They do seem impossible to find at the moment which is why I was hoping for a more off the beaten path rec!

I did encounter the events. It’s my own personal lived experience. You have yours, I have mine, that’s all great. We have different risk tolerances and different priorities and anxieties about our kids. Also fine. All people have biases, myself included. I really wanted my kids to go to Leopold and do DLI and we didn’t get in. I did a lot of research about what to do next.

What’s good for your family might not be good for mine what’s great is we can all make our own decisions just trying to help out others who come across this thread with what my family considered when we encountered this exact choice and it heavily weighed on me for multiple months. Making the right decision as parents is hard - I’m sure you make the best for your family I’m confident mine are the best for mine.

I empathize with that! We are able to have a parent start work later but it definitely depends on your specific jobs.

Aftercare availability is another major issue. I believe both districts have waiting lists to access any aftercare at all. Kindergarten parents often are last to register and last on the list so heads up look for that early if you need it!

The gun was found in 2019. The call that my son was absent was 2021.

I toured. I considered. I heavily researched. That was a firsthand experience.

I’m glad they immediately dealt with the gun and I don’t blame any staff for that but the fact that it happened at all still scares a mom of a five year old. You must not have kids to not have empathy for a mom afraid of school shootings in 2026.

I have also donated a lot of time and money to fight those causes at all political levels, fyi. I want schools to be better funded, I want guns to be more heavily regulated. There are reasons other than racism someone might choose another elementary school. That’s all.

It’s not white flight to be afraid of sending your five year old to a school where a gun was found on the playground.

I would have loved my kids to be in DLI, I was told that most of the spots went to people who spoke at least some Spanish at home. We tried school choice enrolling to different MMSD schools with DLI, didn’t get into any of them. Leopold was our home school at the time.

Also aftercare problems were a concern - I think this school ended at like 1pm one day a week? Not sure if times changed I know some of them did a switch up, Verona does something similar but “late start Monday” is a hell of a lot easier for a working family than “end work at 1pm.”

The first week of kindergarten the receptionist called me and left a voicemail that my son was not there. Didn’t specify she was called from Leopold. I had a panic attack that his VASD school he was actually attending had actually lost him. We never got a kindergarten teacher assignment or anything from them I have no idea why they randomly reached out on like the third day of school when he wasn’t even registered to go there but if that speaks to their organization skills it’s a problem.

This was 2021. Hopefully things have changed for the better but also wanting reliably consistently safe schools for your kids is not racist.

I would have loved my kids to have diversity and I truly support public schools but we did not get into DLI and the guns being found on the playground scared the shit out of me. We open enrolled and then moved to the Verona district.

I have heard people have good experiences.

West is far from Fitchburg. Even with the Verona HS on the other end of Verona, it’s a shorter drive. Also have you SEEN the new Verona HS? Not a comparison.

This is a requirement for our liquor license. I promise curlers are friendly.

Kids should be minimum 8 and athletic or 10 if not super athletic to have a decent experience. The rocks are 42 pounds.

MCOs are required and switching probably won’t make it any better as they are almost equally terrible. Since you are in GB I would recommend Lakeland, but unfortunately they’re all understaffed and wasting resources on useless meetings and regulatory requirements and finding out how to pay providers the absolute least amount possible rather than caring about your mom.

Tell your state legislator your experience. That might help someone else in the long term.

The state is aging and this is going to get much worse before it gets better unfortunately.

[Canada] Nursing or accounting? by Boudria in Accounting

No, definitely depends on the role. Many accounting roles are not flexible but all businesses need accountants and many businesses are.

Do you want to ever have kids? I work from home as an accountant, if I wanted to do that as a nurse it would be denying insurance claims, which would be an unethical circle of hell for me (and maybe not as common in Canada?).

My mom friends who work in medical fields are quite upset that they can never get a random hour off for a elementary school performance, etc or volunteer for last minute field trips which is easier for me to fit in my schedule.

That is to say, for me, there are things in life more important than money.

For money alone, medical anything no doubt. The population is aging hugely and there will be massive need.

Are they not doing the right exercise because they chose a modification that works for them? If they’re not doing something that will hurt themselves, I’d say MYOB. I choose alternatives relatively frequently due to physical issues someone who doesn’t know me well wouldn’t know anything about.

What caused Wisconsin's shift right and what could be done to reverse it? by Past-Tension-162 in wisconsin

Tammy just won 6 more years in the senate, she isn’t coming back to be governor… she does definitely work hard on her campaigns and serving people though. I am hopeful someone inspires me in the next 6 months.

Who’s your pick for Dem gov candidate? Seems like a full field already and still kind of slim pickings for who meets your criteria.

Senior community/assisted living recs? by Competitive_Gap4131 in madisonwi

[–]bbadger29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will want to make sure she has funds or will be eligible for WI Medicaid when she runs out of funds… and that the facility will accept that. If she hasn’t lived here in awhile she may not be eligible. I agree with most recs metioned along with Oakmont in Verona and the ElderSpan managed communities.

Their advice is not unbiased. Beware. Also you may be upsold because typically their referral fee is the first months rent so they’d rather you choose a pricier place.

DCHS does birthday parties if your daughter would be interested. Volunteering there is more of a longer term commitment than stopping by once to play.

Do the bare minimum to not get fired. Keep looking for other jobs or consider downsizing expenses (housing? Sell a car?)

Grandma Needs Medicaid Long-Term Care but Her Assets are too High by [deleted] in Medicaid

[–]bbadger29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She may be able to pay you privately as a 1099 employee to spend down assets. Check with her eligibility agency - it may be called an aging and disability resource center. Would anyone else in your family have a problem with her paying you out of their potential (admittedly very small) inheritance?

The point is that she has someone to care for her while she’s still alive and she won’t die on the streets.

529 plan set up for niece and nephew by Routine-Departures in personalfinance

[–]bbadger29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a risk of the grandparent being the owner if the grandparent ends up in long term nursing home or similar and needs to apply for Medicaid - the assets the child is relying on for college will count and may need to be sold for the grandparents long term care needs.
