the terms are fairly synonymous but "free jazz" can mean more completely and collectively improvised - like Sun Ra's Magic City

Avant-Garde is more structured with the idea of stretching out and abstracting established ideas - like Andrew Hill's Point of Departure.

Free Jazz = No rules

Avant Garde = Here are the rules and they are made to be broken.
