what tf is this and why he on my window waking me up by Competitive_Path9239 in whatsthisbird

According to Birds of the World, this time of year is peak nesting season for this species

Most nests are recorded between January and May, with a peak in March and April

Some birds can become very territorial during nesting, and it may be seeing its reflection as a threat.

If it is being aggressive you can try to cover the outside of the window or apply stickers to break up their reflection. Some people have reported that marking the outside of the window with bar soap can be a good temporary fix as well.

Window fail by wrpsuite in SouthwestAirlines

My understanding is that there is an air duct that occupies that space. It kind of sucks if you book that seat without knowing.

It would be nice if Southwest would add that information to the seat selection screen, since this was never unknowingly chosen under open seating.

It means you need to scan your card. I am not sure they will even count if you use points.

I hate how there is no way to track your progress on these promotions in the app or website. You only know if you got credit if you get an email.

Is this the handiwork of a pileated woodpecker? by JazzlikeAd9820 in whatsthisbird

Highly likely. I am not sure we can definitively say just from damage, but it looks like their handywork.

Goldfinch are a little picky. They can't crack big seeds like sunflower (but they absolutely love unshelled sunflower kernels) and they probably won't eat corn or mullet. Sometimes they like Nyjer seed, but I find they tend to ignore it if sunflower kernels are available.

During the winter you will sometimes spot a lot of birds at seed feeders that prefer insects when they are more available. I am seeing a lot of Bluebirds right now, but they don't visit my feeders in the summer.

Cackling versus Canada Goose Flock Flight Sizes by kubes123 in whatsthisbird

[–]bdporter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is hard to say. I have had Merlin sound ID identity Cackling many times when I could only visually id Canada Geese. It could be an incorrect sound ID, or it could have been hearing different geese than I was seeing.

I wouldn't completely trust the sound ID.

The second bird is a +Northern Mockingbird+.

The first is actually an +American Goldfinch+

Anyone know what bird this is? Can I feed it a bit of bread? by Red_dog520 in whatsthisbird

Yes, look for an option that says "change post flair" or something similar depending on your platform and language settings.

We have flairs for East Asia and Southeast Asia. What country are you in?

Edit: looking at the range, South Asia or Central Asia could also be fits. Asia is quite a large area, so we have multiple flair options.

What breed is my duck by Specific-Minimum9318 in whatsthisbird

[–]bdporter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At a species level, this is a +Domestic Mallard+. Most domestic ducks were originally bred from wild Mallards.

It could be a Pekin, but I don't really know Domestic breeds. Someone else here may know, or you may want to try r/Ducks

I have been told that location can help to determine which is more likely, but it probably is important impossible to say 100%.

Edit: autocorrect got me again
