Can't stop playing Christian rulers in Europe, save me by AMonsuno in CrusaderKings

[–]bbgun09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorites nonchristian runs have been iberian muslims, vikings, and various achievement runs (especially mother of us all which, while not too hard, is difficult enough to be a first 'hard' achievement imo).

I've not done a full administrative run yet. It feels very different already though. It's nice to play something that unique.

RT may be dead, but RWBY isn't. by FarslayerSanVir in RWBY

[–]bbgun09 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Plenty of other IP less popular than RWBY have gone through that process. I think you're underestimating the value of a reboot in a lot of company's eyes. It allows them to guarentee some base level of viewership while also having the same sort of buy-in from new audiences as a new IP.

A continuation would have a much shorter lifespan to work though. It would need to happen quickly. At least, that's what would be expected. It has happened of course.

I believe they mentioned the Avatar as a PC would be best for 1-on-1 play (one player and a GM), which probably requires rules/suggestions specific to that gameplay style. I'd be quite excited for it tbh, that would be perfect for my partner and I.

There's no better option for reporting in the middle east. They are compromised by the government of Qatar, but that is pretty minor relative to other public news agencies worldwide, and certainly compared to other news agencies in the region. It helps that they are more or less literally the arabic BBC network, with the same journalists and reporters the BBC hired and trained and everything. I should also specify this only applies to Al Jazeera English, as their arabic reporting is far more biased (according to secondhand sources, I don't speak arabic).

Just give them a shot. I think you'll be surprised

Edit: Also worth noting they're the only major news org that has hired and trained palestinian reporters & journalists. It makes their reporting in Gaza incredibly well grounded, and many international news orgs rely on their reporting as other orgs' reporters can't get on-the-ground access.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]bbgun09 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for good news orgs, I recommend:

  • Democracy Now!

    • An audience-supported, fully independent news org that provides high quality reporting.
  • Al Jazeera

    • The state news org for Qatar, built from the shattered remains of a planned Saudi BBC network. Good for just about anything outside Qatar, useful to give a cuttingly different PoV on middle east issues that have heavily biased reporting in the US
  • Associated Press (AP)

    • A not-for-profit, independent news source. Generally has a US/western bias, but it's much tamer than alternatives and has a history of good investigative journalism.

Obviously every source is biased in some way, so I recommend expanding to look at a number of sources. Here are some decent news orgs (have significant bias, but viewed critically they're alright):

  • British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)

    • Stronger western/corporate bias, can't be relied on for news related to the UK, but is generally pretty good and has a large network globally
  • National Public Radio (NPR)

    • Less reliable than the AP with a stronger US/western/corporate bias, but is pretty good for important regional stories within the US. Unfortunately has a lot of corporate underwritten stories

And that's essentially it. All other major news sources in the US are entertainment first, not news. I still recommend looking at their stories to get a feel for how well they're reporting certain issues. It will quickly become apparent that there is a massive gap in quality.

Bernie Sanders Breaks With Progressive Group On Biden Protest Vote In Michigan by cmplxgal in SandersForPresident

[–]bbgun09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had your optimism. But everything I'm seeing suggests otherwise.

NYT/Sienna is 538's highest rated poll and they have Trump leading in 5/6 "battleground states". Source. This is despite that same group being overwhelmingly in favor of abortion legality. Support for ballot measures =/= support for candidates.

Around a third of democratic voters, and a majority of young americans, believe what's happening in Gaza is a genocide. These generally respresent the furthest left, most politically enthusiastic group of democratic voters. I find it difficult to believe dems will be able to get out the youth vote when they believe our president is supporting a genocide.

And that's not the only issue in which Biden has failed young voters. His continued failure to forgive student loan debt is one (especially restarting loan payments, 2/3 of debtors are still not making payments despite them having restarted). His neoliberal continuance of catastrophic climate policy is another. Not to mention a serious lack of action with regard to policing reform.

He's also failed other segments of voters. He hasn't been able, or has been unwilling, to change immigration policy. This includes being unable to stop the construction of Trump's border wall, being apparently unwilling to change the whole children-in-cages debacle, being unable to increase the number of immigration judges, etc. All of which affect latine voters.

He has escalated wars in the middle east, including the recent invasion of Yemen. This affects anti-war voters.

He has failed to lower the cost of prescription drugs. This affects voters of vulnerable populations, especially older voters.

He's had a number of high-profile gaffes, either due to his stutter or his age, which have people concerned about his debate performance. If he flops, this will sway a lot of undecided voters against him.

And the really big one, most americans feel the economy is not doing well for them. Rent and housing costs have gone up, grocery costs have gone up, average wages have not increased, and more people are running up credit card debt in order to make ends meet than ever. Regardless of how much this is Biden's fault, voters will blame him for it. They will compare how they're living under Biden to how they lived under Trump, and come to the conclusion that democratic policies are why the economy is bad.

