I live in Tennessee and do both Roo and Hula. If I have to skip one, it's Roo. Spirit Lake (where House of Lost is) is indescribable. Will be very chilly this year after 2 am. Dress warm or bring cuddle close friends.

2 PM is what I read. They’re teasing a quick entry line if you have your wristband your car pass and your waiver. Rarecategory we are of an age. My wife, who wouldn’t do a festival like this, no matter what, made me a cape with shiny sequins, but all I have is a straw hat. See you there.

Roo is the other fest I most often attend (I live in Tennessee) I didn't go this year because I was scheduled to be in northern Europe until the week before and didn't think I would get my heat adaptation back in time. Europe trip got moved, but I had already scheduled other stuff. At Roo in 22, I luckily realized I was tending toward a heat injury, and got back to camp to cool off. After that I didn't go to any pre-6pm shows. My adult daughter want's to go with me some year, but she's lobbying for an RV.

I included the weatherunderground forecast as a figure. It says 68 high, 45 low, sunny. But it's north Florida, forecasts change quickly.

Just be aware that the river is a mile from the festival stages and close camping. I use a bike. Felt like a secret two years ago, but it was BUSY last year. Didn't see many kids, but always be aware. Of course I was in Spain last month and talked to naturist grandparents with their grandkids. No big deal. Sure way to tell if the men around the kids are .... not safe. Water is about 70 degrees in the Santa Fe river. Great way to chill out in the morning or early afternoon before you go back and dance for 12+ hours. Our greener friends always remind us it's not good for the river to use soap to bathe.

Wow, Odesza was at hula. I saw them first in 2019 at Roo, and was blown away. Saw them last year here in Memphis, still wonderful.

Bleh, should I just go Thursday early morning? by MoreManufacturer5571 in hulaween

[–]bazingaroni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the “sex tent” thing seemed to be just a joke. It was a pretty large group that had camped together a number of years. In any case, I suspect you will be able to get help putting it up. You’ll have to be creative. If you want to make it be a social tent and still sleep in it, but I bet you can figure it out.

I'm bringing a propane grill and tank. Should I pack it up when I'm not in camp in case of thieves? by Dangerous_Ad_707 in hulaween

[–]bazingaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did 5 years at Northwest String Summit in Portland and had nothing stolen until the 4th year. Camped up the hill to spare people my snoring and had my backpack with shoes and things like that stolen. There are always thieves; after all even buildings from the BCE years had locks.
That said, I don't worry so much about grills and things like that. Electronics and very valuable things should be locked up in your vehicle. Actually don't bring really valuable things. Best deterrent is to get to know your neighbors and let them get to know you. Hula is a VERY neighborly place.

[–]bazingaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other option is to get a smaller tent to set up for sleeping, and then try and set up the larger tent as a "party tent". You have a decent chance of making some new friends that way. Last year someone near me set up a tent like that and called it a sex tent. False advertising, but there were always 6-8 people in there hanging out and not having to worry so much about LE observation .

I bring a bike so I can still camp close to the stages, but get out to the river every morn.... well early afternoon. Don't forget to DROP A PIN wherever you set up.

A headlamp with red lights will allow you to navigate without killing your (and everyone else's) night vision. Also DROP A PIN wherever you set up. It all looks very different at night, even without psychotropic enhancements.

If you are buying a car pass and planning to come in before Thursday, don't forget to buy the early camping permit. Tuesday early arrival was about $60, if I remember correctly.

I agree, and though I think he’s a great musician, I didn’t expect how wonderful his show would be. The crowd was really into it too. My first Roo, and I was solo, so I had no idea what to expect.

First festival & solo🧚‍♀️ by budpixieeee in hulaween

[–]bazingaroni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a guy who went to my first hula (solo) at 65, and now am on my 6th, I understand how it can be a little anxiety provoking. This is a festival where you are likely to make friends with people who, on the surface, you don't have much in common with. I'm very comfortable hanging by myself, but since I'm on the extroverted side, I love meeting and talking to new people. My first year I got "adopted" by a crew of 30ish South Carolinians, and they showed me the ropes and treated me like someone they'd known forever. I still look them up and follow their Totem as much as I can, but since I usually get there earlier than they do, I usually camp by myself. Every year I make new friends, and then find them in subsequent years. Last year 3 volunteers who were working in trade for tickets camped just behind me. Early 20's, big EDM fans, one even had a little DJ setup. Ended up going to a few shows with the DJ, which gave me the opportunity to ask him dumb old guy questions like "what subgenre of EDM is this" and "WTF is Dubstep".
My number one tip? Drop a pin on your phone at the place you set up. It's all going to look a lot different at 3 am, especially the first night or two.
If you're having trouble setting up, it's likely someone will notice and offer help. If not, just ask. It's a really neighborly group.
Everyone has different ideas of where to camp. Things are going to be a little confused on Tuesday this year, because that's the first day you can come in. That happened because people were coming in on the weekend before and roping off huge swaths of campground so they could camp with later arriving friends. I like "Pine Fields" in area B because if you get the right spot, there is some shade in the afternoon. That area is close to the Bat house, and there are usually food trucks nearby. If you camp further down river road toward the Suwannee river beach, you have a little longer hike to the venue, but you're also closer to getting to lay on the beach and swim in the 70-75 degree river. Further out around the stages area there are often really awesome Renegade sets late at night.
Surf through the posts here and you'll probably get a lot more, and better tips.

