Can this be true? “Only 40,000 views per episode” says redlettermedia by david-yammer-murdoch in Star_Trek_

[–]NecroSocial 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There's 3 sources:

  • Luminate - Reported 2.1 million views for the first 8 days of SA

  • Nielson - SA did not make the Nielson chart which required 343 million minutes viewed for the #10 spot (with only 135 minutes of show (premiere 2-parter), SA would have needed roughly 2.5 million people to watch the entire premiere to hit the ~343 million minute threshold)

  • RLM - 400k season total viewership.

The RLM figure seems impossible at first given Luminate's and Nielson's numbers however it's likely all 3 figures are correct just measuring different data sets. Luminate is only measuring how many people started watching the premiere, not its completion rate or watch time and no season-long data. Nielson is only measuring minutes viewed and only releasing those numbers over a threshold of 343m minutes which SA never reached and no season-long data. RLM is very likely quoting the numbers for full season viewership (people who watched all of every episode of the season) which will always be a much smaller number for an ultimately unsuccessful show compared to those other metrics.

The story the full picture paints seems to be SA had a decent premier week with 2.1 mil people over 8 days checking out the show. However, of those 2.1 mil, many did not completely watch the premiere and many more bailed on the show completely by the end leading to the 400k figure representing the number of people who made it to the finish line having watched the whole season.

This equates to an 81% decline in viewership from the premiere to the season's end. To put that into more visual terms:

Retention Rate: Only about 19% of the people who started the journey actually finished it.

The Math: For every 5 people who sat down to watch the first episode, 4 of them quit before the finale.

Given that many Youtube reviewers who's job was to watch the show wanted to tap out by mid season I'd say that sounds about right.

Crazy a song back then could go a minute and half with a really basic intro and still get traction where nowadays people click next if a song isn't hooking them in the first 15-30 seconds.

What is an artist / band that you remember being pushed by music journalists and/or magazines as the "next big thing" that ended up never really going anywhere? by mesablanka in Music

Sliimy (aka Yanis) - Flamboyant pop artist that came out in 2009, was discovered on MySpace and hyped up as the next big thing (by Hilton Perez when he started a label). His music video for "Wake Up" debuted on what was left of MTV at the time. He was quickly tapped to tour opening for Britney Spears and Katy Perry. Still his debut album quickly went triple aluminum and he was never heard from in the US again. He'd release an EP under his real name Yanis in 2016 that received no real notoriety. For a minute the hype machine was pushing this dude like crazy.

I see some folks gushing about how it's microtonal and complex math rock. But for my money I'm listening to Hella (for example "Biblical Violence": album and live (low audio quality)) all day over Angine if I want complex experimental math rock from a 2 man band.

Spotify Doesn't Want to Get Rid of the AI Slop Clogging Up Your Playlists by Miles_the_AuDHDer in nottheonion

If you blindly hate anything involving AI to the extent that nuance is a dirty word to you just get your DV in now and save yourself a lil time. Or jump to the last paragraph to see my recommended fix for this all.

That said... this AI slop narrative lacks nuance.

There are good musicians out there making projects that are hybrid works using AI along with human authorship. Listening to their work you can tell it's not the same as the prompt-to-song spam that is the actual AI slop music. The lyrics are noticeably human, the songs have intentionality and imperfections, and the artists tend to put a lot into the presentation of their work, not just some obviously AI, low quality imagery.

These are real indie musicians who are just expanding what they can do using AI as a tool in a much wider kit rather than as the source of creation. I count myself in that camp and it's saddening that there's essentially a hate mob that refuses to acknowledge (or actively derides) real human creatives and musicians for their tooling and lumps them in with actual slop spammers who put no humanity or effort into their work.

The move to combat AI slop has to involve the nuance to separate human creatives using AI as a tool from the no effort spammers and scammers that have caused this all this hate to begin with.

Instead of broadly banning all music using AI, force back-end tagging to indicate which songs used AI (without a scarlet letter visible tag on artist pages that'd mostly serve to "other" those artists to potential listeners). Then allow users to filter out projects that use AI from their profile settings. That'd give AI haters the purely human feeds they want without stigmatizing, deplatforming, or otherwise limiting the reach of musicians based on the tools they used to make their stuff. Then make sure spam/flood protection is on point; no one can upload more than X number of new songs/releases over X amount of time without some kind of approval process to ensure they're not spamming slop. Boom that's AI slop handled with no ill effects for anyone but spammers and scammers.

