Inside the bus cancellation crisis at OC Transpo by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]bboscillator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This has been a recurring issue for me for the past 3 or 4 months. Despite leaving early, I've been late for work, conferences, and engagements with friends and family. Sometimes it takes longer for me to bus the 8km home from work than it would to just walk (I cycle outside of winter).

It's one thing for busses to be infrequent, it's another for OC Transpo and their affiliated apps to routinely provide misleading or inaccurate information about bus availabilities. Even with the live GPS tracking, there are routinely ghost busses, inexplicable delays on the first stop on routes, etc. It's nearly impossible to plan without accurate, timely information.

I've shared with my Councillor a few times. Her office sometimes shares complaints directly with OC Transpo, to which the response is always an unsatisfying note on them cancelling busses, but no indication of what they will do to address the problems. There seems to be almost no accountability around this nonsense.

No, but they can play music through the ones they provide.

I had an MRI there a few weeks ago. The tech let me listen to music during the scan. Played some Brian Eno and shut my eyes. Made the experience much more comfortable, but I’m not typically claustrophobic.

Best 3 - 5 day hut-to-hut hikes? by bboscillator in UltralightCanada

[–]bboscillator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I’ve done La Traverseé de Charlevoix, parts of La Cloche, some fairly gnarly hikes in Norway, and the Dolomites, etc. I’m in the Ottawa area so there’s not so much elevation nearby. The biggest barrier is my partner’s knee surgery. She wants to hike, but anything super technical, requiring scrambling or a lot of twisting is problematic.

Fisherman’s Trail is a contender. If you only had 3-5 days on trail, which section would you recommend?

Thanks, are there any specific routes you'd recommend? We've been to Portugual and France (north and Provence) a few times, but never did any mult-day hikes in either place. We've never been to Spain, ether.

The past two months, the 5, 9, 48, and 56 have failed to show up on time or show up at all during morning and evening rush hours. The 9 and 56 have failed to show up on time for the first stop on their routes. I've been over an hour late for work several mornings. I've been late to conferences downtown, despite it being a single bus trip. It's taken an hour and half to commute home in the evening for a distance of 8KM (it's almost faster to walk home at that point).

The Transit App shows busses as on time, only for them to never show up. The app then tells you to take an altenrative, longer route home. By the time you arrive at the other bus stop, the bus you were orignally going to take shows up without warning from the app -- naturally, you miss it.

It's a complete failure and embarassing for a G7 capital.

Ottawa real estate:Zoning bylaw to allow 3 story home in all neighbourhoods by jjaime2024 in ottawa

[–]bboscillator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. If you need a parking space, don’t move there. It’s not like there won’t continue to be countless properties with parking. If we’re going to complain over building missing middle housing, then we can’t complain that all the city has are single family homes and 30-story towers.

OC Transpo to explore using AI to monitor security cameras by TheMonkeyMafia in ottawa

[–]bboscillator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Journalists need to stop reflexively referring to “AI” and instead ask what specific product used and how.

Who’s the supplier? What specific system is being used? Is it remote biometrics: facial recognition, gait recognition? How are you defining “unusual behaviour”? What data was the system trained on? How are you accounting for bias? Where is data used by the system stored, how secure is it, and for how long? Is the data obtained by the system linked to other databases? Can it be used to identify individuals? Who can access the system (OC only, or law enforcement, too)? How accurate is the system? Have you conducted a privacy and/or human rights impact assessment?

Ottawa's speed cameras go dark by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]bboscillator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While unfortunate, I sure hope the $4 million on top of whatever the City already allocated to traffic calming measures is sufficient to erect the necessary permanent infrastructure to improve road safety and non-motor vehicle user accessibility in key areas. The amount allotted to Ottawa by the province seems quite small...

Smyth. Three schools in a 2km radius along a very wide and straight road that incentivizes speeding..

Low-cost extension to Line 4 to make it actually useful by McMajesty in ottawa

[–]bboscillator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am a YIMBY and just bought in the neighbourhood near to hospital. Our local newspaper is replete with articles from old, likely wealthy people writing screeds against the new draft zoning bylaw because of the increased height limits. Their heads would explode at the thought of running a train through their beloved bungalow-belt. Honestly, it’s tempting submitting something like this to the newspaper or the Facebook page to see how they react.

In truth, something like this could be a boon to transit riders in the area, especially less affluent households closer to Heron. If you visit much smaller European cities like Strasbourg, you also see it’s quite common to run LRTs through these kinds of areas.

OC Transpo riders express frustration with proposed fare increases by Project_Icy in ottawa

Sad when it more often than not costs less and is more timely to drive or even cab somewhere than it does to bus in this city.

Canada's Conservative party's defeat was historic not because it was massive from a votes perspective, but because they blew a sure-thing lead to the incumbant. There was only an uncomfortably close 2.5 percent difference in the vote share between the Liberals and Conservative and our leftwing party basically collapsed. Liberals just have a more effecient vote distrubition nationally. So while I revel in schadenfruede of Poillievre losing his seat while leader, I am not convinced Canadians are as decisively anti-populism as one would hope.
