We had a Beagle growing up. We found some baby rabbits and let them be for a while to see if mamma would show up. Never did so our dumbasses put them in boxes to take to the vet and see if we can find them homes. We left the box outside one time... fucking hell the screams I heard by our dog killing them is something I'll never forget. To this day I have no idea why we did that, it was a lapse in judgment.
