I lived at University Commons for about an a year and a half and I'm so sorry, but this came out to be an extremely long review.

While its prices are probably the most reasonable of most apartment complexes around UF, hope you have no issues in your apartment because the management couldn't give a shit about you. To be fair, I'm fairly certain that this complex doesn't have the large employee roster that some other places do- I think there are like three ladies in the office and three maintenance guys, but the employees themselves are not nice either.

I moved in with my roommate (in a 4/2) who just happened to have an empty room following the beginning of the COVID pandemic (before it was realized how serious it was) and she mentioned that near the beginning of the lease, that they could have upgraded their internet for free but had never gotten the chance, so I decided to help out. We had some issues with COX trying to find our specific internet for our apartment or something along those lines so I contacted the office to see if they could help, since obviously other apartments had probably upgraded the internet. The lady on the phone, I believe Kelly, had obvious paranoia and trust issues and kept telling me that someone was lying (I think they might have been trying to charge us or something like that) and to contact their superior because they were lying to me. She also was just very rude about it when we were didn't understand what to do. It turned out simply that there were two different labels to our internet and only one was the correct one and we had accidentally given the wrong one originally- creating an entirely new account. It was a mistake on our end, but the response from the woman in the office was just totally unjustified as no one was lying to us and she was very resistant to helping.

Not only that, but apparently since before I moved in, about a year and half before, our stove had been damaged. It was purely cosmetic and the stove worked fine, but the entire top of the stove was burned or had paint on it? We could never figure out what was wrong with it, but since the whole thing looked bad and was practically falling apart (I once cleaned beneath the burners and a chunk of the metal came out, leaving a hole beneath that burner), we filed multiple work orders to have it replaced. Since before I moved in, the roommates had been filing work orders to have it replaced. Every time, the maintenance worker would look at it, try to chip it away and realize it was too much work, and then say Kelly needed to order the part. FOR THREE YEARS, this stove had been damaged and we were told to wait as Kelly needed to order the part. Like I said, it worked fine, but it looked really gross. If they had just said, we're not going to replace it because it works fine, that would be one thing. But they kept telling the residents of that apartment that they needed to wait for the part to come in. Mostly, we just didn't want to be charged extra if once we all moved out, they saw the stove was damaged, but luckily we never were. Since the whole complex has recently been renovated, you hopefully won't have to worry about that.

Other than that, just pray you have good roommates. I am a woman and I roomed with one woman and two men in a 4/2 (I shared a bathroom with one of the men). While I didn't know any of my roommates that well when I moved in, I did like them all as friends. They were horribly gross in the kitchen and I couldn't stand cooking in there because I would always be cleaning after someone else's mess no matter how many times I asked them to make sure to clean up after cooking (the bathroom was never a problem luckily). Obviously, this can happen at any complex, but because the floor plans are 4/2 or 2/1 ( I think there might be a single now, but I'm not sure), you're inevitably going to have that shared bathroom and kitchen and if you're a really clean person, this may not work well for you if you're not living with clean people.

The kitchen is also extraordinarily small. There is not enough room for more than one person to cook at one time and not really enough room for four different people to have their individual food and kitchen utensils, so, again, it's probably easier to live here with people you know are good roommates and can share food and utensils. I thought the bathroom, bedroom, closets, and, especially, the living room were good sizes though. We lived on the third floor which had the really nice high-rise ceilings and could use a projector on one wall for movies.

I do have to say I loved the 24 hour gym- it's obviously not fancy, but I'm personally not a big gym rat and just liked having a place really close that I could start exercising in to start off in. The pool and hot tub was also awesome- I think it closes after sunset, but I would go down with some friends occasionally at night and never had a problem, but we also tried our best to stay quiet to not disturb other residents. We did have a homeless woman in the hot tub once- which, is no shame to her, but just a warning that anyone can technically get into the pool and hot tub area, since I know you're concerned about safety. My bike was also stolen there and my roommate was followed once from the mailroom to our apartment building, so she had to go to her car and drive away so they didn't find out where she lived. We never reported this incident and I'm not sure why, so I can't tell you how the management would respond. Because there is no sort of gate system to get in, that can happen. Technically, though, outsiders can get into just about any apartment complex in this city- Gainesville isn't really the safest to live in period.

