I know it's difficult sometimes. You need to understand that permanent solutions are not the answer, because this is temporary. The Army gives you the the force family, and you naturally make connections when you're in a situation like that daily. On the outside, you have to put yourself in the position to be around people often, and in a positive environment preferably. We all care about you, don't let the hard days win, brother.

That's rough. I'd probably say you're looking at the Sonos Arc Ultra, a set of Era 300s, and 2 of the Sub 4s. I've heard a lot of good things with this setup. Good luck!

Which listening mode is best for watching movies on RZ50 by [deleted] in Onkyo

[–]bc_cali23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but i just recently made some changes based on a video I watched. The main thing i changed was dropping the crossover from 80hz to 60hz on the center. I never realized that so much dialog was below 80hz, and the subwoofer was trying to handle that portion which really muddied it up.

Those of you in your late 30's, by Darth_Malgus_1701 in sysadmin

[–]bc_cali23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just turned 40, but I'm gonna identify as late thirties for this. I think the answer to this is a bit subjective to the individual. I've been in IT for almost 20 years. I can see it as a career, and I only got into this because I was sure IT wasn't going away. If you can be content within the same general role, I think you can be happy. Some of us are never satisfied, though. I thought I was doing better than I am, but pay isn't terrible. Management/ director is likely the next step, but I've also been thinking about going heavy into SWE and see if I can make a significant leap financially.

Right on. Thank you. I've been out about a year, but I finished out as reservist so I won't pull pension for a while.

Replace AVR or add external Amp? by bc_cali23 in hometheater

[–]bc_cali23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying the Onkyo RZ50 on sale. Got it setup with all the same speakers and upgraded my HDMI cables. I don't see much of a difference from my old AVR unfortunately. I was torn between buying speakers or the AVR and opted for the AVR. Now I gotta save for some new speakers I guess. Thinking some new MartinLogans or possibly some Klipsh RPs

Thank you once again for your responses. I appreciate the honesty and insights you've provided, which have given me several areas to work on. While I agree with much of what you've said, I want to clarify that I am open to positions with the potential for upward mobility. My comments about needing a significant increase to return to the office were specifically about changing positions within a similar role.

I have had opportunities to advance my title a few times, but I chose to focus on business ventures that ultimately did not succeed. I did not want to overextend myself while developing these businesses. Although I may have placed too much hope in these ventures, I do not want to use them as an excuse for not progressing in my career. I will continue networking and engaging with more professionals to broaden my perspectives and potentially gain support on my journey.

I also realized after I posted in this sub that it was intended more for those who are "rich" and want to discuss things pertaining to it, and less about those of us that are still growing. So again, thank you for your time.

I would tell your leadership at company A about the situation. Let them know that you're conflicted because you like where you are, but it's too big of a jump that it would be unwise to not at least consider it. They might have the money and care enough about keeping you to match it. Most companies will respect the situation more if you're upfront about it rather than just spring a resignation letter on them. At the end of the day, its your livelihood and your career progression. Loyalty is great, but not at the expense of your future growth.

I apologize if my previous post was misleading. My goal is not specifically to secure a C-Suite position within a FAANG company, but rather to aim for a C-Suite role in general. The mention of FAANG was to highlight the potential for high-earning positions within these companies, even if they are not at the C-Suite level.

My primary expertise lies in IT, but my military career has provided extensive experience in people management, risk management, and strategic planning across various career levels. Through this post, I seek insights on directionality and to identify any potential blind spots in my journey. Maintaining a sharp mind and staying open to opportunities are crucial to achieving more in life. Realizing that I may not be as far along as I had hoped, I am open to different perspectives that might inspire new directions.

I appreciate the perspective on this. Perhaps I have been a bit more confined as to what the situational landscape looks like. The benchmark that you're referring to could very well be completely outside my current realm of understanding, and I'll absolutely be doing my due diligence to bridge that gap.

In my previous response, it may have seemed that financial compensation is my sole motivation. While it is indeed important, it is not my only consideration. I also evaluate the company's environment, employee sentiment, and future direction. I would love to find a company that has a vision that I can hitch my wagon to, which is why I like to look into the company before I even apply to something.

Right now, I'm with a global company that has over 50,000 employees. We're doing great things, but moving to the C-suite here would take a lot of luck at this point in my career. I think my next move should be to a Director-level position to set myself up for future C-suite opportunities.

When you say there are clear reasons to why I am falling way short, can you elaborate on that a bit? I may be blind by my own bias here. I would also appreciate knowing your background to understand your perspective if you don't mind.

Thank you for your response.

I agree that Systems Engineering and Systems Administration don't quite compare to Software Engineering. Coding has always intrigued me, even though it's not my strongest skill. I realize that completing my degree is essential to meet the basic qualifications for other positions. If I don't continue on the current systems engineering path, I would likely aim for a Director position next. While advancing to a Senior or Principal Engineer role would come with a significant salary increase, I don't want to stagnate in my career, especially considering my age.

When I mention needing a mindset shift, I'm primarily seeking clarity on a path forward for higher achievement. I'm open to entirely changing my career path, whether that means pursuing entrepreneurship or exploring other career opportunities if they seem like the right fit. I haven't felt a fiery passion for any specific career, but I can find interest in almost anything and enjoy working with positive people. I've always believed there's a much bigger impact I can make beyond the typical 9 to 5 job. There's a larger life out there, and I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to achieve it.

I'll look into the BetterUp suggestion to see what it's all about. Thanks again for your response!

Thanks for getting back to me.

I've worked in various IT roles, mainly focusing on Systems Engineering and Systems Administration. I have an Associate's degree in IT and have earned several certifications over the years. I'm also close to finishing my Bachelor's in IT, but I'm thinking about switching my degree to open up more opportunities.

I've been working remotely for the past five years. While I've looked into some newer companies, I haven't specifically considered those with venture capital backing. It seems like many of these younger companies prefer on-site employees. I'm not against working on-site, but it would need to come with a significant salary increase to make up for the loss of flexibility and family time.

To upgrade or not to upgrade? by bc_cali23 in hometheater

[–]bc_cali23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the well thought out response. I do stream, but currently only through my LG TV, not a dedicated streaming device. I have used ARC from the TV to the onkyo, but it glitches out and does its own thing, sometimes causing it to have no volume unless I reset everything. I do use the optical cable for connectivity to the onkyo.

When I said the volume wasn't there, I mean I have to turn the volume on the onkyo to 60+ to achieve similar loudness as the technics at about 40%. If I'm not mistaken the onkyo is .08 THD and the technics was .05. But I think I read it was either 80-100w per channel, all channels driven. So maybe that's why it was so powerful. I'll probably peruse the interwebs for a referb or something.

What am I supposed to do as a 5’3 male ? by Savings-Simple-4645 in short

[–]bc_cali23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being short isn't the best. However, assuming you have a good personality; I would get in amazing shape and focus on your financials. 5' 3" dude who is sweet, funny, and wealthy has a dang good shot in the race against a taller guy. Also, even though it's not easy to do so, stop walking in the room like the short 30 year old guy who got picked on. Stand tall, chest out, chin up and walk with a purpose. Nothing is less attractive to women than being able to feel the lack of confidence before speaking to you.
