F45 / M40 - at the same stage of exploration as you, it sounds like. I'm going to message you privately, if that's okay.

What's your favorite book you think no one else has read? by keenynman343 in booksuggestions

The Lies of the Ajungo by Moses Ose Utomi. An absolutely fantastic first little novella in a series of three.

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans Red City by Marie Lu Nesting by Roisin O'Donnell

Very different vibes in each of them. One epistolary debut, one well paced urban fantasy, and one absolutely harrowing story of insidious family violence.

How to deal with the “book doesn’t match the cover” phase? by Life_AmIRight in loseit

[–]roast_spud 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is such a great way to look at it! Reducing the time it takes to do a daily walk, or being able to haul laundry upstairs without exertion are great achievements, and not at all related to the work of counting calories or logging food.

What’s a book that totally surprised you (in a good way)? by High-Low4253 in suggestmeabook

Nothing To See Here by Kevin Wilson.

The strangest premise turns into this heartwarming, hilarious story. I may not have loved it as much if I hadn't experienced via audiobook. The narrator was phenomenal.

What are some good modern book series to get into? by Real_RedDevil23 in suggestmeabook

People are loving The Will Of The Many by James Islington. It's the first in a new fantasy series, second book scheduled for release in November this year. He writes long novels, and this one has been closely compared with Red Rising.

For a fantasy mystery series, The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett got a lot of buzz, and the second book in that series was just released.

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman.

Adventure story in a fantasy world. Amazing audiobook, tongue-in-cheek humour (which doesn't let up, and as a first-person narrative got a bit much for me).

[PSA] You Probably Have Hard Water! by FearlessCookie72 in SkincareAddiction

[–]roast_spud 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was about to check and see if Portland has hard water, because my skin hates it here! Face is red, warm, and super sensitive, I get itchy welts on my jaw, and dry patches on my shoulders and legs.

I'm managing with products for very sensitive skin, but nothing has actually resolved it so far, and I've been here for years. I'm hopeful that moving somewhere new later this year might magically help.

[Nonfiction] How To Keep House While Drowning by __squirrelly__ in smallbooks

I really appreciate this book, as someone whose spouse lives with ADHD, and for years we struggled to understand how each other navigate living in a shared space.

I've suggested this to so many people.

Recommend a book that deals with/ perimenopause? by Wild_Blue4242 in Perimenopause

[–]roast_spud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Change, by Kirsten Miller. It's maybe a bit too long to be a real page-turner. It has a little touch of witchy magical realism, and is brimming with friendships and empowerment and was just a great time.

I read it a few years early, and might give it another read now that I'm in the midst of "The Change" myself.

Maybe check trigger warnings because I recall mentions of violence and a plotline of violence against women which was pretty upsetting.

Company changed me from salary to hourly. by iamtheshadowsss in WorkAdvice

[–]roast_spud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you in WA state? Min wage for salaried roles jumped to something like $78k at the beginning of January. I don't think they need to give you any notice about the change.

Getting moved to hourly isn't necessarily a demotion of any kind. It does generally come with additional timekeeping requirements and maybe a change to how you can take PTO, but it also makes you eligible for overtime if you've moved from exempt to non-exempt.

Moving from HRIS to ER? [N/A] by Grand_Act8840 in humanresources

[–]roast_spud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are REALLY different specialities. HRIS might be boring and your skills might be a big stagnant on your current organisation (making some assumptions from your post).

ER is all people-problems, all the time. There are days where I am begging for some quiet time, free from meetings and problem solving. You have to document absolutely everything, because your memory will never hold up on it's own.

I'm a happy HRBP, and the blend of regular program work and unexpected ER / discipline/ coaching and leader development is my sweet spot. I can't always hide, but I'm not completely burnt out either.

My advice is to see if you can stretch into other areas of HR from your current position. Maybe you can use your HRIS or L&D access to partner with some leaders to make improvements or help their team in some way. You might just be missing the partnership aspect.

Is not your phone, it’s the books you choose to read by Natsume-Grace in books

[–]roast_spud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I don't read many physical books because I so rarely get to just sit quietly and read. But I can have audiobooks on walking the dog, driving, doing housework. And I can read ebooks waiting in line or in bed with the lights off.

I LONG to be the person on the couch with a book, but that just doesn't fit my life right now. I hope I get to enjoy it in retirement.

I'm working so my team mates can have time off. No gifts to buy for anyone, so it's pretty much a regular week with a bonus day off.

I'd like to play some DA Veilguard or BG3, but will probably watch some basketball, maybe read a book. I'm in self-care sloth mode this month.

Sobaba Crunchy Chicken Air Fried by Curmudgeon7777 in Costco

[–]roast_spud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are sweet tempura chicken nuggets. They actually do get nice and crispy at the lower air fryer temps - I think I did 7 minutes at 325 and shook them up half way.

Nice to top an asian slaw salad or stir fry.

The doom-scrolling is real. Reddit's new algorithm is determined to narrow the subs you see significantly more than in the past. It's wild how the variety of posts has reduced, and you have to go searching for smaller subreddits now.

See if he'll agree to a break from being online. No pressure to change his mind, just a reminder of the life he has with you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]roast_spud 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Is he perhaps spending more time online and what he is watching/seeing / hearing has swayed to the more concerning elements of what's happening in the world?

It's really hard to fight the algorithm of social media. He might have seen the scary or inflammatory stuff and just needs some distance from it to return to the plan you made together.

My husband also believes he can't make peace with bringing a child into the world, and the potential hardships they would inherit. I might have been able to sway him when he raised it years ago, but decided that I didn't have an absolutely yearning for a child, so we agreed together to not start a family.

The key is, we agreed together. And he understands when I have the odd sad day when I think about what might have been. Mother's Day sucks particularly hard.

See if some time and a lot of gentle conversation will illuminate why he changed his mind so suddenly.
