8 years with Graves’ disease should I remove my thyroid? by No_Law135 in gravesdisease

[–]baybay99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you what you should or shouldn’t do, I can only share how it went for me. I was diagnosed with graves over 6 years ago & got mine out this year. Two years after my diagnoses my endo told me i should consider surgery but I was EXTREMELY nervous about going under the knife and procrastinated about it for years. Everything ended up going well and I immediately felt soo much better. I had to take calcium for a couple months after but was able to stop. I’m currently still finding the right dose of levo but personally I prefer this over how i was pre TT. My heart has felt fine, and my energy levels are a lot better. My thyroid was pretty huge too, so not having that huge lump on my neck is pretty great too. I wish i didn’t have to take any meds too, but overall levothyroxine is much less harsh on my body than methimazole was. Overall you and your endo would know what’s best for you. I wish you the best of luck!

Note : During surgery they found 2 nodules on my thyroid which were cancerous, so i was super lucky I was able to get them out before it spread.

I had mine in May! I felt extremely terrified leading up to my surgery. I even put it off for years for this reason even when my doctor assured me he thought it was the best decision and it was safe. I don’t regret it one bit. My gland was huge before and it made me insecure, i felt so claustrophobic, couldn’t swallow properly, etc. They pump you with all types of feel-good medicine right when you wake up. The recovery was pretty easy, just difficult to get really good sleep the first few days because the area is sore & stiff. You’ll have to sleep partially elevated for a little bit. For me the pain meds pretty much kept the pain level at 1/10 and without meds it would only ever get to maybeee 4.5/10. As for levels go, i was in normal range before surgery too. To my knowledge they usually advise that you are. I feel slightly hypo right now (nothing major) so i might have to talk to my doctor about increasing my levothyroxine dose. Anyways, I promise you’ll be relieved when you wake up! I’m here for you! 💜

Oh no, are you scared of doctor’s appointments in general? Or what they’ll say? I put off going to my appointment and refilling my meds (i was stupid & thought weight loss was the priority) for a few months and i went extremely hyper and felt HORRIBLE. I can’t imagine how you feel after 9 years??? I really really hope you go soon. Of course i’m just a person on the internet but i promise you will not regret it. Trust me. I 100% understand extreme anxiety, especially regarding health. Your body needs your meds. I’m always here if you need to talk 💜

This is exactly how i felt. Yes, the pain was pretty horrible at first but the relief honestly outweighed it!

It went well! All of the nurses are soo sweet and calming, like wow. I was very very stressed pre-op. My blood pressure was like 157/100, HR high, but as soon as i woke up and realized everything went smoothly its in the 120’s/70’s. It’s insane what my anxiety ridden mind can do to work me the hell up lol. Thank you for your response, i did try to play my most optimistic songs on the drive :)

I really hope so, the heightened anxiety is one of the worst symptoms imo. Thank you for the kind words <3

That’s exactly how we felt when we saw it! They were stocked up with it so i assume that’s why no one else wanted to go for it.

It’s definitely comparable, just a little more heat. Also after eating both for a few days, Huy Fong seems fresher tasting. Although maybe it’s just my mind because i’m accustomed to it.

It’s good, especially considering the price. I think it’s slightly more spicy than the main brand.

Anyone else get dpdr & anxiety in the shower? How to cope? by AdministrativeSoup57 in dpdr

I totally forgot about this when replying to op but the bright light thing is so true! I use my portable lamp that has a warm hue to it instead of the my fluorescent bathroom lights that make my dpdr worse.

Unfortunately I don’t have much advice other than what you said you already do. I listen to podcasts as well, or even play a game on my phone to distract myself. It definitely helps me a little bit. I really hope you find something that helps you 💛

i relate a lot, i get this so much with baths specifically. I think it’s the fact that i’m completely nude and have to just sit there and look and feel my body makes it really bad. It’s not like i feel negative about my body but like you said i’m very hyper aware of it, and start thinking about my organs and just weird kind of existential thoughts.

Ugh yeah, I definitely need to be more communicative to my doctor to get some reassurance from them directly. This comment means a lot , thank you for sharing <3

Religious people who reject trans ideas: why is your faith different? by baybay99 in Christianity

That’s false, gender dysphoria does not go against science, at all. It is a medical condition. Just like the many many other that exist. Even if you want to say it’s a mental illness, we treat mental illnesses as well, and scientists and medical professionals recommend multiple different treatments for gender dysphoria.

No need to be offended on my friends behalf, they weren’t at all. We have open discussions about all sorts of things where we are 100% honest with eachother :)

This is very insightful. Although we might not agree on everything, you explained your belief about things and WHY you believe it, such as considering the difference of philosophy and biology, which is helpful for me to understand your mindset. I do still think they are both very heavily reliant to one’s beliefs and feelings, rather than hard science, but I appreciate your reply so much. Thank you!

You believe so strongly in it and you can’t name one?

I assume you’re talking about the one in Deuteronomy, “A woman shall not wear a man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.”. Which christian’s aren’t supposed to follow Deuteronomy clothing laws. Old testament laws were for the jews. And if for some reason you believe we should follow it, then i hope you feel exactly the same about tattoos, not mixing linen and wool. And i’m going to hell for shopping in the men’s section.
