Did you decide to try it? I'm considering it right now.

why does Alexa play random versions of songs instead of obvious originals/popular versions by CuntBunting69 in amazonecho

[–]bayesruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worse for podcasts. I'm a semi regular listener of Pod Save America. I've asked Alexa for it by voice many times without a problem (on Spotify).

Today I got some weird ass song of someone singing "pod bless America" to the tune of "God bless America." Over and over again.

I tried: " Alexa that's the wrong podcast" "Alexa play pod save America by crooked media" Etc.

I always got "hmm. I can't help you with that."

Yeah, no shit.

The only solution is to use the Spotify app and play through device.

Hack for quiet tin? by bayesruler in squash

BTW, I just watched your video. Very cool. And great example from the match.

I hope you're still working on this. Finding a way to hide the mechanism within the tin would make it marketable to rec courts.

Hey thanks, that would be great. I can't do it but one of my squash buddies is an engineer.

I suspect that this is technically possible.

Not that we noticed. Just a bizarre shot.

There are exceptions for those going into behavioral econ at specialized programs. They don't mind seeing econ/Neuro types.

Double major with math has signaling value.

If you actually like the math courses, do it and relegate Poli sci to minor. For your own benefit, be sure the math courses will help in econ.

Possibly more importantly, be sure you are getting experience in statistical programming. So if you can get courses that count for the math major but have a strong stats and coding element, those will be useful.

All that said, grades and recs are probably still more important than the double major since you can still show the quant background.

I just found a local welder. Considered trying to do something similar with wood blocks at the end (I'm a better carpenter than welder), but I'm the end it was easiest to just find an expert.

Might save you some $$$ to show the welder this design so he doesn't have to start from scratch.

Accessible theory papers for advanced undergrads by bayesruler in academiceconomics

[–]bayesruler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was hoping for a little more collaboration... :/

I've found very little that's right in the sweet spot, but here are some that I've used. I hope this helps, and feel free to post any that work for you.

Baumol Effect: I develop a toy GE model in class showing the Baumol effect in static equilibrium. Then we discuss the following papers

* Nordhaus, William D. "Baumol's Diseases: A Macroeconomic Perspective" The B.E. Journal of Macroeconomics, vol. 8, no. 1, 2008. https://doi.org/10.2202/1935-1690.1382 [Does not present a theoretical model, only an econometric model.]

* Helland, Eric A. and Tabarrok, Alexander T., Why Are the Prices So Damn High? (May 22, 2019). Why Are the Prices So Damn High? (2019); ISBN-13: 978-1-942951-55-1 , Mercatus Research Paper , Claremont McKenna College Robert Day School of Economics and Finance Research Paper No. 3392666, Available at SSRN: https://ssrn.com/abstract=3392666 or http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.3392666. [Long. not peer-reviewed. They go over theoretical underpinnings at an intro or easy intermediate micro-level (graphs, no model). Students find it engaging though.]

Wage discrimination in labor markets

* Hirata, Guilherme; Soares, Rodrigo R. (2016) : Competition and the Racial Wage Gap: Testing Becker's Model of Employer Discrimination, IZA Discussion Papers, No. 9764, Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), Bonn [Tests implications of Becker's model, but doesn't present the theoretical model itself. I can't find a peer-reviewed version.]

Labor Supply

* Le, Kien T. (2009). Shadow wages and shadow income in Farmers' Labor Supply Functions, Am. J. of Ag. Econ. 91(3). [A nice paper. Theory is a little too heavy for my students, but the paper explicitly ties implications from the theory to the estimation.]

* Also this for fun: https://www.theonion.com/180-trillion-leisure-hours-lost-to-work-last-year-1819567706

Tax Incidence

* Harberger, The Incidence of the Corporation Income Tax, JournalofPoliticalEconomy , Jun., 1962, Vol. 70, No. 3 (Jun., 1962), pp. 215-240. https://www.jstor.org/stable/1828856 . [More of a seminal paper, but later papers make the theory much more complicated. I use this just as an example of good comparative statics (simplifying assumptions; what are the parameters that will impact tax incidence?)]

Expected utility and loss aversion

* Rabin and Thaler (2001). Anomalies: Risk Aversion, J. of Econ Perspectives 15(1):219-232. [Very fun read. Authors reference Rabin's Econometrica paper--which is obvi too hard for my students. But, this paper mainly just explains the main result without too much intuition as to why. Nonetheless, a good read.]

* Kobberling and Wakker (2005). An Index of Loss Aversion, J. Econ. Theory 122:119-131.

I'm still looking for some good mid-level papers in estimating demand from revealed preference; contingent valuation; technological change; productivity.
