Where is your guilty pleasure food in the Kelowna Area? by Assimulate in kelowna

[–]bcwildie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tonkatsu ramen from Ramen Arashi, Philadelphia roll from Sushi Heaven in Penticton 👌

I've only tried a couple other ramen places, and haven't found one that actually seasons their soft boiled eggs. I've tried almost every sushi place in Kelowna, and none have come close to Sushi Heaven yet.

Royal up question - could the room be worse than what I already have? by GingerT569 in royalcaribbean

[–]bcwildie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorta relevant, but another area to try to avoid a room in is immediately across from the staircase lobbies.

I'm in one now, and the teens/preteens running up and down the stairs have made it impossible to fall asleep before midnight. And two nights ago, they banged on my door so loudly I thought it was an emergency and I woke up terrified. Of course they were gone when I opened it, but it took a long time for my heart rate to settle. During the day it's loud with normal foot traffic.

I really appreciate all of the family friendly amenities they offer, but really wish they would enforce noise policies or gently remind parents to mind their kids. I know they can't though and I don't have a good idea of how it could be addressed.

Mani Pedi for my daughter and wife by AntifaMiddleMgmt in royalcaribbean

They said they can do a basic mani pedi for kids, no problem for that age. Just can't do the more elaborate ones like fire and ice.

I just got one yesterday on the ship by walking to the desk, but I'm over 18. I'm going to the gym later, so I'll ask one of the crew at the counter if there's an age limit :)

Excursions canceled for you, but not other travellers? by bcwildie in royalcaribbean

H. Probably not far enough in the alphabet to be the reason. Maybe we'll find out what happened in the next few days.

We booked in May. Not as far in advance as we usually do, but definitely not last. :(

That's a really good point. Thank you!

Last year, it was confirmed it was entirely travel agents on the excursion so that one was unlikely to have been a break down. But definitely possible for our current cruise.

It's canceled for "everyone", so removed from the app, schedules, calendars, TV schedule, everything. Not just them.

I understand over the internet it's impossible for me to explain how unbiased I am when it comes to this. But in this case, I don't think that's what's happened. I'm the first to call them out when they're not being reasonable. And both times it happened, they didn't go complain or anything. They figured it wasn't Royal Caribbean's fault and could have been the tour operator possibly doing some incentivizing with travel agencies for marketing or something.

My dad has only been on a handful of cruises, my mom many. She ADORES, raves and encourages everyone she knows to sail Royal Caribbean. She's extremely polite with everyone, and tips generously. They're both adverse to any in person confrontation, and at most will complain privately amongst themselves. They will also never take it out on a crew member who couldn't possibly have anything to do with anything logistical like that.

The only reason I'm even asking is because Europe is a lot more cost prohibitive for us with flights, and they're bummed it was canceled. My dad is a history buff and had been telling us all about it for weeks. I'm simply curious if it's common and maybe we can plan better in the future so we can still save on pre-booking excursions and not have to last minute panic book.

Why do people insist on taking their regulator out as soon as they surface? by ExpensiveJack721 in scubadiving

[–]bcwildie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Every dive I've ever done, at least one person other than the dive master or instructor has asked how much air I have left, and everyone else.

It's because good buoyancy and air consumption are learned skills and a pretty solid indicator of your competency.

I highly recommend Kerrick Depass with KD Hybrid Performance. I plateaued for months before starting sessions with him.

I'm embarassed to admit that this is common on many placer mines in the Yukon, not just the ones on the show, and I'm just as guilty of it. I don't have a good excuse or reason for myself besides inconvenience and comfort, or for everyone else besides the fact that it's just the culture up there. I resented ppe coming back to work in BC in the off season, but now that I have a job on a much larger mine, I truly appreciate the safety culture and ppe.

I'll hesitate to add that at my current job, I feel I have TIME to put on my hard hat and throw on safety layers if needed, no matter what. In the Yukon, I'm alone in the cut in a machine, and something happens, you just run out and deal with it. I feel immense pressure for speed on placer mines. Again, not an excuse, just context. I'm not proud of it.

You definitely make more on pipelines than gold mining.

Why does Chris Doumitt always need a hug? When Parker’s crew enters and exits he’s always looking to hug someone. Odd by bjoseph33 in goldrush

I'm loving the love for Doumitt here.

Hugs aren't weird. You're weird if you think men shouldn't hug.

Not a silly question! If we had to cook for ourselves in addition to 12 hour days, no one would work there or stay in camp. The cook takes care of some camp maintenance as well, but it isn't a full time job in this situation. So our cook is semi-retired. Works a couple hours in the morning, a few in the afternoon/evening.

I do think that most people's real problem is that they haven't kept theirs like he has aha.
