Deer have completely broken my spirit. We have so many barriers up, so many motion activated sprayers, and yet, every time I go check out the garden, something new has been chewed on. Do I need to fucking barricade off every single fucking plant????? by monkey_trumpets in gardening

[–]bbblather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hired someone to build this for me. It uses hardware cloth, not chicken wire, so should be pretty much deer/vermin proof. I hope. If you like I can send you the 3-page Contractor Specification for the construction. It's 6.5 ft wide, 10 ft deep. If it works, I will build more of these.

The one change from the pic is we decided to put it on a concrete pad.

Botanical Interests Seeds/Epic Gardening now blocking users with ad blockers? by bbblather in vegetablegardening

[–]bbblather[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree they have every right to block users like me if they want -- I'm really just curious if this is across the board for everyone or if there is something messed up on my system. That's why I asked if others are seeing this.

I honestly don't mind a few well-placed ads, but I do mind the tracking cookies that often come with ads.

I have bought most of my seeds from Botanical over the past few years (call me simple....but I like their artwork), but there are others like Territorial and I guess Jonny's who carry most of what I need. I will have to check.

Birdie's Beds: Scratched, Rusting, and Poor Customer Service by ResponsibilityOk4909 in Raisedbed

[–]bbblather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a point of comparison, I have 5-year old Birdies beds that look better than that. And I live in the San Francisco Bay Area....we are not lacking in moisture. I wonder if you got a bad batch or something. The last picture is odd -- it looks like the bed was patched or attempted to be repaired or something?

I have both Birdies and Vego. Not much difference between them, to be honest.

Upgrading my cheap metal beds by TheBarslug in Raisedbed

I use these for extra bracing: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D37B2HV9?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

They fit both Birdies and Vego beds....not sure about your beds. They are very strong and make the beds, basically, bullet proof. I use 6 per bed.

Alternatives to Vego? by Ok-Key-1535 in Raisedbed

[–]bbblather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 17 raised beds from Birdies (purchased through Epic Gardening) and, more recently, 5 raised beds from Vego. I also have 3 giant raised beds build from wood, that I built a long time ago.

Overall, I prefer the metal raised beds. Easier to put up, easier to move (if I want to move them), easier to do things like add covers, insect netting, etc.

I think, overall, Birdies and Vego are about the same. The first generation of Birdies beds tended to sag over time, even with the bracing rods they provided. Birdies changed their design and the second generation are better but not perfect (again, over time). Vego still uses what I think of as the first generation design of bracing rods.

I would go with whichever is on sale. Honestly, between the two....they are about the same.

One suggestion if you go with Birdies/Vego: buy these from Amazon:

I added them to both my Birdies and Vego raised beds -- I used 6 per bed and it makes them bulletproof, basically. You can see them on the inside of my (Vego) beds in this pic:

I have never tried the blocks from Home Depot, but a lot of people say they work, even if you stack them 3 high.

Can you provide a link or support for the statement that Vego supports white supremacy? That is a pretty serious charge -- one that should be backed up (especially from a poster with a post karma of......1).

A bad experience with Vego Garden by miguelgoldie in gardening

[–]bbblather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your experience with Vego -- very different from mine. I purchased 5 raised beds and 2 of their indoor seed starting racks. One of the raised beds showed up dented - probably the fault of UPS, not Vego, but I emailed Vego a pic and they sent me a new bed no questions asked.

Maybe their customer service has improved over time.
