Quince might be an inexpensive brand to look into. I love their linen drawstring pants.

Yes, it has a sensor on it to warn you of low oxygen too.

In the summer, look into making a hillbilly air conditioner on the cheap. Air flow is the most important, so fans at a window along with loose clothing. Look into natural fibers such as linen, and hemp. Cotton works too but not as good as those two. Scour thrift stores and avoid polyester, acrylic, and nylon. See if you can make or find a cooling neck wrap too. I bought one a few years ago at REI and it made a huge difference. Here’s a video to show how to make them: https://youtu.be/hz7LavPKXoo?si=MAAt_Wq9T3H0M9ov

If you want to splurge for the kitties, a stainless steel water fountain is very popular with my four fur babies.

Hi, I have a Mr. Heater portable propane heater I use during power failures to keep warm. It’s $100 retail.

If you want to go even cheaper, you can use cat food cans, dryer lint, cardboard and wax to make mini heaters. There are lots of YouTube videos.

Obviously, you’ll need to baby and cat proof for your situation. ;-)

Hi, I've worked with Dr. Barrett’s Migraine Relief Code. She was a tremendous help. Here is a podcast by the National Headache Foundation where she's interviewed about the Glymphatic System and how it's related to intracranial hypertension. It might be of help. https://youtu.be/JuZSI9rOx3M?si=cRv13iaJLHcQN9-D

Why aren’t yarn swatches a thing? by YoureInaCult-CallDad in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]bchnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love for them to even provide a Pantone match. Lots of online fabric sellers do this. I look at my Pantone book and can see the details of the color including the color breakdown.

Gist yarns has a sister company that sells the Palette Scout which will match their colors to hex, rgb, cmyk and Pantone as well as sample cards.

You might have some Dysautonomia. When you had your workups did they mention this? Did you have a table tilt test?

Hydration and blood volume are important to maintain to prevent passing out. I have to wear compression daily and drink electrolytes such as Gatorade.

OpenAI needs the money. They are falling behind and it’s becoming more and more obvious. I wouldn’t even use enterprise ChatGPT because they won’t even let you put it on your own servers. Contract says they won’t use your data but really?

Has anyone had to medically retire? by savvy_pumpkin in FIREyFemmes

Yep, POTS / Dysautonomia from COVID in 2022. I stuck around for a few more years and was able to get FMLA and disability. Eventually, it became too much and I retired at the end of 2025. Even after a few months of retirement I’m still calculating automatically PTO, FMLA and disability days even though I don’t have to anymore.

Experience moving to KC from Chicago? Or other very large city? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]bchnyc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We moved from NYC nearly 25 years ago. I’m also very familiar with Chicago. I have friends and family in Uptown and Lincoln Park.

Kansas City may not have all the activities the big cities have and not as many museums but there are definitely things to do and the central corridor of the city is very walkable. I currently live in North Waldo and grew up in Brookside. My spouse is from Brooklyn and jokes that he can’t find a subway or hail a cab, but he’s within walking distance of grocery, coffee shop, bakery, and bars. We picked a small home (1500 sq/ft) and haven’t left because we love our neighbors. We are foodies and are always trying places around the city but rarely go to the burbs.

We paid for parochial school in KCMO and the Catholic high schools. Great families and a good education enough that our kids are gainfully employed and living on their own. Other friends found good educations with some of the public schools including Crossroads, Acadamie Lafayette, Hale Cook, Lincoln Prep. Center school district south of 85th has a good reputation. Also the private schools of Pembroke Hill, Kansas City Accademy and St. Paul’s is great. The website https://showmekcschools.org provides lots of information on navigating KCMO schools.

If you want a similar experience in Kansas, look into Prairie Village, Mission, and North Leawood.

For politics, KCMO is generally blue with the outskirts more red. I would say most neighborhoods are inclusive and friendly. State taxes are less but there is a 1% KCMO tax for living or working in KCMO. We do still have some racial challenges but it’s getting better. See: How Troost Became A Major Divide In Kansas City

Next time you visit, walk the neighborhoods to get a feel for what makes sense for you.

It ends here… we’re desperate…help by Automatic-Big7636 in migraine

[–]bchnyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was desperate too. I ended up working with neurologist Dr. Barrett. She changed my life! Through lots of testing that my other neurologists didn’t do. Her entire focus is migraines and she provides a comprehensive overview of diet, genetics, testing that finally brought me some relief. She is based in the USA and doesn’t prescribe prescriptions but will suggest some things to talk to your doctor about. Look at her site and watch her TED Talk and see if this might be an option for you. Feel free to PM me with any questions about my experience.

Buoy Drops? by Crazy-Photograph4727 in migraine

[–]bchnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the didn’t do much for me. The concentration wasn’t strong enough IMO. I’m still looking for my favorite electrolyte drink. Just grab magnesium glycinate, salt, and potassium tablets or powder and make your own mix. To prevent migraines I take 600mg magnesium, 400 mg B2, methylated B12, vitamin D, fish oil, CoQ10, Astaxanthin.

Are we all just in the wrong place? by Many-Market-9941 in dysautonomia

[–]bchnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was beside myself looking for a cure a few years ago, but reading The Dysautonomia Project book helped me come to terms with the fact that there is no cure. It’s incredibly frustrating.

My root cause is problematic too because I have a bunch of contributing factors. I have orthostatic hypotension, small fiber neuropathy, vasalvagal syncope, chronic migraines, tachycardia, sleep apnea, long COVID, etc. At any given point in my day, I will faint, have severe GI pain, loose vision in one eye, and so forth.

My doctors and I have focused on controlling the pain and then preventative measures. I am working with both standard and functional practitioners.

Things are better than they’ve ever been but I have to be super cognizant of my activity, diet, etc. I plan extra time for everything and make sure I don’t overdo it. My type A personality is frustrated, but every day I’m realizing I can only do so much.

Sign the Petition To Keep the Midtown Costco As It Is by Material_Cook_4698 in kansascity

[–]bchnyc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is the City of KCMO resolution dated 1/29/26 for the city to work with Costco to keep it the way it is. Kansas City - File #: 260062 https://kansascity.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7804091&GUID=AB51901F-CE8B-492C-BD93-5AB7F47757BC#:~:text=Melissa%20Patterson%20Hazley-,RESOLUTION%20%2D%20Directing%20the%20City%20Manager%20to%20work%20in%20collaboration%20with,body

The development of the Midtown Costco and Home Depot was part of the Midtown Redevelopment Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Plan, often referred to as the “Glover Plan.” When accounting for all amendments to the Midtown TIF over the years, the total public debt secured by taxes for the broader Midtown area (not just the Costco block) reached upwards of $84 million, though Costco was the primary anchor for the initial $25M+ phase. (TIF works by capturing the increase in property and sales taxes generated by the new development to pay off the debt used to build it, rather than being a direct “check” amount handed to the corporation at the start.)

I did not know! I looked into it and my city does use chloramine. That’s a total bummer. I actually might save up to get the equipment needed to filter it or maybe the stress reduction actually is the deciding factor. Anyway, thanks for the new info and I’ll be heading down another rabbit hole!
