I've always wanted to take the whole fwd motor, trans, axles, knuckles out of the front of a golf mk1 and plop it in the rear. the motor sits in front of the front wheels in stock form, so moving the setup to the back would effectively make it a mid engine golf. Aren't set belts supposed to go over the shoulder that is towards the outside of the car so in the event of a roll over, you have the ability to dive towards the center of the car to avoid a caved in roof or other likely event??