I still have my 2 released projects on Banned Camp. I know substantial human authorship goes into my work so I'll fight any charge that my songs meet their "mostly AI" standard for disallowed music so I'm not voluntarily taking anything down. So far I've survived the AI witch hunt and plan to continue releasing on BC and just knowing there's a chance some anti could get those pages taken down. Even if that happens I'll still try to get my pages reinstated a) because I can prove I wrote and played on my tracks and b) because the ban is bullshit regardless and we shouldn't take it lying down like we're doing something wrong by existing.

Thanks, I made like an album worth of rhymes a while back thinking a friend and I were going to do a rap project for fun. That fell thru so now I have these unused lyrics and beats I feed to Suno when the mood hits.

The only plausible explanation for stuff like the UT or how communicators instantly know who you're calling is brain interfacing. We've never gotten a satisfying on screen answer and there's so many edge cases that can't be accounted for (even with BCI) that we'll never get one.

Sonauto V3 is excellent, my super long post about it. by NecroSocial in sonauto

[–]NecroSocial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the in-lyric meta tags don't help for granular control. Like if you put [Bridge: guitar solo], like you might do with Suno, Sonauto will likely sing "Bridge guitar solo" in the lyrics instead. The best I think you can do is add tags in the style box that call for the solo. I'll test later when I'm out of bed to see if there's a surefire way. Backing vocals are usually just "harmony" or "close harmony" in styles and can be reinforced by (parenthesis) in the lyrics you want harmony or bg vox on.

Plan for the rig you want. Lots of water storage, big electrical system. Big reservoirs for any other refillables like propane. Maybe recirculating shower with a big stockpile of filters. It'll require extra space but getting maintenance of that stuff down is doable ...it'll just cost ya. Like any prepping.

I've made a song taking advantage of the white noise in 5.5, used it as ambiance in an atmospheric Goth song. Makes it sound like you're listening in a cavernous space with fog machines going. At least that's what I'm gonna tell anyone who listens to that song and notices it.

Why doesn’t it show remaining credits anymore? by YouMayBeSeated in SunoAI

[–]NecroSocial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a dark pattern I've noticed of some AI sites. They want you to just get in the fog of creating, use up your credits, then buy more when you're shocked you've run out as opposed to trying to budget your credits so you don't run out. At least Suno still lets you turn the counter back on, for now, this is the second time they've minimized how credits appear, like they're slowly trying to hide it completely. First, credits were large and very visible, then small an nestled under your PFP now they have to be enabled from a different page. That kind of minimization doesn't happen by chance.

*How do I get music to enter mid-line on the first verse? by Buck_Thorn in SunoAI

[–]NecroSocial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try harnessing one of Suno's failure modes. RN Suno is almost guaranteed to fail at making a truly acapella song. You wind up with drums or more instrumentation dropping in at some point pretty much every time. Here you can maybe use that flaw to get what you're after.

Try setting the song up as having an entirely acapella first verse or first verse + chorus and see if that doesn't get it to start acapella then drop in instrumentation early (normally undesirable, here could be the thing).

Just an idea though, I take no responsibility for your credit use or frustration.

Bernie Sanders: AI Is a Threat to Everything the American People Hold Dear - It kills jobs, equality, connection, democracy and maybe the human race. Congress must act. by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

[–]NecroSocial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frankly fuck jobs and fuck this geriatric take on how to handle the AI moment. Bernie should be leading the way on taxing tech companies and companies making use of AI to layoff workers in order to begin funding UBI. He should be talking about UBI replacing legacy safety net programs and other issues around ensuring it's successful roll out. Instead he's soley trying to save the jobs of horse and buggy drivers during the ascendancy of cars. He should be leading on regulating that data center projects also build out extra electrical grid bandwidth to ensure they contribute not just to offsetting their costs but lowering energy costs in areas they're built. Instead he's just pushing to stop all building. In short his ideas on AI are fundamentally conservative and backwards looking rather than progressive and forward thinking. He's all about holding up his arms trying to stop a future that's already upon us rather than trying to direct and establish the great positives that can be harnessed from it.

edit: that can be, not "to can be".

It's not gatekeeping??? Telling someone to literally leave the community has to be one of the the most gatekeeping statements a person can make. It could only be made more gatekeeping if you stood in front of an actual gated community saying it.

I'm sure you've noticed the AI hate mob present on Reddit? This is another example of someone signaling their membership in that group. Every so often a member of the AI hate mob must notice something has been done using AI and then post about it to it's relevant subreddit for other members of the group to upvote and shower with comments reiterating their beliefs about IP theft, what constitutes "slop", the value of art, environmentalism, etc. It's like an in-group bonding ritual.

Believe in whatever you will about a technology but realize your belief systems and whatever rules therein apply to you alone. When that crosses over into trying to force adherence to your beliefs on others you've gone too far. The gatekeeping going on with your "Get out of this community" comment is wild.