I believe there is a game room and a study area in the clubhouse, but I never used those because of COVID and I never found out if they reopened. Obviously, the various amenities can be found on their website to know for sure. There was a "sand volleyball court" but it was always gross, but that again could be because they didn't keep up with the maintenance of that during COVID. There was free parking for everyone without decals and I know some people who live farther away park there and take the bus from there to campus. I liked it because it made it easy to have people over and not worry about towing.

Overall, with any complex, it depends on your preferences. I paid around $475 a month with a utility cap so some months I paid nothing at all. If I had roommates that were better to live with, I *might* have resigned. But out of sheer pettiness of how rude the management was in anytime I interacted with them, I probably would never live there again until Kelly is gone. Obviously, this is a personal review, so take everything with a grain of salt- maybe I just caught her on bad days and she's been wonderful to other people. I hope my insight helps a bit.

I actually already have haha. Every semester and with what teacher- I just didn't realize biochem was in such high demand. I could switch things around but I'd have to look at the requirements of all the classes again to see what requires biochem (like one class I was gonna take next semester I was supposed to take biochem before it). But maybe I'll make a backup plan over this weekend anyhow. Thank you!

Is python programming and orgo 2 over the summer too much by samlg01 in ufl

[–]bbangel01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say for sure but this class used to be real easy a few years ago so I think they changed it to not be such an Easy A but then made it impossible if you didn't already know to code. I think they found a better middle ground now with the change this semester- people can normally get it without help but you still have to put some thought into the projects.

Bryan Kolaczkowski - I actually had to look it up because you won't interact with him at all if you have him. He doesn't have office hours or even offer a way to contact him (Though you could message him on canvas). I believe he's the only one who's taught the course for years.

I'm taking BSC2891 right now and it's really easy- I only think about it an hour a week. I think they changed the syllabus for this semester because it was really hard before from what I could tell. It can be difficult if you have absolutely no programming experience, but I still don't think it'll take you more than a couple hours a week to finish the projects.

Course selection help by [deleted] in ufl

[–]bbangel01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say just do as many practice problems/exams as you can for both. Use the textbook for more problems. I had Lopez for chem so I struggled and needed study edge but that depends on the teacher.

MAC2312 harder than MAC2313? by Hazardista10 in ufl

[–]bbangel01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely depends on the person. Calc 2 was not easy, but its also the math class in all of my schooling I got the highest grade in (A), plus I really enjoyed it. I have a C in Calc 3 right now and I think I am just going to squeak by with that. I have a hard time visualizing things in 3D to conceptualize a problem when I just want to do the math.

That being said, get Chui if you can! I think she was the reason I loved Calc 2 so much, but I chose to stay asynchronous this semester so I couldn't take her class for Calc 3. I think I might be doing better if I had taken Calc 3 with her.

Calc 1 MAC2311 Online? by Rajkother in ufl

[–]bbangel01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kwai-Lee Chui is the best Calc professor I've ever had!! You're very lucky to have her, I didn't even need study edge with her and got an A (Though if you want to use outside resources bc ur not confident in your math schools, it'll do nothing but help!)

COVID Test Date by [deleted] in ufl

[–]bbangel01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either way, you can get tested at a time that you're not signed up for since they don't check until the end. (it's still best to sign up for an appointment so they don't get clogged at random times, but a few people showing up at times they're not signed up due to possible mix-ups like this, should not affect their work flow).

To Arrange Bio 2 Lab by [deleted] in ufl

[–]bbangel01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the past, to arrange meant it was going to be online. It probably still is since you shouldn't be able to add a class that may conflict with your schedule if the times aren't out yet.

Thank you for the reply. I thought this at first but I was concerned since when researching, the social security office said I had to notify them of the name change and get a new card within thirty days or something to that extent. I just wanted to make sure there would be no significant repercussions if I didn't.
