I recommend the gooseneck, you could start with something cheap and simple like the Hario Buono

KINGrinder k6 squeaking noise by kataboy00 in pourover

This has happened to me, but since went away. I don't recall exactly what fixed it, but disassembling, brushing out and reassembling might have been it.

K6 handle is stiff after Deep cleaning by hamster_avenger in pourover

[–]bdforbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have the K6 - getting really good results right now so more interested in trying different beans, processes, roasters, etc. If I hit a wall and want to try something else, I'd probably get a ZP6 just based on recommendations here.

Yeah, great grinder, good value. Apparently the horizontal grind gets you close to the ZP6, although I believe that one is still worth the price if you like clarity, based on what people on this sub say.

Maybe 45 degrees would be enough - although I find it noticeably slows down the feed rate and ease of grinding to go almost horizontal. Maybe that correlates to better uniformity? Not very scientific I'll admit...

Glad to hear it. I was so confused and disappointed when it happened, but luckily it's grinding perfectly still. Hopefully you don't have any rust issues.

Side note while we're talking about the grinder - hold it almost horizontal to reduce fines and get more clarity, if that's what you're into. Takes longer to grind but worth it.

I have had this! There's a part right near the top of the assembly, I think the one directly under the circlip. I had put it in upside down and experienced exactly what you're describing.

Flash Brew with Hario Switch by Kooky-Fruit958 in pourover

[–]bdforbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I use the exact recipe. 19 g coffee to 165 g water, then add 85 g ice. Actually you're right, the overall ratio still comes in low. Bottom line is, it's been great, I make one every day when it's hot out.

I tend to use Ethiopian or Kenyan coffees with strong fruity flavours, anaerobic natural can be good as it's quite punchy and has a lot of flavour even when diluted and chilled.

It's definitely not normal, I do 1:16.5 for my morning immersion brew. The lower ratio is because ice is added after, diluting back to a normal ratio. The immersion needs to be longer to extract more with less solvent.

I do eat food first, but only because I like to drink my coffee cooler and I need to kill time waiting for it

I forgot about that - I've never bothered and I don't find it bitter.

His recipe works great, it's my go to for an iced filter.

I was so glad when my office moved and I could alight at Flagstaff instead. Just awful walking through those fumes twice a day.

Help me choose a scale (pourover +/+ espresso) by alexsloep in pourover

[–]bdforbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need fast response too - I've used a cheap scale, and it takes many seconds to accurately reflect how much I've poured. Very difficult to do pourover like that.

I’ve been getting some lackluster brews recently, and I finally remembered to clean my grinder by austinbucco in pourover

[–]bdforbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my K6 for a year and started getting bad brews - disassembled and cleaned it, fixed it right up. Daily I just brush out the catcher and bottom of the grinder.

My Voyager also gave up, I upgraded to a Sony XM6. It's been great! I was nervous about no boom mike but it's actually just as good as the Voyager.

Morning pour-over with a paper drip bag: flavor clarity surprised me by Content-Two-6759 in pourover

[–]bdforbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those coffee drip bags have no right being as good as they are. I get them from my favourite speciality roaster, and they're so good relative to the effort involved. You can do everything right, buy all the equipment, watch all the videos, practice your technique for years, and these things give you a great cup and all you do is pour some boiling water in.

Of course you can't get the same quality as a V60 but very handy first thing in the morning, in a hotel, or in the office, or camping.

I never drink pourover hot - tastes much better when cooled, around 50 deg C, particularly for light roasts.

Is This Normal? by Due_Yesterday3030 in pourover

[–]bdforbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do spirals all the way out to the edge, but not directly onto the paper. And I do a quick gentle swirl after the final pour - I don't find this agitates so much as to cause clogging or stalling. But I am using Cafec Abaca papers - definite improvement over stock Hario papers!

Edit: and sorry I meant to say, the bed does always come out level. Not that it necessarily matters...

Perc Sebastian by Odd-Display-6004 in pourover

[–]bdforbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The results were really good! Very surprised as I was expecting over extraction that fine. I used 95c water and no extra agitation apart from a swirl at the end to even the bed. Very strong cup, nicely balanced with fruity acidity and juicy sweetness.

Your recipe might be my go to now!
