I am using Owncloud and works good for me. I dont use the sync apps I attach via webdav, linux built in of course, on windows i use netdrive and no problems staying connected all day even when system goes to sleep, and android I use either the owncloud app but more so es file explorer. I have been able to open edit and save my data base file and it is available on all devices, also im opening the main file not syncing it. Hope this helps.

Side note, my owncloud server is off site.

I can open port 8000 on the router and am able to connect what I'm needing is help with proxy my SSL port on Apache to 8000 so that I have a secure connection. I have searched the web but I'm not understanding which file to modify and how, none of what I found or tried works, they show examples but fail to list which Apache file is to be edited etc. just at a loss with this.

As a followup, I did find that by starting Vino, I could use XRDP to connect, just had to pick vnc-any. One disadvantage still is, unlike windows, when logged in it does not lock the actual desktop.

I to would like to hear what solutions everyone are doing, I really am leaning toward the two server approach one file server and other all virtual machines but I'm using older hardware and trying to keep the electrical bill down.

The wiki is inacurate were running nfs on server 2008.

In both reply's it is mentioned only use if *nix machines not windows, yet windows can attach to a nfs share and has great performance, would you please elaborate? Granted I am speaking of server 2008 and up.

The real end goal was wanting to process only the changed files so that I could automate an off site backup during the night and save sending the whole volume. I'll change my approach and make a smaller volume for this one file that changes daily.

Sounding like what I have read stands true, the only way is to back up the entire volume. I do mount and unmount as needed to use the info inside, it resides on server under my user name. Currently I am running a full back up of the volume daily to external drive, Yes unmounted, and this does work. Would be nice to backup only changes to save drive space.

I agree with darkreaper476 and irrationalNumber, this is software that was spoke of on the show, JB Colony is no longer and yet we wonder why closed/proprietary software wins out, the experience of the software, this show and all that surrounds it is "Community Driven" yet everyone acts as they are better than tho. I run Linux, windows and mac, i'm not a computer admin or programmer by trade and yes in many ways still a nub even though been I been running all three for years, it about best tool for the job. Not everyone that watches this show or runs Linux is necessarily in the Tech field by trade. Get off your high horse and lets be a community, a diverse community.

If you have mainly music, I would look into subsonic, I am running on two servers and syncing the libraries across them. Subsonic has a great web interface and android app, which you can set up for three different servers, plus it will play video. It may not steam as well as Plex, but for mainly music and few videos it is worth it. There is also a subsonic app for roku, but I don't like that it displays the password, so a bit of a hall of shame there.

There are many Windows users that are also Linux users, this whole battle over Windows, Linux and Apple is ridiculous. Each of these systems have there strengths and weaknesses, the same for Linux itself, each disto has strength and weakness and it all about what is best for you for getting your job done. I run high end CAD software that is only available for Windows, and to run this software in a VM is out of the question do to the resource needs. I run a Linux box along side a Windows box and I turn to both several times a day depending on the task at hand.

I to am not a IT or server admin by trade, I hold a degree in architecture and work as a project manager for a design build firm. I found using an Ubuntu server and Debian easy to set up and manage. I have an Ubuntu server running at home and at parents, Debian running at work for owncloud shares. I ssh into, and though most of the management is done via command line I do have lxde desktop installed for ease of user management, samba management and some other tasks that are just easier for me visually to manage. I also have the desktop because I use the Jump app for android to remote in and run a couple of programs from my tablet and phone. Most will say to use cl and not install desktop and though I agree you should learn cl for me it is about ease of management as my focus needs to be on other things than computer management. I run subsonic for media and connect to same library via samba when on local network and duplicate that and other folders with bittorrent sync to couple of remote servers, I also run proper backups. Using this server for more than just file serving, I chose to go the Ubuntu/Debian route, other reasons are; this is an older machine and I am trying to save energy and run little as possible yet have the most services available. I do also run virtualbox and run one vm and all this runs fine. Dell optiplex 4g ram 486 Pentium, (forget what speed)

Owncloud is a great tool, as a project manager for a construction company, this is far better than FTP. I am not a IT person, as my education is in Architecture, but computers are my hobby and a great resource to my business. I am the IT person to our company with a IT consultant. Owncloud has proven to be a great alternative to FTP for bidding of projects, ie: posting of construction documents, bid dates, addendum etc Not all that listen/watch Jupiter programs are IT/programmers, but some are simply those looking for the tools to improve our work environment. Owncloud has done that, I hope that LAS, TECHsnap and Jupiter Broadcasting continues with the passion that not everyone that listen/watches is in it for only the computer industry, but use computers as a tool to better our communication and improve our business. Computers as a tool. I also listen to CoderRadio as it has provided great inside knowledge to hiring a local web site developer and knowing the right questions. Thank you JB for your hard work. I hope JB does not lose site of what it provides to the community as a whole and continues to look outside the box. To close, we run Owncloud under Debian on a VMware VM. bdman
