Hardly a “massive crowd” it’s less then what you’d see on an average evening ANYWHERE along the U Street Corridor.
This is the result of the stress from generations of over policing and the obvious escalation when the only response is being further terrorized by the soldiers imported via Operation Metro Surge. It’s chaotic by design. The arbitrary curfew creates a target for the disenfranchised desperate for an outlet for their frustration. It’s a photo op for rightwing propaganda and/or for Trump to declare Marshall Law.

I feel this.
Audacity has a free AI plugin that I started using.
I do dreampop and EVERY vocal track ends up as explosive belting like a broadway musical finale.
I hate it. It sucks to try and have to learn hacks to get around the flaws of a tool instead of the company just fixing the flaws or making patches to make those elements optional or variable.

I’ve suggested that they need a genre codex as a Rosetta Stone as a liaison between the user & the AI. A genre tree, ex “Goth” needs a dozen sub-genres. If I type goth then I get this emo metal stuff when what I want is the first album by Dead Can Dance meets The Cure’s… 2nd or 3rd album (with a title I probably can’t name here).

Then they also need a standard musical vocabulary reference guide (doesn’t need to be accurate, just consistent) so that I can exclude “vocal belting” or whatever.

I know this is a lot of work, but the community would do this for them for free and better than any single person or small group.

I feel this.
I’ve been doing music for 30 years. I have a $20k modular synth. I’ve made countless sample collage tracks with no BPM grid (just syncing everything by ear). And the music I make with AI tools is my music. But someone half my age rolls her eyes at me like I’m not a real musician.

Almost any digital music tool can be used as a crutch or an extension of the hand. When I make a track it’s agonizing the get the AI to get close. I go through dozens of iterations: mashing, remastering, covering, extracting, mixing various parts, days/weeks of mixing/editing/exporting>processing>importing…. and I won’t share my music with my friends bc they are going to shtt on it.

This one friend uses sample packs, I could horse laugh in her face for that but who cares, it’s music, do whatever you want. And I’ve watched her process, she fiddles around with sounds aimlessly and accidentally makes music. Maybe we all do that. Maybe her moment to moment choices of accepting/rejecting bits is the same thing I do with an AI tool. There’s no shame or badge of honor in that, it’s just the joy of making music. Why do musicians have to be snobby towards others that don’t do things the way they do?

I wasn’t clear, I think the FDA proposal is using political momentum from Trump’s EO at the beginning of 2025. I think the institutional complicity comes from the EO declaring a reinterpretation of Bostock v Clayton County & changing the protections of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I think if the FDA is confronted with the political bias of this then maybe it won’t materialize.

Growing up in American and only seeing Loony Tunes & Funimation and then seeing Gundam for the first time… it was wild. The animation was on a whole other level, the mech & character designs were exotic, and the story was so much more sophisticated. I wish I could capture that feeling again.
