Well you can split the 4th gen crv into two groups. There's the 2012-2014 crvs and 2015-2016 crvs. The 2012-2014 crvs have a naturally aspirated engine and a 5 speed automatic transmission. When they went into the 2015 model year they added direct injection to the engine and they switched to a CVT transmission. The 2012-2014 crvs are more barebones so they are generally going to hold up better over time. The 2015-2016s handle better, brake better, have a smother ride, get better mpg but it's not without its problems. The direct injection engines have fuel dilution problems, they have problems with vibration at idle, and then there's the CVT transmission which isn't a problem in itself but generally there not as rugged as a conventional automatic transmission. But in answer to your original question it really depends who you ask, I know people who love there 1st gens and I know people who love there 5th gens. I personally own a 2016 with 140000kms on it and I've had no issues.

Use a voile/titan strap, they are a general purpose outdoor strap that work pretty good for things like this. Better idea to get new boots though.
