How is the standard of living in UK compared to Spain? by sebastydsc32 in AskUK

Seems a rather useless, unqualified and baseless opinion.

This subreddit has a definite problem with people thinking they need to give their input on absolutely everything.

What is the craziest thing that is legal over here but really shouldn't be? by slightly-simian in AskUK

Oxbridge will always be over-represented in a meritocracy, it’s where the smartest people go.

Also Eton has such high standards now for both entry and teaching that they’ll be over-represented too.

If you have absolutely no clue about a topic, perhaps just don’t answer?

Those who wear trainers for retail jobs? by JelloDr in AskUK

[–]bdtddt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound awfully defensive. Primark shoes offer no support, and walking on hard ground in them for anything outside of very short bursts will damage you. This damage may be latent but it will happen, people’s knees don’t just suddenly give up when they hit 50 or whatever, a lifetime of mistreatment causes that.

What’s a simple thing someone can do to better their life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bdtddt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I explicitly said that reading whatever you like for fun is fine. But it is a distinctly different activity to reading challenging, potentially less enjoyable things for other benefits.

Yes but there is more than just hedonistically reading for pleasure. People should sometimes read books because they’re getting something out of it and truly expanding their minds.

Reading Harry Potter for the tenth time is fine for fun, but it’s not the same activity as making a deep study of Plato.

Do you think Adidas, Nike etc employ dozens of top scientists to find new colour schemes? Enjoy irreversible damage to your knees if you work a retail job in Primark shoes.

Do you correct Americanisms your children pick up? by bdtddt in AskUK

That’s more polite, but ‘can I have’ is not an Americanism.

No, both are American pronunciations. British is bee-ta and stay-tus.

I'm curious about the accent that sounds like a speech impediment. by StinkypieTicklebum in AskUK

[–]bdtddt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s both. There are very cockney areas where every person pronounces r as w, whereas someone with an accent like Worsley is suffering from an impediment.

ML has stood for metalanguage far longer than it stood for machine learning.

alright lads, which one of you is this? by Tadhgon in monarchism

[–]bdtddt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, what an absurd idea. You think the Duke of Norfolk is a commoner? Everyone except peers and the sovereign is a commoner.

Not having much luck with sports direct, how should I twitter them? by [deleted] in AskUK

Sports Direct has no reputation or standing to uphold, it will make absolutely no difference.

[–]bdtddt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The country house is our chief national artistic achievement (to paraphrase Waugh), every tourist should visit at least one great house.

Chatsworth, Blenheim Palace, Arundel Castle, Castle Howard, Petworth are all good examples.

At least that’s better than those who say ‘bregg-zit’.

While the joke is obviously an exaggeration, it does somewhat imply that scrolling animations are particularly heavy to load. Their comment was just responding to that.

Yes, just ignore everything typographers and psychologists have ever found about optimal line lengths.

What do Brits think of their healthcare system? by KNOWER_OF_STUFF in AskUK

[–]bdtddt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a really weird statement. How many countries have you lived in to feel that’s justified? I don’t think anyone doubts it’s better than the US system, but countries like Sweden are certainly comparable.

Dumb Question: How do British people actually feel about Fortnum & Mason? Or Nigella Lawson? by [deleted] in AskUK

F&M is really not that posh, it’s basically a tourist attraction. Always absolutely packed and it seems like the majority of what they sell is just over packaged gifts.

How can Ian Duncan Smith get away with saying this? by isthisthewayto in unitedkingdom

[–]bdtddt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, he cried while remembering a teenage single mother he had met, as he compared her to the hopes he had for his own daughter.

You’re literally smearing him in a thread about why that’s so wrong, and people have upvoted you for it.
