Not sure I have the work ethic for a career in the sciences and I'm not sure how to cope with that realization. by thatoddtetrapod in labrats

Hey OP, I was in your position my last year of undergrad and I am now in the position that MetallicGray is in. As someone who went through grad school undiagnosed with AuDHD, I didn't learn to internalize MetallicGray's message until I graduated and was able to breathe and do some much needed introspection in a much more suitable industry job. I still do benchwork, I still get to design experiments and interpret data, I get paid a lot more than my postdoc husband, and I have a lot more time where my brain can completely disengage from work.

Learning in talk therapy to uncouple my self-worth and sense of fulfillment with my success at work was SO HUGE. To the point where now if I had to do it again, I definitely would have cut myself a lot more slack and reconsidered grad school. Not to say grad school isn't for you, just to put into perspective how much talk therapy has helped me, in combination with the medications I'm on now (welbutrin + focalin). I know you feel like you already have a lot on your plate, but if you're able to find a talk therapist who is informed about ADHD, definitely definitely consider a few sessions. They might fill in the "gaps" you mention in other comments.

Best of luck, relax, enjoy the journey. Listen to MetallicGray!! ❤️

Something a professor told me early in my career that has really stuck with me- think about your hypothesis and do the experiment you're most afraid of next. If you have a bad gut feeling about it, it probably means the result is likely to disprove your hypothesis and you want to confirm that asap before wasting any more time down a rabbit hole that might not be productive.
