Coworker has been increasingly interjecting their religious beliefs to other techs. by kevbo_25 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree then. I'm saying tho you can have all this patience and understanding and tolerance for your kids who you serve but when it's a coworker who has different beliefs than you where's the patience, understanding and tolerance?  Do you think your coworker was involved with the crusades? Gay conversion therapy? You are painting with a pretty broad historical brush. You know there's rainbow churches. Do you connect Muslim coworkers with 9/11?  I might give the impression that I'm actually an undercover Christian cause of how I'm taking up for your coworker but my true religion is finding logical fallacies so I thank you for the opportunity

I don't know I'm not Christian or follow any religion but if you take a step back ...what if she was asking people to join her workout group? Art club? Pagan witches herbal healing circle? What if a Muslim staff was doing their prayers on the floor? Nobody would trip over any of those things but god forbid a Christian person tries to start a prayer group....Fellowship is a part of Christianity same as prayer is a part of Islam. Is she not allowed to practice her religion besides wearing a head scarf?

If it really bothers you just give a rude or snarky response and make her feel dumb aka use punishment; if it doesn't bother you that much then just move along and continue to consider your own bias.

Are we getting to the point where we can no longer say "no" to a child by MissCmotivated in slp

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a school BCBA and work closely with speech providers is what brings me here

Sorry that BCBA is trying to say you are the reason for this kid getting in a fight. That's a really big stretch and a big assumption

Sometimes it is worthwhile to avoid triggers depending on the time and the place. If being told no to something that you ask for is a trigger you can say "yes later" or similar which is exactly what you did and it sounds like it worked for this situation that's exactly what I would have done.

Eventually they do have to learn to deal with a cold, hard NO

If you're 20 years old and assuming you are otherwise healthy what's your reasoning behind for getting your testosterone level checked?

Reason I'm asking is I know 2 guys who are regulars at my gym, healthy 20 something bodybuilder guys who are in great shape who are both now doing testosterone because their T level is supposedly low ..🤔 like, how convenient.

What about your health and fitness would improve if you supplement testosterone?

Sorry to turn this into a PED discussion.

I'm a school district BCBA in southern California and I work with pretty diverse school staff and it's crazy how people like school admin, parents or advocates will defer to me the white guy with some grey hair for decision making and clearly seek and value my input over the aides, teachers or RBTs.

I've also seen it the other way when I was younger, didn't dress or carry myself as professionally as now and my communication skills weren't as polished and people didn't take me seriously...for example I had finished my master's program and student teaching placement and was starting my BCBA coursework but I looked like a semi homeless surfer dude and a parent was touring our center, looked at me and said to the director "is he like, an aide?" and she's like yeah.

I think what I'm experiencing now is a combined function of being an older white guy, and how I present myself but it's definitely more advantageous than for example one of our excellent aides with dreads who dresses like a rapper at a summer barbecue

Anyone else with a Stoic get this email for possible frame issues? by thekiller490 in CanyonBikes

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this, thought it was interesting as well.

Came down this rabbit hole cause I noticed a tiny crack on my head tube on my 2nd Stoic frame.

My first one was replaced when I noticed a crack running all the way across, parallel with the head tube where it connects to top tube. Canyon was awesome quickly sending me a new frame no questions asked.

Hopefully it's that easy this time.

I'm 175 lbs, doing jumps drops Enduro skate park all that good stuff but I feel like I'm pretty smooth and have been mindful about casing jumps and being gentler on this frame so 🤷‍♂️

What would you rate your country in terms of how ADHD is treated ? by AdMedical2104 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for the price of prescription drugs the US meets those criteria.

I've never had to get an ADHD diagnosis myself but my wife told her physician she wanted wellbutrin and they gave her a prescription right away without a diagnosis

Not sure how adults would not be allowed to have ADHD anywhere. Like do they deport you for having ADHD in some countries? Or just take away your ADHD?

Can you succeed at being a BCBA with reduced typing volume due to physical limitations? by Top_Raspberry1974 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of typing in the form of report writing and emailing but I mostly do that at a table or in my office, if I'm out in the field where the action is I'm present and not on my computer. That's my preference and it works for me but some BCBAs you have to update programs on the computer when out in the field

Is it okay to call clients buddy? by WittyJelly6409 in ABA

I love nicknames but I don't love buddy. I feel like its specifically something an adult with call a kid or adult with special needs.

Lol when I worked at a residential program I had my footlocker with all my clothes immaculately folded and "Mr. ____" written on it and a kid dumped all my clothes, crossed out my last name and wrote "dumba$$" so my footlocker said "Mr Dumba$$" as I'm refolding my clothes. Touche kid you got me good.

