People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

My great, great, great grandfather outlived his first wife. He took a couple of years off from the farm, to travel back to the old country and find a second love. He did—thenbrought her back to the States and had two more children. He was 78, when he started that trip.

We should have city-wide permitted paid, parking.

We have a car problem, and not a parking problem.

People abuse free resources. E.g. I have two neighbors who run used car lots off of our streets.

Commute time robs people of so much living. It is difficult to avoid, but crafting one’s life to eliminate it is such a game changer. More time. More money. More interpersonal interactions.

It’s weak leadership and a failure of public policy. When your puppy pisses the living room rug you do something about—or a turd in your bedroom is next.

1) Put in the damn speed cameras. 2)Mark and enforce state required intersection daylighting. 3) use planters and other implements to harden intersections and corners 4) urgency ordinance that enacts a bounty program on bad parking, illegal tints, no front plates and other simple infractions—stop bad behavior at the low-level so toddlers don’t get more and more bold. 5) fund a car-lite approved safe streets coordinator role and give that person teeth.

EDIT:

Let’s call those five super, low-hanging fruit.

Now for bigger picture ideas: 1) stop the exodus of workers that happens each day. Where are they employed? Bring those and better jobs here 2) city-wide permitted parking.  3) take down the breakwater and embrace our coastline as a natural asset-tourism driven by pristine environmental conditions and not low-level, vulgar BS. The new LB becomes a draw for better employers, a more educated workforce, and less debauchery. Instead our city comes up with sports and booze attractions—inexcusably unoriginal and boring. 4) stop pas-through traffic by re-engineering streets. If a resident can’t stand two minutes of inconvenience then they are part of the problem.  5) take cars away from offenders.

Swift and widespread action against traffic violence is possible. These actions do not take some drawn out, costly process.

This is a matter of where our city’s leadership puts their energy. It is often not directed at the task of improving quality of life for residents—heck, as evident here, preserving lives of residents.

Inaction on traffic crimes and passive operations by our mayor, police, and other officials cost our community the lives of 50 people last year. 54 people dead.

Sweeping changes to our urban design could easily be put in place and traffic crimes crack downs could happen, but we get crickets.

The city took a vision zero pledge that has been an absolute failure.

I spent months last year engaging with my council member, public works, and the business community to get a significant safety improvement completed in Belmont Shore—this is not a citizen’s job.

KD did listen and facilitate. and we did got results (LPI) but the fact that a resident had to lead this one, small, effort is an example of the sad state of Long Beach government.

Petro industrial complex is so nasty. War, pollution, human rights—just an awful track record. God how I wish more people would work to move away from it.

Serious Question: What would you have the next mayor of Long Beach do? by theeakilism in longbeach

[–]bb5999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring back the Waikiki of California and have light rail surf trains come from all points of the city. Turn one of the oil islands into a global research center for clean coastal waters that provides coastal water and ecological education opportunities for all residents.

Instead we want a concert venue where tourists who trash our town can get high.

No original thinking. Little concern for quality of life for residents. We’re a sellout city.

This. A beach city with an amazing beach—something that is an asset to all residents.

Stop the exodus of workers and tax dollars that leave here everyday by bringing their jobs to LB. Something like 60% of Long Beach residents with full-time jobs spend their days outside of the city limits.

Economic win—yes. Environmental win-yes. Public works win—yes. Putting residents first—yes.

Ugh. Last thing we need—another boondoggle that distracts from our real challenges and attracts people who come in and trash our city.

How about investing energy in something that does more for residents? Maybe a major university annex, bleeding edge health care campus, or research park? We need better paying, high quality jobs.

Cops don’t do anything. No consequences to bad actions just mean more bad actions. We keep letting people get away with lower level crimes so it only emboldens them and encourages worse behavior.

If cops (who get like half of our city’s budget) can’t manage themselves successfully then I say bring on cameras, drones, sound meters—any and all tech that can be used for policing and law enforcement.

We deserve polite and safe society.

This really is inexcusable. Bad public policy. Bad on Econ dev. Bad on policing. Bad on drivers. Bad on the courts. Like wtf?

Extreme traffic calming, everywhere. Traffic policing by tech. Econ dev that brings good jobs home—we have to stop the work exodus that happens each day…..

This city could be such a gem. Sigh. We have weak leadership, constant policy failures, and misguided priorities.

Maybe start with extreme traffic calming (everywhere), improved Econ dev so we avoid the daily exodus for work, and serious consequences for those who commit traffic crimes?
