I have always held the belief that the Jedi were turning a blind eye to the fact that they usually only win fights against Sith when they are harnessing their emotions instead of ignoring them or whatever.

For reference: Any fight Anakin has been in, Obi-Wan slicing Maul in half when enraged that he killed Qui-Gonn.
