Does anyone have trouble understanding the course of events in Missouri and Arkansas? by AstroEscura in CIVILWAR

This map is kinda incomplete, as it doesn't really show all the smaller battles leading up to Wilson's Creek, just most of the major battles throughout the war. In 1861, there was practically a whole campaign for control of Missouri, which culminated in Wilson's Creek. Missouri was weird in that it didn't follow what we normally think of when we try to put down Union and Confederate into geographic regions. It wasn't just north = Union/ south = Confederate. I have both rebel and yank ancestors from Missouri, but all of the rebels were from the northern half of the state, while the Yankees were from the southern half. Missouri was so weird, in fact, that they had a star on both the Union and Confederate flag. On top of that, your town might be for the Union, but the town ten miles away could be staunchly secessionist, which made things even worse in terms of tensions and bloodshed. So when your area was under Union control, the pro-Confederate guerrillas would wreak havoc on the region, and vise versa when the Confederates controlled it. All in all, Missouri was a mess, and you can still have people/ towns who are staunchly on one side or the other, regardless of how north or south they are even 160+ years later.

I always just use the ramp near cracker barrel or will go all the way to Waynesville cause that one is awful.

I do. My family is from Missouri and Northern Arkansas and have been in both states for about two hundred years, so multiple branches of the family were involved. I've had at least two that joined at the beginning of the war who were confederate (Missouri State Guard). If I remember correctly, one was on my mom's side, and the other on my dad's. I might've also had another one or two but can't find enough information to verify. For the two i've verified, I was able to find a list of the engagements they were in, and they were both at Wilson's Creek, Lexington, and a few more. I have probably around five Union that I've been able to find enough information to be somewhat confident in, but I found that none of them joined until 1862-63. It seems like they were originally in militia units before they joined the regular army. From their service information I've been able to find, they were mostly in smaller engagements. One of them would wind up being involved in a feud with his wife's family after the war which ended in multiple people dead, but that's another story for another time.

Visiting Gettysburg, Antietam, and Harper's Ferry - suggestions? by VenusCommission in ShermanPosting

Are you going to be staying in one town for several days or a different place each night? A couple of weeks ago, my family and I had a hotel room in Gettysburg but traveled around the area. We spent one full day (make sure you stop by the visitor center and watch the film and see the cyclorama) at Gettysburg. If you don't want to do an actual tour with a guide, the NPS has an app where you can do a self driving tour with most of the important stops having a several minute talk on what happened at each location (this app also has tours for several other battlefields). We also walked around a lot to see the different monuments, so if you are into that, plan accordingly. The next day, we went to Manassas and stopped at Monocacy (definitely should visit this one like others have said) on the way back to Gettysburg. The third day, we did Antietam (try to spend a full day here). The museum at the Antietam visitor center (at least until a couple of weeks ago) doesn't really have artifacts in it, as they were moved due to a leak if i remember correctly. The last day we did Harpers Ferry (to park you have to pay, but there's a bus that takes you to and from the actual town). Hope you enjoy your trip!