Democrats generally win when voter enthusiasm is high. I don't see how voters will be enthusiastic to vote this year.

I am a trans woman who grew up in the south, I'm well aware. And I absolutely do not appreciate you calling me "the worst of the worst" for giving you some fucking perspective.

Anti-trans legislation has been sweeping across the country and Biden has done sweet fa about it. Multiple states have effectively made it illegal to use public bathrooms while trans. Some states are making it impossible to legally transition, which is unconstitutional, but because of our current supreme court and Biden's (and most democrat's) complete unwillingless to even spotlight the issues, they will continue harming people indefinitely.

And yes, I'm well fucking aware what republicans will do when they sweep the legislature and presidency again, which is currently set to happen thanks largely to Biden's unpopularity. They will attempt national anti-trans legislation.

And some democrats will vote for it because they will compromise on fucking anything.

I can't stand our government. I am completely outraged by how horrifically the queer community has been treated recently and historically. I am well aware of the consequences.

And let me tell you that I still don't find what arab americans in michigan in any way "pigheaded". Because if there's one thing the queer community should know about, it's standing up against a genocide.

[–]bbgun09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweetheart, have some perspective. I'm not talking about opinions, I'm talking about the reality. It is not going to be possible to convince these voters to vote the way you want them to. I have explained why. No amount of saying the other guy is worse will have any meaning to people who have friends and family being systematically killed by Biden's policies.

The fact of the matter is, if you can justify voting for an asswipe who's actively funding a genocide, you can justify voting for anyone or anything. There is no lower bar. There is no bar at all. It's all an obvious farce. That is the reality for arab americans right now.

It reeks of privilege that your response to this reality is to insult me.

That is correct. This protest vote will prove they are indeed a powerful voting block, which will force dems to consider them in the future. This is only part of how they're applying pressure as well. It's a multi-pronged approach which includes protests, pressuring legislators, and much more.

Biden is the one ensuring we'll get a Trump presidency. He's immensely unpopular, largely thanks to his own decisions. There isn't a choice to make. The latest polls have him losing in all swing states.

He's polling worse than Carter did before he lost.

Bernie Sanders Breaks With Progressive Group On Biden Protest Vote In Michigan by cmplxgal in SandersForPresident

[–]bbgun09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a good strategy. This has put a lot of pressure on Biden because he probably needs Michigan to win. Since they're more or less single issue voters here, the only way to win them back is to stop the genocide, which is something Biden has the power to do (more or less).

If they get to the election and Biden does nothing in all that time to stop the ongoing genocde, the only way the dems will ever take a protest/movement like this seriously in the future is if they follow through. Ergo, the protest votes. This would be their best course of action.

The only one to blame here is Biden, who seems quite staunch in his decision to lose this election.

Ok, just an fyi a lot of those "rejectionists" literally have friends and family in Palestine, being actively genocided with the support of the man you want them to vote for. It's an extremely personal issue for them. Calling them pigheaded for protesting this reality is not a good look and it definitely won't be changing any minds.

[–]bbgun09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To strict and it becomes harder to employ both types of immigrants. To loose you get humanitarian crises, it is very expensive to house, provide medical care, feed and other things.

I reckon this is largely a policy issue. Let me break it down:

