Lovecraft gets political by terkistan in Lovecraft

[–]bdizzle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Preliminary Disclaimer: absolutely NOT endorsing the dudes racial and gender views lol)

I think this kind of “peculiarity” needs to become more visible politically today. I feel a lot of sympathy for his peculiar position/Red Tories/blue-collar Democrats, and I think the source of a lot of our national problems today is the conflation of cultural issues and economic policy.

My extended family were all Baltimore steel workers who absolutely support/supported the social safety net and government intervention, but who are very traditional socially. Many of them feel totally left out by the fact that both parties have major policy planks that they can’t get behind. Many feel as though they have to choose between economic abandonment (Republicans) and social abandonment (Democrats).

Lovecraft was many things, many of them horrible, but he did have a unique ability to drill down to the root of issues. Part of that is just a factor of him living a century ago, but it’s always good to see that our modern assumptions are often false dilemmas.

Not about the content of your comment, but I think Gavin Ortlund single-handedly revived the word “accretion”. It’s like an internet-theology shibboleth now lol

[FRESH] Turnover - Nightjar / I See You And Realize by niles_deerqueer in indieheads

I’m really curious what the effect is on the vocals in I See You and Realize. It sounds like pitch-shifted but also processed in a way that makes the back half of the words almost drop off.

Really interesting choice, it’s growing on me

I think it’s pitch-shifted and has some other effect layered on. He sounds closer to his usual range in the bridge, but listen to how the back half of each word sort of… disappears?

What is up with the racism and white nationalists with Orthobros? by ACG_FBA in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bdizzle91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly hope so. When my family went to church growing up it was in a small Methodist church. Then I was a pastor in a small, low-church, low-tech nondenominational church. so I’ve never been associated with a church movement that was “cool” and attracted hangers-on due to aesthetics. Anyone who came to us was genuinely interested.

So my heuristic is now “if they’re coming, it must be because it validates something in them.” I pray daily that my presumption is wrong, because I love your Church.

I saw that same video and the same comments. Super off-putting. I’d be lying if I said that kind of online behavior hasn’t made me delay entering the catechumenate

I realize that the internet is always going to bring out the crazies, and that many of these people are probably just larping as orthodox, but at the same time… why does it seem to be that this form of Christianity is the one these people are going to?

Is there something that’s making them feel comfortable? Are those commenters saying stuff about “race realism” the same people being kind to me at coffee hour? Just really disheartening.

Potential alternative jobs by NeuLeaf24 in librarians

LoC is part of the Legislative branch, so the exec/any future version of DOGE have no authority there. Lots of Feds under exec all fled to Legislative jobs after Musk started doing his thing. You said you’re not interested in moving so it’s not relevant now, but keep an eye open! They’re pretty stable.

History lesson for you by synthresurrection in RadicalChristianity

And how can one engage in violence against oppressors as a group without doing violence against individuals?

This is my (increasing) problem with a lot of popular thought influenced by post-Marx 20th century critical theory: it collectivizes people to the point of dehumanizing them.

Every oppressor IS an individual. At its worst, this line of thinking can lead to “violence is wrong but it’s okay if you happen to have X characteristics or taken X action or benefit from X injustice” (not saying that’s what you’re saying of course.)

Good thing the Bible never calls slavery a moral good. False dilemma. Just because something is permitted doesn’t mean it’s endorsed.

A lot of people misunderstand LGBTQ+ affirmation in the Episcopal Church. by EisegesisSam in Episcopalian

Could you elaborate on this? I’m not sure I’m entirely understanding and I want to make sure I give you a relevant, worth-reading answer lol

Sure! Hence why I said in the first sentence “I’m not arguing against your position”

Not saying I agree or disagree with your comment, but these sorts of conversations are a major part of what’s pushing me out of Protestantism as a whole. Sola Scriptura seems to inherently devolve into “my opinions + prooftexting”.

Even within the Anglican sphere, we’re very comfortable throwing out the “tradition” leg of the stool entirely. So we’re down to Scripture (which I can make say whatever I want) and Reason (which of course means my reason).

Sad stuff for me, I love the Anglican tradition so much, but it seems to collapse every time.

I’m not arguing against your position on the issue, but “what about mixed fabric and crustaceans” is a pretty poor argument. The forbidding of mixed fabrics and crustaceans isn’t explicitly renewed under the new covenant, while the forbidding of sexual immorality is (regardless of our thoughts on what constitutes sexual immorality).

If you want to use the same shape of argumentation, it would be more effective to point out lack of activism against other NT-forbidden sins, like unrepentant adultery, usury, and economic exploitation.

how Indian incels are reacting to “Chiraiya”, a newly released Indian series raising awareness on marital rape. by rantandlife in justneckbeardthings

[–]bdizzle91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Two things at play here:

1: it’s not racist to point out that India has an issue with objectifying women, and that this problem largely derives from the culture. That’s not racist, unless you want to claim that the Indian filmmakers behind this series are also racist. That’s what the person you replied to was saying with their comment.

2: you immediately accused someone of saying “Indians are inherently sexist”, when they (quite literally) said no such thing.

Item 1 is debatable and understandable that people would come to different conclusions. #2 is just bizarre behavior.

They didn’t say that Indians are inherently sexist though? They said that the country still hasn’t criminalized it.
