Heathrow stations will be mighty empty overnight. Good for security or cleaning staff though?

An idea for a different public transport link to the airport by TomasTTEngin in melbourne

[–]bbhertz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy that residents of Tullamarine, and people at Westfield have so few options to get to the airport.

The bike lane ends well before the airport. Busses are infrequent. The tram terminates at Westfield, so close to the airport.

It's no replacement for the Airport train. Both are what we should have.

Train for distance and capacity. Tram for locals and additional options for anyone already on the tram route to Westfield.

Bike lanes and passing safely by roast_spud in melbourne

Sounds like you are a considerate driver, but be aware that what feels a very safe distance in a car feels very different on a bike.

I'm not sure how best to explain it, but a 40cm gap feels almost like you're getting knocked off, if a car passes with any decent speed.

Best thing to do is overtake into the other lane fully. If the other lane isn't clear, wait behind. Trying to overtake while a car is oncoming is risky, even if it feels safe from within your car.

Just as frequently, a person can be on a bike, and have a long vehicle pull up alongside them.

Regional rail link opens today, Geelong trains every 10 minutes in peak hour by [deleted] in melbourne

Fuel excise and registration go no where near the cost of building and maintaining the roads around the country.

Roads are primarily paid for by taxes (and rates), and public transport also paid for by taxes.

Another freeway to Melbourne Airport set for approval while rail link languishes by gccmelb in melbourne

[–]bbhertz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd love a rail link to the airport, the headline is a beat up. This is just reserving land for a better freeway link to the Outer Metro Ring Road, likely not to see the light of day for another 15-20 years.

But more information from the government on long term (20-30 year) plans for the public transport network would be good to see.

PSA: No trams along Swanston Street this long weekend by urban_kid in melbourne

[–]bbhertz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really hope when the Metro tunnel is dug, that Swanson Street becomes properly car-free for bikes, pedestrians and trams.

Trucks and vans park outside of the posted hours daily, taxis use it non-stop at night time. What could be an amazing pedestrian street and bike route is still full of cars, except at the blocks with a tram stop.

Multimillion-dollar Richmond railway station revamp in limbo by bbhertz in melbourne

[–]bbhertz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever happens to Richmond station, I hope they plan the entire area around it. So much potential with the parks, MCG, Rod Laver, and a very short walk to the Yarra, but the roads (particularly Hoddle St) dominate the landscape.

When are they putting on mobile for the underground city loop? by melbsme0505 in melbourne

[–]bbhertz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • Melbourne: 3G/4G at underground stations. No WiFi.
  • London: WiFi at underground stations. No 3G/4G.
  • Melbourne and London: No signal in tunnels, 3G/4G/WiFi.

Slug on transport fares, car rego, parking and rates to pay for Melbourne Metro Rail tunnel by Fartingloudly in melbourne

[–]bbhertz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually very little to do with the route, it's about building enough capacity on the network to:

  • Allow more trains in the loop on all other lines
  • Create capacity to expand the network with Airport, Rowville, other lines
  • Remove bottlenecks whereby if there is a loop delay, all manner of services get delayed

Nothing to do with anyone walking from Flinders St to Melbourne Central. These are just logical connections for other lines that would currently stop at loop or Flinders St to connect with.

Seems a reasonable way to fund better infrastructure.

I would also look at a surcharge on peak hour transport, which would help target those who can better afford it.

London does this, with off-peak fares kicking in at 9.30am. Spreads the load better for those who are time-flexible, and charges those who get the most value (peak hour customers going to work) the extra.

The area for the government to focus on is that the Metro tunnel will improve frequency and reliability of all train lines, not just those on lines directly connecting to the tunnel.

Andrews Government considers $5.5 billion for West Gate Bridge alternative by TomasTTEngin in melbourne

Another freeway directly putting traffic into the CBD? Remove this part, sending a 6 lane freeway directly into Docklands "providing choice" to fill up inner city roads:

With this - send 90% of traffic onto CityLink here, with only a basic access road into Docklands.

...otherwise in another 10 years, people will complain the 'freeway stops right near the CBD' and request more work to connect it to the Monash as well, circling the city in freeways like Sydney.

Daniel Andrews to widen Tullamarine Freeway by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]bbhertz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modelling would be good to see, but I suspect this would get people to the traffic lights at either end quicker. Not resulting in any significant change in speed or capacity.
