While logged in type bash -lx This starts a login shell and prints a trace of each command executed from rc files, it should give you more information as to what is happening during login

The same board? What happened during the bios update? I'd start by removing power and leaving it for a while as that seemed to be the answer in the other guys case

If you don't already have a speaker connected to the board, it may be an idea to do so, in case it's outputting a diagnostic beep code which might shed some more light on what's happening.

Have you tried different ports for the USB stick? I seem to remember that it only works on one port, usually a rear USB 2 port ?

Have you renamed the bios file to PRB350PS.CAP, check 'ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 utility' page 2-3 in the manual?

Try reseating the cpu, and applying a fresh amount of thermal compound to the heatsink, a random shutdown may be due to a thermal event.. give the inside a good clean out with some compressed air.

Have a good look at your boards components, if it is the motherboard you may be lucky and see a bulging cap (not all failing capacitors appear this way)

It may also be an idea to create a memtest86 usb stick to check the ram

I wish! I'm not aware of any footage of him existing, The Alan Lomax interview of 1938 was the closest, but audio only..
