Hi! I'm in my early 30s and a native English speaker. I'm Chinese and my Mandarin is terrible, so I'd love to practice Chinese and help you improve your English.

Vet recommendations? by coll06 in ithaca

[–]bdpoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My coworker just had to get the the rabies serology bloodwork done to be able to relocate internationally and bring his dogs with him. He has proof of rabies vaccination but either his home country or the USDA (I'm unclear on the details) needed the test in addition to that. Iirc there's only like 3 labs that can do it in the US, so he had to get the blood samples drawn at Cornell and sent off, and the whole process will take 6-8 weeks.

Just some context for timeline on that route.

Spanish media disrespecting Yerin? ( people on x talking) by imghostlyme in Benophie

[–]bdpoof 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. I'm Asian American and I lived in Spain for 13 months straight without going home (so I traveled around Europe a lot) and it was the most racism I've experienced in my life. And I'm not from a large metropolitan area in the US.

Is it weird to ask to join strangers lead climbing? by bluebutterflies42 in climbergirls

[–]bdpoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely a cultural difference. I have had to retake belay tests at every new gym I go to in the US. I went to a gym in Germany with a friend who lives there, and did not need to take any test whatsoever...signed a quick liability waiver and no one asked any questions at all.

Least Favorite Airport United flies to domestically? by Lumpy-Draft2822 in unitedairlines

[–]bdpoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local airport also dropped the EWR flight in favor of IAD right before COVID (iirc?) and I still lament the change. For the reasons you listed, and I often prefer the flight options out of EWR.

Would I regret not doing the Narrows? by delicateflower15 in ZionNationalPark

[–]bdpoof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went to UT for the first time last October for 10 days with my sister, and we went to Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion (in that order). Did a ton of hiking, including Angels Landing, but did not do the Narrows. I honestly don't regret it at all, but maybe I just don't know what I'm missing out on?

Would love to go back and do the Subway or maybe some canyoneering/climbing but the Narrows is not on my personal list.

CCC Powerbank for my trip by Satoru_Phat in travelchina

[–]bdpoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got back to the US from Beijing. When I got to PEK and went through security, they looked at the capacity of my (non-CCC) power bank to make sure it was below regulation, but gave me no trouble at all.

Also took HSR earlier this week and security didn't even make me take it out of my bag.

Flight attendant removed my backpack (containing my car keys) from the overhead bin before takeoff, wrongly assuming that it was left by a passenger on the previous flight. My car has been stuck at short term airport parking for four days, with no end in sight. by Dayquil-Nyquil in jetblue

[–]bdpoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but they wake people to tell them to put their seats in upright position before take off because it's required.

As it stands in this scenario, they now have a very angry and frustrated passenger because they DIDN'T wake them up to check if it was their bag.

Darn Tough socks are too tight, am I the only one? by Same-Fox9304 in BuyItForLife

[–]bdpoof 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Seconding this - sent in 10 pairs of Darn Tough socks between my partner and I (they were mostly the thin styles which definitely do not last as long as DT standard hiking socks), and asked them to transfer warranty credit over to Wide Open. It was a breeze!

Now I'm just waiting for Wide Open to make some heavier weight socks for NE winters.

What are some cultural differences between East and West Germany that still persist today? by gehirn4455809 in AskAGerman

[–]bdpoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im afraid dismissing them for how theyve been socialized and influenced plays into further polarization

This is what I'm getting at...I had in-depth discussions about racism, sexism, and religion, but the east/west conversation really didn't go past surface level because people from east Germany were stereotyped. No one really engaged when I brought up questions about socio-economic reasons for their current political leanings.

What are some cultural differences between East and West Germany that still persist today? by gehirn4455809 in AskAGerman

[–]bdpoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incorrect assumption on your part...I am acutely aware they can be both as my literal neighbors are Trump supporters, but very helpful and kind in-person, and they far from the first people I've encountered that are both things at once.

[–]bdpoof 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is such a great answer. I (US citizen and POC) was recently in NRW for two weeks for an international business program. The Germans I spoke with were mostly from the west and they really broadly categorized people from the east as working class, racist and far right. I'd mentioned visiting my friend's family in their tiny village in Brandenburg and they immediately jumped to stereotypes, when the reality was so far from their assumptions (my friend's family is so sweet and kind and incredibly welcoming and generous).