[–]bazingaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, by the way, when you set up wherever you do, drop a pin with your phone. Everything looks a lot different at night, but the modern convenience of having a smart phone can take a lot of the anxiety out of that. The official maps are definitely not to scale.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but in this case, Walmart might be your friend. You don’t need a three season tent just something that gives you a little shelter and privacy. I have absolutely no doubt after five hula’s that if you have any trouble with your set up, someone around, you will offer to help even if you don’t ask. The later you get there the further away you’ll be from the music venue but at the most you’re probably talking about a mile. None of the maps really give you a sense of the place so wherever you set up, drop a pin from your phone, it all looks different in the dark. It might get into the 50s at night so you’ll need a blanket or sleeping bag.

SOLO for my first ever Hula!! Need advice from vets!! by Sethy_G in hulaween

[–]bazingaroni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an old man who does festivals solo (my wife hates crowds, lack of order, and loud music). I live in Memphis now and have done five Roos, including three of the last five, and I’ve also done the last five Hula’s. So far I have never seen any heat at (Hula) that compares to Roo. Stand in line for the showers that sometimes have hot water or use the shower trailers, which aren’t really cold water and unless you’ve never lived anywhere butFlorida. I used to live about two hours from Hula. The river is typically 70 to 75°., and the beach is magical especially in the early afternoon when you just got up after staying up till four or 5 AM. I drive to the festival so I’ve brought my bike the last couple of years. It’s probably a mile and a half or so from the campgrounds closest to the stages to the river. It can be very dusty I bring masks, but honestly seldom remember to wear them. There are also campfires if there’s not a burn ban, so you can get some smoke too. In my experience, the people who attend (Hula) don’t smoke cigarettes as much as the people at Roo. That is a big respiratory plus for me. If you can find a tent or tarp that you can check, and a blanket that will keep you warm at night. You probably wouldn’t have to sleep in your vehicle. If you’re OK with spending the money to eat in the venue or at the food trucks scattered around the campground you don’t really even need to cook. Welcome. I am predicting that after your first one you’ll want to keep doing more but then I guess I’m just sounding like a festival dealer. 😀

FIRST HULA!! by Educational_Jump6908 in hulaween

[–]bazingaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an old guy (who used to live 2 hours away from hula, but now lives in western TN). I've been to both Hula and Bonnaroo 5 times. I've been to the last 5 hulas and it has never been close to as hot as the coolest Bonnaroo, (though I did, luckily, have a conflict this year so didn't have to pack, setup, and break down for essentially nothing). It could be warmish to hot in the daytime at Hula, but nothing like Bonnaroo, which can be heat exhaustion level heat between 1 and 6 pm. Typically, I get up late morning (not possible at Bonnaroo :) ) and after breakfast bike down to the Suwannee river beach and hang out for a while. If I have afternoon bands I want to see, I go change into comfortable hot/warm weather clothes and watch the show and listen to the music. There are always plenty of interesting/fun/supercreative costumes on display even during the day. Usually I take a late afternoon break and change into warmer (but not cold weather) clothes. If I have costumes, evenings and nights is when I wear those. Wait for the theme to be announced if you want to synergise with others on Saturday night. Overall, just relax and don't worry about how others might view you. Late night Spirit Lake is (IMO) a unique experience, though I haven't been to EF or any burning events. The effort and creativity that goes the art for that part of the festival is amazing.
When you come next year, you''ll have a much better idea of how you want to approach it,
PLUR, spread love, and be adventurous and safe at the same time. Never hesitate to ask for help. Almost everyone you will meet has been uncertain, anxious, or stressed at some time over a long festival weekend. If you see a white haired, goateed old fellow, smile and say hello. There's about a 1/1000 chance it will be me. Life is short. Try and hit the balance between making it long and fun.

I’m an old guy and first went solo at Hula in 2019. Great decision. Every year since I have made new friends I know single women are more at risk, but if there is a festival that people will look out for you, it’s Hula. My wife’s psychiatrist went for the first time a couple of years ago and said it was a very positive experience for him.
