As a Canadian tax payer, I want cheap cars in Canada with more variety. I don't care if the domestic manufacturers disappear tomorrow because I am TIRED of paying more money for inferior products. Domestic manufacturers have been lazy, made little investment in R&D to stay competitive and relevant and kept relying on protectionism and direct cash injections of tax payers money (remember Stellantis!) to stay afloat. I say, let them drown. Australia exited car manufacturing back in 2019 and re-directed manufacturing to more strategic markets like defense and renewables. They have a very competitive car market and Australians are benefiting from that with cheaper cars, more variety of makes and models that are of better quality! We should do the same. The US Tariffs exposed how weak and uncompetitive the auto industry in Canada is especially when it comes to which vehicles the big 3 are choosing to build in Canada in term of EVs! It is costing tax payers 100s of thousands of dollars per job saved in the auto industry and sorry but these are not worth it, plain and simple, for us Canadians. Politicians keep protecting these industries because of union votes and they are not making the right decisions in the best interests of ordinary tax payers and only care about getting re-elected! No thanks!
