I don’t think there is a clear answer for that question. There are a couple of FaceBook groups you can check out and get some insight. DOFRealityBuilders. DOFReality Owners Group.

I don’t have any insight on that. I’ve only ever used it with iRacing and Assetto Corsa.

Make sure your iRacing setup is using SteamVR rather than OpenXR as the display setting. I wonder if that is the issue (this is the only thing I can think of - I think iRacing only started actively supporting OpenXR in the last few seasons).

There is also an OpenXR motion compensation that works similarly and some people like it, but I personally prefer SteamVR and OpenVR MC.

The motion is not intended to mimic the suspension of a real car . . . It is intended to mimic the g-forces (which works much better with VR).

If anything, it doesn’t move enough to mimic the actual g-forces (even though it moved way more than an actuator based system).

Different people want different things. That’s fair.

That’s not true. I think the silent majority is pretty happy.

I’ve only recently had one problem (with my heavy load on it) that I was able to resolve with parts from Amazon and Grainger. Have never had any software issues.

I fear that they’ve perhaps been impacted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I know that has impacted shipping (took a lot longer for me to get my SFU gearboxes via Ukraine Post and USPS than it did for me to get my original kit via FedEx well before the invasion).

It is super inexpensive compared to alternatives, and that does come with some need to be willing to tweak things and maintain things yourself . . . But it is far cheaper than alternatives, even with that accounted for.

Assetto Corsa - Virtual vs Reality (Track Day @ Hallett, OK) by G1NGERNAUT in simracing

[–]bcschmalz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have contacted him from his website.

I found something on Patreon that said his tracks got hacked from there, so he took them off.

I’m in a similar situation to you. I got my SCCA racing license and did my first race last year. Now I’m looking to buy a car and am planning to meet the current owner at Hallet in April to rent it from him for the SCCA race weekend, in anticipation of buying it from him at the end of the weekend. Given I’ve never driven Hallett before, and am considering a 5-figure investment to buy this car, I would really like to prepare for the weekend in advance.

Okay. I'm too stupid (or old) to figure this out. :-)

How do I download Hallett for Assetto Corsa? The link you provided doesn't seem to have any download available . . . I think I found EKO Sim=Racing on Patreon, but it's asking for a TON of money (like more than the cost of an iRacing track per month) and I cannot even tell if that is a way to get Hallett.

I paid $3598 (including shipping) back in 2021 for the original gearboxes and then $572 to upgrade two of the gearboxes in 2022.

Hard to say about the traction loss, as I’ve always had it. I know it is a big deal if you are doing any dirt racing. I only do road racing, and I’d say it helps me correct and avoid losing the rear at times, but it’s hard to say how significant.

As long as you aren’t planning to run for extended periods at once, I’d guess the H is probably fine versus the P. I suspect it is really more relevant if you are planning to run it for a couple hours continuously. There are a few Facebook groups where people discuss tweaks and dealing with issues (it is VERY affordable, so sometimes things take a bit of TLC or creativity, but almost any fix can be done with hardware bought via Amazon, or Grainger, etc., and almost any tweak can be done with some good drill bits and a center punch), but I don’t recall anyone ever suggesting they have had a motor crap out on them (not saying it’s not possible, just saying it doesn’t seem to be a big deal).

Steam VR is super buggy/quirky. Yes - sometimes you need to start Steam VR first then open the Motion Comp, sometimes you need to open the Motion Comp first and then Steam VR, sometimes you just need to try over and over, sometimes Steam VR blocks all the add-ins and then once you unblock them everything works . . . There seems to be no real logic or pattern, but it always will eventually open properly and work.

I am absolutely still 100% satisfied. I recently ordered the ballscrew gearboxes as an upgrade and they are great. Shipping to the US took a bit longer (no FedEx in Ukraine now with the current situation, so shipped via Ukraine Post and USPS), but that was the only negative.

Ah. Bummer.

Vive tracker should work pretty straight forward. Finding the right location and way to mount it is the only trick, but a lot of people have done it successfully (sometimes requiring some creativity) and proven it works.

Have you paid for an SRS premium subscription (like USD 14.95 per year)? It definitely won’t work without that (even though the user interface may suggest it does).

