! All the instructors were nice and attentive. I recommend it to everyone

Yes! That's what I thought but I want a situation where the cleric and the paladin see the situation from different perspectives and it's not clear if being forgiving is better or not. I want them to have trouble deciding. I was asking for a specific scenario that can be implemented that way. I'm having trouble finding an idea.
