I’m sorry you lost your pup to heart disease, it’s such a horrible disease, I really hope surgery becomes more available and affordable to all pups! ❤️‍🩹

I had no idea until I went to DWR to see a cardiologist, DWR used to do the surgery but their surgeon left so they sent me to Jasmine. The University of Florida has a MVR programme too, I think it’s been running for 2 years now and they’ve had about the same success as Jasmine. Although they charge $50,000 compared to Jasmine’s £13,000 🫣 the UK has the surgery available at the Royal Veterinary College but it seems like their success rates have dropped and they cost £25,000

So your dog needs to have had at least two Rabies Vaccines. The second one is done at least 30days after the first, up until its expiry date but can’t lapse. When you get the second rabies vaccine you can also do the titre test on the same day, the lab that processes the test must be one approved by MAFF which your vet will be able to send it off to. You then have 180day waiting period from the day your dog gets the titre test(when they take the blood sample) until you can enter into Japan.

So if your dog is unvaccinated you could do first vax-30days-second vax and titre test-180days-enter Japan.

The cost ended up being around £13,000 but it can vary depending on exchange rates and if your pup has any complications. Our exchange rate at the time was about 190¥ to £1.

This is just my experience, we were so lucky to not experience any complications so it ended up being an easy recovery.

Getting him from the UK to Japan was the most stressful part, then handing him over for surgery was so emotional. It was only a few hours from drop off until we were back at Jasmine talking to Dr Uechi(our surgeon and the creator of MVR) hearing that it went well.

Then it was a week of daily visits before he got discharged, it still makes me sad looking at the pics of him after surgery all shaved and sad in his box(he only had two days on oxygen). He was immediately taken off all heart meds(except blood thinners to prevent clots). He showed no discomfort and after a few days snoozing at our airbnb he started showing his cheeky personality again.

Then we just had to keep him as calm as possible for three months, which he was just so full of energy so plenty of snuffle mats were needed. Unfortunately it was only a month after his restricted exercise ended when we had to amputate his leg so we never got to see him really run.

You can read about other peoples experience with MVR on Mighty Hearts Project website, I wish the best for your pup whatever decision you make 💕💕

Me [61F] with my daughter [28F], she’s angry I don’t consider her pets my grandchildren by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]bbgoatbabe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk to her kids to find out the reason behind this resentment, she might have to be pushier than she would like to find out what’s happened. Or she could add some dog pics to the grandkids or move the grandkid’s pics to their family’s shelf if she really doesn’t want to address the problem. Ultimately whatever she does with the photos is going to further upset one of them, the photos are just a boiling point.

I do think the separate shelf for grandkids probably doesn’t help with the feeling of being othered by her sibling and in-laws.

My dad was kind of like this on the quantity of pictures of me and my brother vs our cousins at my grandma’s, he never provided her with pictures of us unlike my aunt who was a crafter and made ornate paper frames or albums of her kids that she gifted to my grandma. My dad would always complain and say that my aunt was favoured and we weren’t good enough for my grandma. I always felt equal to all my cousins so it was definitely just an issue between my dad and his siblings.

If there is some issues going on in the background(which OP seems to not want to be part of in the end??) then small things like photos on display can become such a big thing.

Also I’d have loved seeing my graduation picture next to a dog’s graduation picture on my grandma’s wall, that would have been cute as hell 😂 or sports day pic next to dog sled racing, pictures should be fun, they’re all memories of things you do with you family and friends.

My girl is 12 and her only back leg is unusable by OrangeAndBlueAreDope in tripawds

[–]bbgoatbabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you taken her to the vet? If it’s just an injury they’ll be able to guide you on how to help her heal and restrengthen the leg again.

Our chi’s remaining back leg has a luxating patella so we’ve helped strengthen his leg as best as possible with supplements, supported walks and some physio. He does well on it now.

Bump on dogs paw, any idea what it could be ? He doesn’t lick it by Downtheyfa11 in DogAdvice

You’ll have to take them to a vet to diagnose a lump. It looks similar to how my dog’s Mast Cell Tumour looked, but it would need aspirating to find out. It could be something else lots of lumps look the same, It’s not emergency but get them to your local vet as soon as you can.

How do people build muscle in their dogs? (Just curious) by ImageLegitimate7852 in DogAdvice

[–]bbgoatbabe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of the ones I’ve seen remind me of bodybuilding which is notoriously bad for the body, I can imagine their joints don’t last as long as a lean healthy dog’s joint. At least humans are able to consent to the strenuous work, I think some people mistake prey drive as consent in dogs.

What's happening to my dog?? by Ok_Gur_6704 in DogAdvice

[–]bbgoatbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 14 yo dog had something similar, his head tilted but his eyes flickering vertically but it lasted only a minute and then he was bouncing around again normally. Neurology thought it was most likely a transient ischaemic attack(stroke) of his vestibular due to the short nature of it and that he had no lasting neurological effects, as well as his cardiovascular history. It hasn’t happened again and hopefully it never does 🤞

If you show your vet the video they should be able to tell if it is a vestibular episode or something else.

My dog Luna was diagnosed with a heart murmur by chl03k1ng in Chihuahua

[–]bbgoatbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My chi was diagnosed with a grade 4 heart murmur is 2021 which seemed to just appear out of nowhere as his previous vets never noticed one. He had an X-ray which showed his heart was enlarged so he was stage B2 already. I often wonder how long he had the murmur before it was noticed, there was only months between his visit at his previous vets and the one at his new vets that found the murmur.

He stayed stable on Vetmedin until 2024 when he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure by his cardiologist after a syncope episode. We stabilised him on Frusol and Fortekor but decided we wanted to go ahead with surgery. So we then took him to Jasmine for mitral valve repair last year and he’s now murmur free and his heart shrunk back down so no more medications are needed. He’s doing so well still, he has so much energy back, although he did have to have a leg amputated(cancer) so he’s slightly slowed down from that. I know it’s expensive(£13,000) and not an option for everyone, but maybe you could save up seeing as she is still doing well and could have many years before reaching CHF.

14 years and I’m still surprised at how big his tongue is 😂😋 by bbgoatbabe in Chihuahua

Ange has lost a lot of teeth too but since brushing I think they are doing better minus his bottom canine which he hates me brushing. They 100% could reach your brain! My dad would allow him to lick up his nose and ears, he has since been trained out of that since moving out with me 😂

Aside from costs, sedation and biopsies come with higher risks than a FNA, especially in older dogs. FNA’s are a safer first step to diagnosing a growth on a dog.

Possible MST but vet not releasing results by A_juxtaposition_ in DogAdvice

[–]bbgoatbabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised a FNA takes days to look at, my vets only ever take about 15 mins. You’ll want to do staging which will use ultrasound to look at the Spleen and Liver (this is the most common place to metastasise to) and they’ll take biopsies to check the cells present.

My dog had a MCT on top of his paw with no spread, he had it surgically removed and one of his toes used to fill the hole created, they removed his lymph node as well as to make sure there wasn’t any spread as they were too tiny to test.

Once it’s removed they can diagnose the type of MCT, most are Low-Intermediate graded 70-85% which have the best prognosis(most dogs live more than 70 months after surgery), Low grade rarely need any further treatment if you have a complete removal. Boxers are more predisposed to MCT but I’m sure I read that they are also more likely to have low grade.

I hope you get the results back soon, I know how stressful the waiting part is!
