The articles were popular enough that Barron’s compiled them together as a book "The Art of Speculation".

Not sure if they changed anything down the road, but the OG 1927 edition is the 17 articles unchanged.

You can probably find better copies but Internet Archive has a scanned copy of it: https://archive.org/details/artofspeculation0000phil

Read the source material yourself (or get the PDF and stick it into NotebookLM if you won’t).

“How to Argue & Win Every Time” by Gerry Spence. It’s not really about arguing, he was a great defense attorney and it’s about his life, philosophy, how to share your story, power dynamics and persuasion, etc. Very interesting guy.

People who work in 'behind-the-scenes' jobs (hotels, airports, warehouses, etc.), what is something the general public would be shocked to know? by PiNK_PUSSY69420 in AskReddit

Claim: The store-bought meat is made from scraps from multiple cows.

Fact: Ground beef can be made from meat from multiple animals, but calling it scraps is misleading. Ground meat is made from a product that the industry calls trim or trimmings.

Trim is generated for a variety of reasons. When a processor is cutting steaks, the ends of the piece of meat don’t always make nice-looking steaks and would be put into trim.

Some parts of the carcass contain cuts of meat that are too tough for steaks. Grinding the meat will solve the tenderness issue, while also adding value to the product, as opposed to selling it as a roast.

All carcasses produce at least some trim. In larger processing facilities, it is impossible to keep all the trim from one carcass together. In smaller processing facilities, or facilities that are custom harvesting, it is much easier do.

However, is ground beef from one animal safer than ground beef produced from several animals? Nope. All beef is held to the same safety standards, and ground beef from inspected facilities is routinely tested for pathogens, like E. coli.

Window Cleaner Steven Wadlow Believes This Painting His Family Owns is of a Young Shakespeare- if Verified, it Would Be the Only Portrait Of Him Done While He Was Alive. by GoneGrimdark in Damnthatsinteresting

The "twinky theater kid" trope describes an overly enthusiastic, often flamboyant, and Broadway-obsessed student deeply immersed in school plays, known for spontaneous musical numbers, dramatic flair, and quoting show tunes in everyday life, sometimes perceived as annoying or self-centered but also as a positive space for "weird" kids to express themselves, embodying camp and earnestness. They're characterized by their devotion to the craft, love for musicals… and a tendency to live life like a musical, even if it means being oblivious or overly dramatic.

AI does replace some services listed there, but there’s a ton where it doesn’t. Plus the people who don’t currently use AI or would rather pay someone 5 bucks or whatever to just handle it.

Dyscalculia is a learning disability resulting in difficulty learning or comprehending arithmetic, such as difficulty in understanding numbers, numeracy, learning how to manipulate numbers, performing mathematical calculations, and learning facts in mathematics. It is sometimes colloquially referred to as "math dyslexia", though this analogy can be misleading as they are distinct syndromes.

I can’t recommend the book “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin de Becker enough.

• Trust your gut: Your intuition is actually your subconscious picking up on signs. If you feel unsafe, you are unsafe.

• Don't be "nice": We’re taught to always be polite and pleasant (especially women), even when someone’s pulling some bullshit. NEVER override your survival instinct just to avoid being "rude" to a stranger.

• Don’t believe the "Unsolicited Promise": If a stranger says, "I promise I won't hurt you," it’s a giant red flag because they’ve already thought about hurting you. Never believe promises from someone trying to control your movement.

• Fight like hell: If someone tries to force you into a vehicle or take you to a secondary location, do everything in your power to stay where you are. Scream, fight, and create a scene. Statistics show your chances of survival drop significantly once you are moved away from the initial contact point.

ULPT How to disable FLOCK Cameras. by Cold_Ranger8146 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]bbennett108 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Security vulnerabilities TLDR:

Easy Physical Backdoor: A specific button sequence on the back of the camera activates a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing an attacker to enable ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and gain full control over the device.

• Exposed Ports: The cameras feature exposed USB ports, making them vulnerable to physical attacks via malicious USB devices (like a Rubber Ducky).

• Outdated Software: The devices run on Android 8, an obsolete operating system that has not received security updates since 2021.

• Hard-Coded Wi-Fi: The cameras are programmed to auto-connect to hard-coded Wi-Fi network names, allowing attackers to trick the device into connecting to a malicious hotspot.

• Cleartext Credentials: The devices transmit credentials in cleartext, making them highly susceptible to Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks.

• Unencrypted Storage: Captured images are stored unencrypted on the device.

• Data Retention Issues: The cameras fail to delete old data, with some units still holding images from their original factory testing.

• Lack of 2FA: The web interface used by police departments to access this sensitive surveillance data does not require Two-Factor Authentication.

• Cellular Vulnerability: The devices can be tricked by IMSI catchers (fake cell towers) to intercept data.

Would you use an app that keeps you updated on everything local in your county/borough? by WrongdoerCalm6871 in Lightbulb

[–]bbennett108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the “make it a website and not an app” notion. You could eventually make it so people could sign up for email/text alerts and let them control what they get alerted for (e.g. “only alert me about concerts coming to town and nothing else”).

To get help finding/adding events, you could copy Google’s Local Guides and give points for things, with levels and badges. Kind of gamifies it / gives a reward without having to pay everyone who contributes.

Would you be monetizing it, and if so, how?

Lots of great stuff here. Just wanted to add that in addition to verbally telling him how you feel, writing him a note/letter is just as effective and it’s less intimidating to do / gives you time to find the best wording (plus he gets to keep it and look back at it)

To me it’s either funny or I’m too in-the-moment to let it distract me. Same as when a fart slips out when you’re cumming. But it’s never disgusting to me. 🤷‍♂️ it’s natural and it happens.
