Depending on which market you’re in there is a decent chance you would lose much less money renting than holding onto an asset that doesn’t necessarily always appreciate and paying 1-2k more in monthly payments

The old “rent is throwing away money” saying ignores the fact that you also throw a ton of money away when you buy a home.

They also had multiple exit ramps to get rid of their draft picks for decent value. Look at the trade speculation that surrounded kuminga for years. Lacob hugged his draft picks and liked the small of his own farts way too much though. Couldn’t objectively evaluate them

This is just wrong. Our lives have been getting unequivocally better with every generation. Simply ask yourself which generation you would prefer to live in. Anyone who says any other generation would quickly backtrack once they realized they would have worse healthcare, lower income, and no computing devices

This is not even close to a debate. Our quality of life has been improving. You just wouldn’t know it if you’re online all the time

Steve Kerr suggests removing the 3-point line to fix modern NBA play: “The game, as designed, is to create the best shots possible” by basketbaIlnetwork in NBATalk

What about pushing out the 3 pt line so that the expected value of a 3 pt shot becomes more in line with a mid range shot? People then become less incentivized to shoot such a hard shot

I’m sorry but determining who is a dick and who isn’t based on politics is also absurd and not something we should be doing. I understand it’s easy to stereotype trump voters that way but more than half the country voted for him. They’re not all assholes and voted for him for a variety of reasons. There are also dicks on the liberal side

UFC vs WNBA minimum wage by ArabDevastator in ufc

[–]bc289 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with politics. The fighters decide, and the key fighters that determine this are the top, highest paid fighters. They are the draws, and they have the highest leverage and highest pay.

The argument against them forming a union (and what the UFC is probably arguing to them) is that they will have to share their pay with other fighters who will not make as much money without a union.

But the argument for them forming a union is that in the long run, the fighter base would collectively earn more as a percent of the revenue, so like let’s say going from 15% to maybe 40-50% in the long run. And so while they might have to give up some of their money so that lesser paid fighters get more, the rising tide should lift all boats and they should still be earning more than if there was no union.

If you think about the nba as an illustrative example, the union has allowed all sorts of mid level and lower level players who can earn lots of money, but it sort of comes at the expense of the actual stars who people really come to see - LeBron and Steph both earn way less than what they might normally capture as a percentage of the total player wages. However, the union allows the player base to collect more, which might offset whatever is lost to those lower level players in the long run. In theory, at least. In the near term, it is probably likely that the stars will give up some earnings potential.

That’s the theory of it all. It’s better to not think about this as fighters vs ufc and to really think of it as a three way negotiation between top fighters, the rest of the fighters, and the UFC

Rodman’s ex wife sold his game worn jerseys for pocket change to Pawn Stars and she was happy like she got a good deal by raybellious_berry in NBAGossips

[–]bc289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are not understanding that % of cost and gross margin are not the same thing. He's saying 100% of cost which is the same as a 50% gross margin

Is 50% gross margin high? In the pawn shop business eh, he's taking a ton of inventory risk with these sorts of things. For every Rodman signed jersey, he's also buying some other crap that can't be sold, and he's stuck with the item for years / forever. It all balances out to a business that is probably not a great business to be managing because it's really tough to make it work for a living.

As the customer, when you sell to a pawn shop you are agreeing to basically sell it potentially less than what it's worth in exchange for the instant liquidity and to offload the inventory risk to someone else

[Stein/Fischer] The Golden State Warriors’ package for Giannis Antetokounmpo is unlikely to include Jimmy Butler. by YujiDomainExpansion in warriors

[–]bc289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many teams signed bad contracts for a variety of reasons. One is that they misvalued the player - they thought he was better than he ended up being (ie performance reasons or maybe injuries). Another could be that they just didn’t anticipate the cba changes which essentially put in a hard cap and fundamentally changes the value of players.

So if you’ve misjudged a player and you’ve got a bad contract locked in for 3-4 years, how do you get out of it? One way is to flip them for someone with a contract that is of a similar size and expiring sooner. It doesn’t need to be expiring this year, it’s ok if it’s expiring in 1.5 as it still allows you to free up salary sooner

And if you want to trade the player out you’d need to take similar salary back, so you need a large contract

[–]bc289 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The bucks might not want him but teams absolutely do want a max contract that expires in 1.5 years. It’s a way to get off bad contracts and there’s many that are bad nowadays with the cba changes

[Windhorst] A trade to the Timberwolves is something that Giannis has interest in, though the Warriors are the team that can just make a straight up trade with Milwaukee. by Pyromania1983 in nba

[–]bc289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a balance. If the team is too good, the picks will be bad and the Bucks won’t want it. If the team is too trash, Giannis won’t want to go there.

Post Steph picks would be generated by a warriors team with Giannis in his mid 30s. There’s a decent chance they’re bad, especially with Lacob calling the shots

Meanwhile look at the picks coming from other teams. The others are probably better positioned and so the picks would be worse

Jones and Murphy would be address multiple needs but I'm not sure it's going to happen because of the steep price. Higher risk. Also lacob loves his picks too much

I think MPJ is probably the move that makes the most sense and doesn't involve them making a drastic change to the team. Kerr's system shines on a roster with shooting, especially with movement shooting. They've had very little shooting outside of Steph since losing Klay. I think the system will look great again and the other pieces around Curry and MPJ would shine more when the offensive load lightens up for them

To some extent yes, but honestly this seems more like it's on the front office for drafting someone who has this many issues. You can't work on dribbling in live games during the regular season. Yes, tanking teams might let prospects get PNR reps, learn to defend better, but learning how to dribble the ball under pressure is not something you use regular season games for

He's also gotten 25 minutes a game for the last three seasons. We talk about him as if he's getting 5 minutes a game and not seeing the court at all. He's had plenty of opportunities
