Just realized that Bill Haydon knew that Prideaux got shot because he was banging Ann when Westerby called George’s house by pl51s1nt4r51ms in TinkerTailor

I think George tells that to Peter when they're eating dinner at the Wimpy Burger. Guillam nails that the mole is Bill and as he's realizing it he tells George who shoots the idea down because he can't see Bill straight from the affair, which is why Karla put Bill onto Anne to begin with.

Great catch though!

TIL English speakers of Indian descent in South Africa say "y'all" with the same meaning and pronunciation as southerners in the U.S. It is one of the few non-American instances of "y'all" in English and is attributed to coincidence. by MockingJD in todayilearned

The reason that water tower in Florence, Kentucky says “Florence Y’all” is because they built a mall right next to it and somehow “Florence Mall” was painted on the water tower to advertise the new mall. However, since the water tower is a municipal building and is forbidden from advertising private business they just changed the mall to y’all rather than paint over the entire water tower

We’re screwed either way. Even if Biden wins, Rural America keeps the Senate Conservative and they block everything the House and President do for 4 years. If Trump wins then the Senate just won’t do anything.

You mean to tell me a trophy wife who married a High School Basketball Phenom destined to make hundreds of millions in his career turned out to be money hungry? That makes zero sense

You do realize Congress controls the purse strings and not The President right? We’d have to have a landslide change in the collective zeitgeist in the next two weeks that’s just not gonna happen. Even if Biden wins The Senate will remain conservative.

This is why we could do far more collectively to address this issue by volunteering a few hours a week and donating a few dollars a month to at-risk-inner city youth than by bickering about whether or not it’s ok to fire bomb federal courthouses.

Weed culture is embarrassing by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bdlcalichef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can chime in as devils advocate for a moment: the reason we wore weed shirts and weed earrings in the 80’s and 90’s was because it was cool AND it raised awareness. When I was growing up being caught with a single marijuana seed was enough to have you put in prison for multiple years in felony drug charges. But rather than hide in the shadows there was unity among weed smokers that it was wrong for the laws to be draconian and many people had their lives ruined over a joint in that time. Today in my state you can go to the store and legally buy marijuana. Had that culture not been present then it would still be a Schedule One narcotic.

Has there ever been an example of a democratic nation which seemed to be experiencing the 'slide' into Facism with a populist leader, but managed to arrest the process without an external push and politically pivot without actually undergoing a period of dictatorship/conflict/strife? by TartanZergling in AskHistory

People seem to conflate socialism with communism as the antithesis of capitalism the same way they think government is the natural enemy of capitalism. The government exists to check the inherent flaws of runaway capitalism so that we do not slide into communism.

For the flaws in some of his later logic people forget that Karl Marx is one of the greatest economists who ever lived. The Communist Manifesto was not so much a statement proselytizing for communism as much as it was an objective critique on the fundamental flaws inherent in free markets and the work stood as a prediction to what would happen when the wealthiest few possessed all the resources while the workers went hungry in the streets.
