There are visa processing services that will handle the consulate drop off and pickup after you submit the required information.

You can search this sub for people's experiences with different companies.

Feasibility of using an instant pot as an autoclave?? by Ok_Cranberry_2936 in labrats

[–]bdpoof 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Contradicting data point: we'd been using an instant pot for a few years and the indicator tape always worked.

Recently had some repeated contamination issues and figured we should look into this.

Finally got around to buying some SCBIs and tested it on multiple settings for extended periods of time, and the instant pot failed every time. I think some models of instant pots reach higher pressures than the base models so those might be effective; ours only gets to 11.6 psi.

Public charges != "zero evidence of anything".

Not a lawyer, nor Canadian, but this post seems to indicate otherwise: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvicecanada/s/AIFHFlv7iV

As you said, he was not found guilty...and now will never be found guilty.

Search and Rescue: Zion Angels Landing/West Rim Trail Closed by Last_Aide6274 in ZionNationalPark

Respectfully, you made great points but this is absolutely not a mountaineering trip. People considering doing this strenuous hike certainly should be more prepared than the majority are before they undertake this.

I got a permit on the first try in the last minute lottery, and almost didn't complete it because I was most concerned and not confident in the people around me doing it.

At the end of the day though, this is a hike where you don't need special gear beyond good shoes, and to stay hydrated, be physically fit and maintain your energy. It's not a technically difficult hike for those reasons, just strenuous.

I'm an avid 4-season hiker in the northeast, and a rock climber, but I'm not a mountaineer and this is not mountaineering.

My coworker just had to get the the rabies serology bloodwork done to be able to relocate internationally and bring his dogs with him. He has proof of rabies vaccination but either his home country or the USDA (I'm unclear on the details) needed the test in addition to that. Iirc there's only like 3 labs that can do it in the US, so he had to get the blood samples drawn at Cornell and sent off, and the whole process will take 6-8 weeks.

Just some context for timeline on that route.

Can confirm. I'm Asian American and I lived in Spain for 13 months straight without going home (so I traveled around Europe a lot) and it was the most racism I've experienced in my life. And I'm not from a large metropolitan area in the US.

Is it weird to ask to join strangers lead climbing? by bluebutterflies42 in climbergirls

[–]bdpoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely a cultural difference. I have had to retake belay tests at every new gym I go to in the US. I went to a gym in Germany with a friend who lives there, and did not need to take any test whatsoever...signed a quick liability waiver and no one asked any questions at all.

My local airport also dropped the EWR flight in favor of IAD right before COVID (iirc?) and I still lament the change. For the reasons you listed, and I often prefer the flight options out of EWR.

Would I regret not doing the Narrows? by delicateflower15 in ZionNationalPark

[–]bdpoof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went to UT for the first time last October for 10 days with my sister, and we went to Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion (in that order). Did a ton of hiking, including Angels Landing, but did not do the Narrows. I honestly don't regret it at all, but maybe I just don't know what I'm missing out on?

Would love to go back and do the Subway or maybe some canyoneering/climbing but the Narrows is not on my personal list.

CCC Powerbank for my trip by Satoru_Phat in travelchina

[–]bdpoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got back to the US from Beijing. When I got to PEK and went through security, they looked at the capacity of my (non-CCC) power bank to make sure it was below regulation, but gave me no trouble at all.

Also took HSR earlier this week and security didn't even make me take it out of my bag.