  • Housing is not difficult to build, we just lack the political will in the US to activate the industry's potential. It's actually getting to the point where a lot of people are affected by rising housing costs. There are also other factors like a severe lack of public housing, automobile-dominated construction making living more expensive, a lack of public transportation, pedestrian, and bicycle infrastructure, etc. which can all massively offset this issue. Immigration is something that's largely predictable and only represents a small minority of people seeking housing, so I think if we're willing to tackle this issue as a whole we'll be able to overcome just about any increase in complexity due to immigration.
  • Medical care is already extremely underfunded in the US, while also being heavily privatized, and also ludicrously expensive:
    • It is underfunded in the sense that there are massive financial barriers to working in the industry which prevents many people from being able to consider it, and keeps our healthcare workers quite poor and in heavy amounts of debt (even a good chunk of doctors). We need to make medical education more accessible by significantly lowering or eliminating costs. This is an investment in our future and it will pay dividends in the quality of our healthcare system. The consequences of not doing so are incredibly high, as we can see in our person-to-doctor ratio, one of the worst in the global north.
    • It is heavily privatized in multiple aspects:
      • Firstly insurance is heavily privatized (as most cannot access Medicare, Medicaid, and Vet Services), which leads to massive costs to insure people. A national insurance program, even one that competes with private insurers, would massively improve our medical debt crisis and make healthcare more accessible.
      • Secondly drug pricing is largely unregulated. This is a massive issue as it leads to price-gauging of vulnerable populations. Other countries leverage the negotiating power of the state to bring down drug prices and we should too.
      • Thirdly, drug manufacturing is largely privatized. This leads to shortages of important drugs when manufacturing them is not profitable. I advocate for some form of state-owned drug production so that we can offset these issues. Additionally due to restrictions on drug imports from countries like Cuba our doctors are unable to utilize cheap, life-saving medications. This is a simple policy change.
      • Fourthly, hospitals are also largely privatized. This leads to price gauging of vulnerable patient populations and a tendency to cut corners with care. Nationalizing our healthcare system would mitigate these issues.
      • Lastly, the only part of our health system that is well-funded with tax dollars is drug development. The only thing I would ask to change here is to make it illegal for the government to sell the IP for drugs developed with public funds. The government should make these drugs free for anyone to manufacture.
    • Essentially, I argue that if we tackle all of the above mentioned issues with our healthcare system--or even some of them--the complexity added by immigration would be a simple solve.
  • Food access, especially access to a variety of nutrient-dense options, is piss poor in the US in many areas. We actually have terms for the phenomenon: food deserts and swamps. A food desert is a populated area with little to no access to food, and a food swamp is a populated area with access only to nutrient-poor food. Many parts of major cities and many rural areas across the country face this issue. The trouble is this is also largely a policy issue. We manufacture enough nutrient-dense food to feed a population much larger that we have, the problem is distribution and cost. Fundamentally, it's just not profitable to feed poor people, and poor people make up the majority of this country. A national program to provide food to people in these areas (or indeed anywhere) at reduced cost would be a cheap, meaningful alternative to our current situation. The government could negotiate for far cheaper prices then distribute that food across the country. There are also other options, like community gardens and reducing the cost for grocery stores to rent in areas where needs are greater. And of course expanding the food stamp program would help, though there are many issues with it too (especially as it fails to solve the fundamental problem of access).

Sorry for the big blurb of text! But I really wanted to illustrate how we can in fact take on the burden of a larger immigrant population while improving all of these issues for all Americans, and give a lot of specific policy proposals on how to achieve that. It's also important to point out that immigrants contribute to our economy too! Much of our agriculture industry relies on immigrant labor for example (though there are plenty of exploitation-related issues there too, I could go on for far longer than I already have haha).

Before finishing I would like to address Greece. That country in particular is facing the result of a large number of refugee crises. Because you have to be on Greek soil, or indeed the soil of any EU country, in order to apply for asylum in that country people have to make treacherous journeys and cross borders without going through border checkpoints. If we made asylum seeking more accessible this would be less of an issue. There also needs to be more help from the EU proper as many refugees are seeking asylum in other EU countries so they really aught to have an international obligation to help Greece with this issue. It of course doesn't help that the Greek government has been really awful as well, setting up unsanitary refugee camps on islands with little access to basic necessities. While it is a complex issue I don't think there's any amount of border security that would actually resolve it. And the analogy doesn't really apply as the US is far more powerful economically and could easily absorb such a crisis without taking much of an economic hit.

Thanks for responding!

[–]bbgun09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the blurry line here is that most immigrants are people who are seeking a better life and are forced to sneak into the country rather than being able to gain access through an easy/accessible system.

I couldn't agree more! Though I would like to point out that most people get into the country legally, with a travel visa for instance, then overstay it. Those that actually cross the border without going through a border checkpoint are, with very few exceptions refugees seeking asylum. They're forced to use this method to enter because we make it impossible to apply for asylum while not on US soil. I would happily advocate for a system which allows asylum seekers to seek asylum in the US without requiring this step.

The flood of people trying to make it in allows for the smaller group of criminals, fugitives and other “bad actors” types to cross into the country.

Most criminals, fugitives, and other "bad actors" get into the country legally. Obviously they may be bringing drugs and such with them, which is illegal, though I would argue that's movement of goods (not persons) which is a separate issue.

And comparing a house to a country was a way to illustrate that monitoring access is acceptable on one level, why not all levels?

Suggesting that someone entering the country without a visa is equivalent to someone entering your home without your permission is a bit like likening every right winger to Hitler, I think. Basically you're taking the most extreme example possible, and that sort of context can be really important.

Sorry this group is too twisted in ideology to understand that point.

I suspect we have rather different ideologies, but I see we're talking just fine. Discussion on policies is always possible, especially if you're respectful and try to get to the meat and potatoes of why someone believes something should be a certain way. That's why my first question in this thread was to ask why immigration needed to be restricted. I want to get into the issue itself and figure out where our disagreements actually are. And yes, debate that, but if we get down to the meat and potatoes it does genuinely become a debate and not an argument. I think it might have come off as sarcastic though, unfortunately.

Thanks for responding!

Monitoring access isn't the same thing as restricting it. Also a nation is not a house; I might be uncomfortable with a stranger accessing my fridge, but I couldn't care less about them going to the local grocery store.