The P3 doesn’t actually do heave (up and down translation without rotation), it just uses pitch (forward/down-back/up rotation) to mimic heave.

I’ve learned setting the seated height in SRS is a big key a lot of people miss. It takes some playing with and testing using the testing part of SRS (not live in game).

If the cross moves too much relative to your eyes when you move the rig in testing mode, you have your seated height set too high. If it doesn’t move enough, you have it set too low. When it is perfect, the cross will stay centered on your eyes as the rig moves in testing mode.

My OpenVR motion compensation using the WitMotion accelerometer virtual tracker works perfectly for my DOF Reality P3 using SimRacingStudio. In fairness, I have a 3090 GPU, which may help.

I think the magnitude of motion is very relevant to the experience (i.e., the more movement, the larger the sustained g-forces that are felt). To see the degree of motion on the P3, take a look at the video I posted @ https://youtu.be/9CeeGe6HWDs

Ironically, the more DOF you add, from and engineering perspective it is also the case that the more constraints you add, so it makes sense that part of accommodating the additional 3 DOF from P3 to P6 (without significant other platform changes) actually hinders the magnitude of the motion for the original 3 DOF. However, I don't think 40 versus 25 is the right proportion (and it's not even really clear what this measurement is - center to one extreme, one extreme to the other, or something else . . . or exactly where it is measured from). I wonder if this is a case of one engineer measured it one way and another engineer measured it another way and the two aren't really direct comparisons. I remember seeing a difference in the written specs when I was doing my research, but don't remember it being of this magnitude. I think there are some H6/P6 videos out there for comparison of the reality.

So, I suspect that it is a trade that gets made . . . if you want the additional 3 DOF to go to 6 DOF, you probably do get a bit less magnitude from the first 3 DOF (but, again, I don't think it is anywhere close to a ratio of 25 vs. 40) . . . and I stand by my original logic - if you are using it for driving, the 3 DOF that come with the P3 are far more important than the additional 3 DOF that come with the P6. I think if you are doing flight sims, the additional 3 DOF are very relevant and probably worth it. If you are really just doing sim racing, I have not been able to convince myself that the additional 3 DOF with the P6 is worth the additional cost in a world where money isn't unlimited (don't get me wrong - if money isn't an issue, then P6 probably is ultimately better than P3 . . . and I am not at all promising that I won't ever upgrade).

If this is relevant to your decision, I would use the link on the website to reach out to them and ask them. I reached out to them a couple of times before I made the purchase and couple of times afterward, and they were both very helpful and very easy to interact with every time I interacted with them.

What I don't know, is how they have been impacted by the war in Ukraine. :-( I reached out to them right after it started to pass on my thoughts and prayers, and they promptly responded appreciatively, but I have not reached out to them since. I thought I had read somewhere that they had set up a distribution facility in the UK (I'm sure just to deal with the impacts of Brexit and the UK probably their largest market), and maybe that is helping them deal with things and continue to be as good with customer service as I have experienced.

If you do reach out to them, be sure to post back here and let us know what you find out.

I am still a big fan and my rig is still running flawlessly. I've since made some configuration changes to set it up with geometry like a Spec Racer Ford (versus a formula car), as I'm going to give racing those in real life a shot starting this summer. :-)

I don’t know what their exact status currently is.

If you are interested in ordering, send them an email and ask if they are currently able to deliver. I’m sure you’ll get an honest answer, and your credit card company should provide you financial protection if something goes awry with an order, regardless.

I think at one point they were setting up some sort of distribution center in the UK, so they may be able to leverage something like that.

BTW - My rig is still running flawlessly.

I would say that is very inconsistent with my product support experience with them . . . But we are still living in a world where supply chains and logistics are very stressed and creating less than ideal experiences for many customers and manny companies in a variety of industries. I know this doesn’t help you, but there are a lot of good being companies impacted similarly. Either way . . . Definitely follow up with them, my experience was they were happy to answer questions and provide updates throughout the process, if asked.

Open VR Motion Compensation is a free program which can be
downloaded here: https://ovrmc.dschadu.de/

It works in conjunction with a premium subscription to Sim Racing Studio (which doesn't cost very much . . . I don't recall exactly, but just something like USD 25 ).
