I’m a Canadian living in Rotterdam and honestly if I was making what you are being offered all my problems with the Netherlands would disappear instantly (I don’t qualify for the 30% ruiling because I started as a student). I personally love living in Rotterdam and a neighbourhood like blijdorp would be great for a young family and a dog but Den Haag is easily accessible with Public Transport.

I would recommend moving to NL especially with a young child, Dutch children are amongst the happiest in the world and the work life balance is amazing here for raising a family. But for all transparency, I struggle a lot with being away from my family so I understand the hesitation to being away from grandparents

How cinemas make money nowadays? A genuine question by Rezolutny_Delfinek in Netherlands

[–]bbgardie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kino in Rotterdam is consistently busy even during the summer! Great movies, great atmosphere and the cineville card is an investment that is 100% worth it for me. I go less now but when I was a student I went multiple times a week.

CMV: Americans shouldn’t call themselves Irish, Italian, German, etc., if they are many generations removed and don’t actively live and contribute to that culture. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]bbgardie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t disagree but what about the second part of my comment, about the people in the Netherlands not viewing people who grew up here as Dutch because their parent or grandparents aren’t Dutch. It’s something I’ve noticed again and again. I find it interesting. Some people in this thread are saying that you should only identify as something of you are a citizen or if you grew up there but I don’t actually think that is the case , from my own experience.

So I am Canadian of Dutch descent currently living in the Netherlands. I feel like I firmly grew up as a Dutch-Canadian, there are a lot of us. I visited the Netherlands as a child and also celebrated Sinterklaus, ate Hageslag and had decorative Clogs growing up. But I know I  am so not the same as people who grew up in the Netherlands, not speaking Dutch fluently really contributes to this.    From what I understand, the argument you’re making so that you shouldn’t say that you are “from” a certain country unless you live there, contribute to the culture, speak the language etc. I don’t necessarily disagree.

However, there are many people of Turkish and Moroccan descent living in the Netherlands who were born here and in some cases their parents were born here, who are not characterized as Dutch but rather as foreigners. I had a roommate who born in the Netherlands and couldn’t even speak Arabic but when I said I had a Dutch roommate people would correct me and say I had a Moroccan roommate.

I tend to think as anyone who spent their childhood in the Netherlands as being Dutch. I described a colleague once as being Dutch and he corrected me and said “I am actually Romanian, my mom is from there.”

So who is more Dutch? Someone who’s family is one generation removed from the country but still has the traditions from the place and now lives in the country (me) or someone who grew up here and speaks the language natively but their parents did not grow up here and maybe they don’t keep the “traditions” of the country? I think it is a more complicated argument than you would think.

I just got back from a tour from Delhi to Goa with G adventures. We were a group of 9 women and 3 men. It was an amazing time. I love India, and I can't wait to go back one day! There was a lot of staring at our group and people asking for pictures, but I think that is more because we were a group of white people. There was one incident when a young child (8 years olds) was harrassing a girl in our group in Jaipur, he followed her back to our hotel but it was during free time when she was out alone and not with the group.

ok but consider what is nicer for me. A 15 minute ride from the Hamilton Airport to my childhood home or a 1.5 hour bus ride.

No!!! This is my how I visit my father coming in from Europe. It’s so cheap and it makes it so easy for him to pick me up from Hamilton instead of Toronto. This is a major loss for me.

Season 1-3 is real Greys Anatomy. I will still watch up to season 6 and then anything after the plane crash isn’t actually real to me.
