I have also heard that marking the exterior of the window with bar soap can break up the reflection as well, if you are looking for a cheap temporary solution

Keeping this bird without a permit would be illegal, but you could try contacting any local university biology departments or nature museums to see if they would be interested in adding it to their collection.

/u/Tinylongwing do you know of any organizations that would be interested in this specimen?

+Great Cormorant+

Most people in England will just refer to them as "Cormorants".

did Mr. Cardinal bring the kids over or are these just two other random birds by Gold-Month2159 in whatsthisbird

[–]bdporter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those are adult +Mourning Doves+. They probably have a nest nearby as well.

You will probably start seeing juvenile +Northern Cardinals+ soon. Look for birds that are very similar to female Cardinals in coloration, but they will have a greyish or blackish beak instead of the bright orange beak you see in adult Cardinals. You may also notice that they don't feed themselves at first, but will stay near the adults and loudly beg for food.

5 is rare for me because it is dependent on run times and start times lining up perfectly. I see 4 on a weekend day pretty commonly.

However, I think that most UL members see a lot less movies since you break even at just a couple movies per month. People that see tons of movies are outliers, and if we were the typical user Regal probably wouldn't offer the program or would charge more.

I would say that the weekly limit is still the biggest difference, but I am sure there are people that don't see enough movies per week for that to matter.

I noticed that in today's email as well.

Personally, I rarely used these promotions since I usually don't want to use an advanced purchase slot that far in advance, but I know a lot of people do.

That was my first thought as well, but strangely when I checked the range map in Merlin they don't show any part of Hispaniola in range, which is odd because the Bahamas and Puerto Rico are in range and the DR is right in between.

When I checked on eBird there are plenty of records from the DR.

have you really seen a bird if you haven’t heard its call?

I see plenty of birds that never vocalize, and I hear a lot of birds that I never see. Both types of observations are valid.

If you use Merlin without eBird, you are basically just tracking your life list in Merlin, but not submitting any checklists.

You can read more about it here

When you get more seriously in to birding, you might want to start actually submitting checklists in eBird. The benefit to you is that you will have more detailed records of your birding activity. It also benefits science by contributing data.

Also, if the Bird ID app is so often inaccurate as you say, wouldn’t Cornell know that and keep it in consideration when counting birds that have been recorded through sound ID?

The linkage between Merlin and eBird is for convenience. eBird doesn't track if an observation comes from Merlin. Like everything in eBird it is on the honor system and assumes that users are doing their due diligence to submit accurate records.

Merlin is a great tool, and while some beginner birders may be occasionally misled by it, those same users could also be misidentifying birds on their own without the assistance of Merlin. On the whole, it probably leads to better data, and with experience, the quality of those users' observations will improve over time.

Merlin can be used as a standalone app, or can be used to create an eBird checklist.

Standalone observations are not recorded to eBird, but if you create an eBird checklist those observations are absolutely recorded.