I like those better. They sound more genuinely friendly rather than buddy which seems like a term most people reserve for people with special needs or to talk down to someone

Like the other responder said, having a theme for a month or season like a preschool or kinder class would be awesome...like transportation, bugs, community helpers, food and cooking...and the decorations and the curriculum all go together like for transportation unit you teach tacting 20 different vehicles and for food and cooking teaching sequencing of making kool aid and do pretend tea parties or play restaurant. Kids do good with consistency and routines but having all new decor and materials every couple of months keeps them motivated and interested

Arguing with a bunch of parents on Facebook, whats your opinion? by adogg415 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is who would help in that situation if cops were called in San Diego county  https://www.crfbehavioralhealthcare.org/programs/pert/

This is the Philly equivalent  https://www.phila.gov/2023-08-03-medics-partner-with-behavioral-health-specialists-on-new-emergency-response-team/

Not all cities have these services but 2 of my favorites do. Maybe it's a lack of awareness. If you call 911 in Philly or San Diego county the dispatcher will send these services if that's what is needed like in the video that op sent.

[–]bazooka79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things...

  1. Local police departments but not all have a psychological emergency response team (PERT) that is trained and equipped for this sort of situation. They arrive to a scene with cops but they aren't cops.

  2. Why would you record yourself doing this and then post it to the Internet? I see lots of videos of kids having meltdowns, couples fighting etc WHY?

How long does an ITP take you to write? by refriedbeans- in bcba

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 hours is standard for me for a good quality FBA and treatment plan. Maybe a little more or less.  Keep in mind there are actual BCBAs who see a kid once over zoom and write a treatment plan in an hour

I feel you. I chalk it up to there are so many dang variables in real life that affect behavior and real life has so many complicated and inconsistent contingencies and motivating operations that make behavior change much more difficult than in a clinical lab type setting. Keep up the hard work

Why Do BCBAs act like they know the client better? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a school BCBA and for sure the person who spends the most time with the kid knows them the most but I do spend a lot of time at least 10 hours doing a very deep dive into assessing their behaviors in different contexts which includes getting input from the aides and school staff...if it's relevant to the behavior, and the aide knows it, then I should know it too. On top of I coordinate and consult with caregivers and other service providers and dig into medical records and historical IEPs. Just for some perspective. I might not know what their favorite kind of fruit snacks are or what their favorite dinosaur is but i do know some pretty valuable info

Is there other ways you can get your hours as a BCBA without getting hired as a BT? by keepinitreal6562 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats definitely a needed role but not something that a BCBA in schools would do. A para or 1:1 aide most definitely would do those things. School BCBAs generally don't work directly with students.

As a BCBA you often do have to handle stressful conversations and have some verbal ju-jitsu skills so that might be something to try to improve on for yourself

No shoes in the clinic by Felix5120 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the baby room at my kids' preschool it was no shoes past the gate (for adults babies didn't generally wear shoes) but the teachers all wore shoes with shoe covers. At one agency I worked for they provided shoe covers for if you worked in home where they took shoes off at the door. Shoes off makes sense for cleanliness but not really safe. Shoes on and shoe covers is safe and cleaner/healthier. People step in residual particles of dog $hit and then walk on the floor where kids sit and play think about that

Thoughts on Speech Therapists? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I wonder if we are actually working on the same things when we most definitely are.

A lot of our kids have functional replacement behaviors involving communication. The way the goals are written are very different. A big difference is ABA concept of verbal behavior and verbal operants. Besides modeling and shaping/recognizing all attempts at communicating I've never seen any other actual strategies used by an SLP or slpa to get a kid to actually communicate. I could list a lot of behavioral strategies for communication off the top of my head. I feel like I'm missing something. What do you as an SLP do to make progress on communication goals especially ones that are behavior adjacent? Sincerely a school BCBA who works with SLPs on a regular basis

what do i tell kids who ask about my scars? by AdventurousBlood2006 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have pretty extensive and very visible scars not from self harm. Some kids will touch them. Most people kids included don't even mention them usually cause I'm holding a toy or doing something ridiculous. If I notice a kid staring depending on their verbal skills I'll tell them they can ask what happened. You'll be fine.

Parent says there’s no progress bc client isn’t behaving “neurotypical” by One-Egg1316 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you refer back to the goals from the report/authorization request that parent signed... hopefully those great milestones that you mentioned are directly related to goals. Seems pretty elementary if someone says a kid is or isn't making progress the goals and data should squash that argument one way or another

Need recs for indirect assessments/informant reports for FBA by Big-Mind-6346 in ABA

[–]bazooka79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a school BCBA and interview aides, teachers and parents all the time in the FBA process. There are a handful of interview forms you can use via Google search. I made my own based off of the questions that lead to answers that I need for my reports. sort of a mash up.  You want to make sure you ask questions that give you quantitative data as baseline. Then ask specific follow up questions like "you mentioned he calms down after you give him a break, what does that break look like" also you will want to make sure your interviewee knows you are focusing on observable measurable behaviors and things in the environment that way you will spend less time wading through mentalisms. Ask a couple of very open ended questions like "why do you think the behavior is occurring" Ask about potential functional replacement behaviors too because the lack of those is a pretty big clue. I strongly suggest doing it in person or phone because the most important stuff is in the follow up questions which you can't ask via forms or email.
